William D. “Bill” Gauze - 1929-2008
William D. “Bill” Gauze, 79, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.
He was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Ashland, Ky., the son of the late James Andrew and Mary Florence Burke Gauze. He was retired from Armco Steel as an inspection foreman, a member of Ashland Baptist Church and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis J. Moore Gauze; a daughter, Rhonda Deskins; a grandson, Kerm Nethercutt Jr.; great-grandchildren Blake Nethercutt and Jaylynn Faith Gauze; a son-in-law, Kermit Nethercutt Sr.; a brother, Joe Gauze; and a sister, Francis McWhorter.
Survivors include three daughters, Debra (Ronnie) Abrams, Phyllis (Greg) Woods and Sandra Nethercutt and her friend, Danny Hutchinson, all of Ashland; four sons, Cecil (Nancy) Gauze, James (Debbie) Gauze and Phillip (Cindy) Gauze, all of Ashland, and William (Cela) Gauze of Barboursville, W.Va.; a sister, Gladys Clark of Ashland; a brother, Harold Gauze of Ashland; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Bill Vallance and the Rev. Chris Hammond. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Military graveside services will be by Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Chester Ray Stevens - 1920-2008
Chester Ray Stevens, 88, of State Route 97, Bellville, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at his home following a long illness.
He was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Boyd County, Ky., to Meredith B. and Ollie (Barker) Stevens.
Chester was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and served as an aerial tail gunner during World War II.
On Jan. 25, 1941, he married Naomi C. Estep and they celebrated nearly 68 years together. Chester worked in the body shop of Hamilton Chevrolet in Chesapeake, Ohio, retiring in 1987. He moved from Ashland, Ky., to the Richland County area following his retirement. He attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Bellville and was a member of VFW Post 5101.
Chester enjoyed bowling but mostly spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Naomi Stevens of Bellville; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Tom Pollock of Lexington, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Kay Stevens of Bellville; five grandchildren and their spouses, Cheryl L. and Alan Sheets of Butler, Ohio, Pamela K. and Scott Walters of Perrysville, Ohio, Lori L. and Ken Mc-Kee of Bellville, Amy and Steve Pope of Tampa, Fla., and Todd and Amy Pollock of Flint, Mich.; eight great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Shannon, Jacob, Jonathan, Bailey, Landen, Austin and Xander; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Joanne Stevens of Brown City, Mich.; four sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Sue Stewart of Marion, Ohio, who selflessly tended to Chester’s needs in his home, Ida McCarty of Albany, Ky., Audrey Neal of Stark, Fla., and Dolly and Ken Daniels of Ashland, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Stevens; a daughter, Linda D. Stevens; two brothers, Curtis and Edward Stevens; and a sister, Lucille Fowler.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Bellville Snyder Funeral Home in Bellville, Ohio. A service will be at noon Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in the chapel of Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ky., with visitation after 11:30 a.m. Pastor Bill Kennedy will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association Northwest Ohio Chapter made through the funeral home.

Robert L. Smith - 1928-2008
Robert L. Smith, 80, of Naples, Ky., died Oct. 1, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Smith was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Meadow Creek, W.Va., a son of the late Perry C. and Emily Jane Hume Smith. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Smith, and sisters Bobbi Morris and Betty White.
He was a journeyman electrician with IBEW Local 317 and a 53-year member of Pentecostal Holiness Tabernacle in Flatwoods, Ky.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years as of Sept. 10, Jane Ann Hale Smith of Naples; two sons, the Rev. Jeffery E. Smith (Donna) of Danleyton, Ky., and Steven R. Smith (Sherri) of Greenup, Ky.; a daughter, Stephanie L. Thompson (Russ) of Cannonsburg, Ky.; four grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Jennifer Smith, Tabitha Mullins and Valerie Lewis; two great-grandchildren, Isaac Lewis and Josiah Lewis; a brother, Perry C. Smith of Williamstown, W.Va.; and two sisters, Hearthia Rizzuto of Metairie, La., and Maude Ellen Richardson of Ashland, Ky.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Pentecostal Holiness Tabernacle in Flatwoods by the Rev. Lloyd L. Bailey. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Clarence C. McGlone - 1919-2008
Clarence C. McGlone, 89, of Longwood, Fla., died on Sept. 14, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Collette McGlone; a sister, Virgie Humphreys of Carter County, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
McGlone was born on Jan. 2, 1919, in Carter County, to the late William Green McGlone and Margaret Genora Kiser McGlone. He was one of 12 children, including the late Ezekiel Raleigh McGlone, Mahala Hazel McGinnis, Eva McGinnis, Lottie Burge, James Hervie McGlone, Mae Morgan, Marie Frances McGlone, Beatrice McGlone, Prudie Holbrook and Bessie Akins.
McGlone was a graduate of Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired in 1976 from a career as a civilian training officer with the Air Force Logistics Command. He was designated a Kentucky colonel in 1982.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at Carter Christian Church in Carter, Ky., by the Rev. Larry Barrell. Interment will be in the A.B. (Gold) Kiser Cemetery in Carter.
The family will receive visitors at the church after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Nadine Thompson Helderbrand - 1922-2008
Nadine Thompson Helderbrand, 86, of Rose Ridge, Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 2, 2008, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky.
She was born Sept. 6, 1922, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Fred and Idle Logan Thompson.
Nadine was a Christian, a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Luster Arnold Helderbrand; a son, Eugene Helderbrand; four brothers, Bill Thompson, Burnace Thompson, Glen Thompson and Junior Thompson; and a sister, Virginia Reeder.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janice Helderbrand of Morehead; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marcella and Phillip Alexander of Conroe, Texas, and Hazel and Edd Branham and Esther and Keith Bays, all of Olive Hill; two brothers, Clyde Thompson of Winchester, Ind., and Hobert Thompson of Wilkison, Ind.; and a sister, Justine Thompson of Shiloh, Ohio. She also leaves nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill by Brother Lewis Davis and Brother Gayle Price. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery on Rose Ridge in Olive Hill.

Thelma Anita Keyes - 1930-2008
Thelma Anita Keyes, 78, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born Aug. 4, 1930, in Ashland, a daughter of the late William Franklin and Doris Bayes Sexton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Willard Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Keyes, in 2003; a sister, Virginia Bowling; and three brothers, Claude Sexton, Millard Bus Sexton and Billy Joe Sexton.
Her survivors include two sisters-in-law, Roxie Sexton of Johns Run, Ky., and Joyce Keyes of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by David Wilcox and Walter Wilcox. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 3 and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Janet Marvine Bishop - 1948-2008
Our loving Janet Marvine Bishop went to be with the Lord on Oct. 2, 2008.
She was born June 22, 1948, in Ulysses, Ky. She was a 1970 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School.
Surviving is her loving husband of 23 years, Ronnie L. Bishop.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Monroe Castle and Vessie Mae O’Bryan Castle; two sisters, Maxine Hurst and Cora Blair; and two brothers, Aubrey Eugene Castle and Hoyle E. Castle.
Along with her husband, Janet is survived by two sons, Daniel J. and Elthenna Price of Catlettsburg, Ky., and David H. Price of Kentucky; three daughters, Deborah A. and Rick Blevins of Athalia, Ohio, Ronda L. James of Coal Grove, Ohio, and Renee A. and Jonathan Smith of Inman, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Chloe, Alli and Katlyn Price, Elle Behnke, Deborah Blevins, Keela Honaker and Nicole and Justin Smith; a great-grandchild, Dylan Honaker; two brothers, Thomas and Ana Castle of Rochester, Mich., and Lonnie Paul and Ethel Castle of Pontiac, Mich.; four sisters, Adeline Lee Castle of Ashland, Ky., Jewell Lemaster of Waterford, Mich., Beatrice Mabry of Olive Hill, Ky., and Lou Vernie Blinn of Live Oak, Fla.; and lots of nieces and nephews whom she adored, including a special niece, Gloria Blair; and two special friends, Diane Fradd and Kaye Murdock, who helped Ronnie and Janet in her final days and hours.
She was a cook, waitress and dietitian for many years, then a CNA with Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kentucky and finally worked in home health care with American Medix of Coal Grove, Ohio, and Quality Care of South Point, Ohio.
She was a member of Princess Chapel Church in Cannonsburg, Ky., and loved singing in the choir. She was also a member of the Family Moose Center in Ironton, where she worked in the auxiliary as a chaplain, guide and senior regent helping many, many children and organizations in the community.
Janet’s final farewell was she shall meet you in Heaven!
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Princess Chapel Church by Clell Lucas. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa, Ky.
