SOUTH PORTSMOUTH —
Wanda Lee Howell Howland, 82, of South Portsmouth, went home to be with her heavenly father at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at her residence, with her loving family by her side.
She was born May 5, 1931, in South Shore, a daughter of the late Lester Howell and Odessa Dunaway Howell.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Burnice, Lloyd, Kenneth, Paul and Don Wendell Howell; and sisters Wilda Carter, Rosemary Carter and Sharon Bryant.
Wanda was an employee of Williams Shoe Factory for 20 years. She was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge in South Shore and a member of First Christian Church in South Shore. She loved Kentucky basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball and she was her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s biggest cheerleader. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and her family. She was known as “Granny” to most everyone who knew her. The most comforting moments she experienced during her battle with Alzheimer’s were listening to her dear husband playing the guitar and singing to her. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Herbert Howland. She also leaves behind a daughter, Deanna, and her husband, Stephen Dowdy Sr. of South Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Stephanie Dowdy Fritz of Raceland; a grandson, Stephen Dowdy Jr. of South Shore; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Fritz, Chase Fritz, Tate Dowdy and Emma Kate Dowdy; and a brother, Lester Howell Jr. of South Shore.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore by Bill Hayden and Brett Unger. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
