J. Bryan ‘J.B.’ Roberts - 1925-2009
Bryan Roberts, 83, of Ashland, husband of Jo Ann Roberts, died Friday evening, June 5, 2009, at Kings Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness. J.B. was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Elkhorn, a son of the late John and Cora Elswick Roberts. He was a retired agent with American General Life and Casualty Insurance Company and a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and an usher for many years.
Surviving in addition to his wife, include two brothers, Harry Gene Roberts and wife Betty June of Baton Rouge, La., Franklin Roberts and wife Virginia of Glencoe, Mo.; three sisters, Jackie Tucker of Georgetown, Ohio, Shirley and husband Leonard Sloas of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, and Nell Ruth Crooks of Ashland; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Herma Lee and Bill Skeens of Barboursville, W.Va., brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Madge Walters of Hamilton, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Kedrick Roberts and John Roberts Jr.; and two sisters, Vi Williams and Marie Meade.
Being a part of the ‘Greatest Generation,’ Bryan served in the U.S. Army Glider Infantry during World War II in Europe as an MP. Although he was small in stature, his heart was as big as Texas. He will be sorely missed by his family, neighbors and church friends.
Funeral services will be at Noon, Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Rose Hill Baptist Church by Bro. Ron Mays and Bro. Charles Stewart. Burial will be in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rose Hill Christian School or to Gideons International.

William Rhoderick Hayes - 1921-2009
William Rhoderick Hayes, 87, of Ashland died Friday at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Charley, the son of the late Matt and Lydia Pack Hayes. He was a retired operator for Ashland Oil, #2 Refinery, and was a member a the Poage Masonic Lodge 325 F&AM; and the Northeast Fish and Game Club. He was an Air Corp Staff Sgt. in World War II where he served as a radio operator and gunman on B-17 bombers and was awarded the bronze star. He was a member of the Grandview Church of God.
He also was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Jean Kissinger Hayes in 1994; one sister, Ivory Hayes Bradley; and two brothers, Matt D. Hayes and Irvin Hayes.
Survivors include one daughter, Rose Mary Hayes of Russell; two sons, William A. Hayes of Middlesboro and Gordon S. Hayes of Ashland; four grandchildren, Daniel L. Hayes, Tanya Marie Hayes, Heather Nicole Hayes and Jennifer Ann Hayes; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Rayann Hayes and Zoey Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Goins officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by the Kenova American Legion 93.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Linzy Everett Stone - 1933-2009
Linzy Everett Stone, age 75, of Olive Hill passed away, Friday afternoon, June 5, 2009, in the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. He was born Nov. 20, 1933, in Elliott County, a son of the late Emory and Myrtle Blankenbeckler Stone. He was a sawmill owner and operator for 40 years. He was of the Baptist faith and attended the Upper Tygart Freewill Baptist Church.
He also was preceded in death by two brothers; Lowell Stone and George Stone; and two sisters; Bertha Skaggs and Zelma Stone.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sally Webb Stone; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Jeanette Stone and Brent and Sandy Stone, all of Olive Hill; four grandchildren, Kyle, Allie, Chris and Mark all of Olive Hill; five sisters and brothers-in-law; Opal Skaggs of Olive Hill, Faye and Kenneth Brown of Old Town, Madge Lewis, Gretta and Jack Flannery and Vesta and J.R. Flannery, all of Elliott County; and a host of family and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brothers Hobert Dean, Eugene Rayburn and Charlie Riggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Webb Cemetery on Smith Run in Olive Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until the service hour on Monday at the funeral home.
Kevin Flannery, Randy Flannery, Tim Flannery, Billy Adkins, Brandon Adkins and Vernon Cox will serve as pallbearers.

Eddie Wayne Wilburn - 1971-2009
Eddie Wayne Wilburn, age 37, of Cleveland, formerly of Greenup County, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009. He was born Nov. 8, 1971, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Albert and Hester Riffe Wilburn. He was a factory worker and was employed by Cleveland Black Oxide.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Bauer Wilburn; five brothers; Albert (Becky) Wilburn Jr. of Vanceburg, Russell Dean Wilburn of Cleveland, Silas Eugene Wilburn of Vanceburg, Jesse (Evie “Sissy”) Wilburn of South Shore and Chester Wilburn of Cleveland; five sisters; Maudie (Lloyd) McFarland of Ironton, Virginia (Raymond) Wilburn of South Shore, Eulane (John) Barker of Greenup County, Ninamae Linginfilter of Cleveland and Deanna (Larry) Palmer of Lorain, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Titus Wilburn.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 8, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, with minister Larry Barrell officiating. Burial will follow at the Albert Wilburn Family Cemetery in Greenup County.

Bonnie Fannin, age 73, widow of Bill Roger Fannin, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009. She was born June 23, 1935, at Wrigley, the daughter of the late Lonnie and Hannah Kidd Smith.
She is survived by one son and two daughters; Danny Ray and Kathy Fannin of West Liberty, Sherry and Bill Farley of Grayson and Tonya and Nick Elam of Morehead; five grandchildren; Michael and Amy Keeton, Shelley Fannin, Hannah and Ken Fletcher, Matt Farley and Loni Elam; a brother and sister-in-law, Emory and Lois Smith; a sister, Betty Black; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Elliott County Memorial Gardens in Sandy Hook.
