Betty Criss - 1947-2008

Betty June Howard Criss, 60, wife of Charles “Bill” Criss of Westwood passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008.

Betty was born Dec. 7, 1947, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Charles and Lena Boggs Howard.

Betty was a counselor at Ponderosa Elementary School and a member of the Kentucky Education Association, Boyd County Education Association, National Education Association and Kentucky School Counselors Association. She was a member of Westwood Christian Baptist Church, where she played the organ and the piano.

She is survived by her husband, Charles “Bill” Criss; a son, Charles “Billy” (Kisha) Criss of Westwood; three daughters, Karen (John) Susco of Lexington, Ky., Christine (Mark) McDowell of Ashland and Deborah Criss of Westwood; five grandchildren, Geneva, Destiny and Will Susco, Bethany McDowell and Ally Criss; three brothers, Marvin “Shannon” Howard of Westwood, Eddie Howard of West Hyannis Port, Mass., and Charles David Howard of Willowood, Ohio; and four sisters, Joyce Bramblett and Donna Parsons, both of Ashland, Jean Carr of Greenup and Teresa Maze of Salt Lick, Ky.; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Westwood Christian Baptist Church by Pastor James “Butch” Crum. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.



Aileene Combs - 1931-2008

Aileene Sloan Combs, 77, of Catlettsburg, Ky., surrounded by her loving family went home to be with her Lord and Savior early Thursday morning, Sept. 4, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Mrs. Combs was born Aug. 3, 1931, in Catlettsburg, a daughter of the late John Sloan Jr., and Mable Brown Sloan.

She was a homemaker, member of Burnaugh Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member of the choir, and loved to travel.

Aileene is survived by a loving family, her husband of 54 years, Tom Combs Sr.; a daughter, Belinda Stacy and her husband, Donald of Catlettsburg; a son, Tom Combs Jr. of Catlettsburg; three grandchildren, Breanna Dawn Stacy, Anne Elizabeth Combs, and Benjamin Combs; a special family friend, Ken Adams; and a host of family and friends, all to mourn her passing.

A funeral service in remembrance of Aileene Combs will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the Burnaugh Baptist Church. A message of comfort will be offered by Pastor Pete Miller.

Those wishing to call on the Combs family may do so from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Final rest will follow at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Betty Morgan - 1944-2008

Betty Morgan, 64, of Pedro, Ohio, formerly of Greenup, Ky., went home to be with her Lord and her husband Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Morgan was born July 3, 1944, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Homer and Colleen Gibson Crisp.

She was a member of the Plum Grove Baptist Church and the women’s auxiliary of the Greenup VFW.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Morgan; one brother, Roger Crisp; and three grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Homer Morgan and Simon Morgan, both of Greenup; four daughters, Barbara (David) Harmon and Mary (Charlie) Jenkins, both of Ironton, Ohio, Donna Morgan of Greenup and Beth Stapleton of Ironton; two sisters, Suzanne Malone of Pedro and Rita (Jeff) Frazier of Flatwoods, Ky.; one sister-in-law, Margaret Crisp of Waterloo, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Danny Kelly. Burial will be in Plum Grove-Collins Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight and one hour before the funeral on Saturday at the funeral home.



William P. Ruggles - 1940-2008

Mr. William P. Ruggles, 68, of Beechy Creek Road, South Shore, Ky., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born June 15, 1940, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Leroy Ruggles and Phoeba Huffman Ruggles.

He was a retired mechanic and a member of Tri-County Church of Christ of Quincy, Ky. He was also a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Mangus Ruggles of South Shore; one son, William Dale “Billie” Ruggles of Portsmouth, Ohio; one daughter, Wanda Piatt of Somerset, Ky.; a stepson, Tom Duncan of South Shore; two brothers, David Ruggles of Lobelville, Tenn., and Elbert Ruggles of Grove City, Ohio; and four sisters, Geneva Patrick of South Shore, Bernice Logan of Greenup, Barbara Fisher of Garrison, Ky., and Juanita Hale of London, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are a daughter, Doris Jean Ruggles; four brothers, Carl, Lewis, Earl and Ben Ruggles; and three sisters, Virginia Braden, Lucy Gray and Pinney Ruggles.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at the Granny Thomas Cemetery with Brother James D. Spinnati officiating.

Services are by the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.



James Alfred McGlone - 1924-2008

James Alfred McGlone, 84, of Grayson, died Thursday morning, Sept. 4, 2008 at his residence.

He was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Boone Grassy, Ky., a son of the late Russell and Erie Messer McGlone.

He was retired after 37 years as a Kentucky highway engineer, a member of the Grayson First Church of Christ, and a past elder of the Oak Grove Church of Christ. Mr. McGlone was a World War II Navy veteran serving from 1941 to 1945.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Buck McGlone, Deward McGlone, Howard McGlone, Leonard McGlone, Donald McGlone and Curtis McGlone; and three sisters, Della Burchett, Alma Mayo and Maxine Montgomery.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Christine Rupert McGlone; three sons, Chris McGlone and his wife, Ellen of Centerville, Va., David McGlone and his wife, Judy of Grayson, Ky., and Carl Wayne McGlone and his wife, Anna of Grayson; four grandchildren, Callie Gollihue and her husband, Doug, of Lexington, Ky., Jason McGlone and his wife, Hannah, of Grayson, Caleb McGlone of Grayson and Leah McGlone of Centerville; one brother, Herman McGlone of Grayson; and one sister, Christine Lowe of Grayson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson with Tim Carper officiating. Burial will follow in East Carter County Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the East Carter JROTC. Serving as pallbearers will be George Scott, Jim Phillips, Curt Bair, Carl Blevins, Doug Gollihue and Virgil Messer. Honorary pallbearers will be Harmon Suttles, Charlie McGuire, Ronnie Miller, Dempsy Mullins, Winnie Jones and Amon Yates.

Donald F. Kizzee - 1930-2008

Donald F. Kizzee, 77, of Clarksville, Tenn., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 in Gateway Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Neal-Tarpley Chapel in Clarksville with Dr. Roger Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service today at the funeral home.

He was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Ironton, Ohio. He was a loving husband of 56 years. His wife, Barbara A. Kizzee survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Clarksville Rotary Club, and was past president of the Clarksville Homebuilders Association. He also worked with Habitat for Humanity and was a Boy Scout leader.

Mr. Kizzee was retired from TVA and was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sherman Kizzee and a brother, Lowell Kizzee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Evelyn Kizzee; a son, Kevin Kizzee (Elizabeth); a daughter, Karen A. Petty (Steven); a sister, Elaine Nunnery; and three grandchildren.

Leona Griffith

Leona Chaffin Griffith, 76, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Boyd County, died Monday in Whitehall Nursing Facility in Columbus.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery in Rush.

Minerva Bull - 1943-2008

Minerva Ann Bull, 65, of Flatwoods, died Wednesday at her residence.

She was born Aug. 21, 1943.

Her husband, Albert Harry Bull Sr., preceded her in death.

David Wayne Abrams, 35, of West Portsmouth, Ohio, died Wednesday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

He was born Jan. 24, 1973, in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Dorothy Wurts, 92, of Louisa, died Wednesday in Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa.

She was born March 2, 1916, in Boyd County.
