Doug Grimm - 1920-2007
George Douglas “Doug” Grimm went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in King’s Daughters Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Doug was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Paintsville, Ky., to the late Shady and Virgie Price Grimm.
He was a meat cutter for Emery Guilliam Meats retiring after 29 years of service and then became co-owner of Tri-State Fence Co. for 20 plus years. He proudly served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. He was a member of Westwood United Baptist Church for 53 years, serving as treasurer for 13 years and deacon for 18 years. Doug was ordained as a minister in 1978 and served as moderator of the church from 1984 to 1993.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; four sisters; a daughter, Virginia Grimm Stevens and one grandson, Matt Arthur.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Jarvis Grimm; a daughter, Debra Henson of Ashland, Ky.; a son, Douglas Michael Grimm of Chesapeake, Ohio; a son-in-law, Claude “Steve” Stevens of Alabama; grandchildren, Doug Stambaugh of Ashland, Teri and Tony Thomas of Flatwoods, Ky., Tracy Arthur of Chesapeake, Devon and Josh Cook of Flatwoods, Tonya and Eric Chaffins of Ashland, Keith and Amber Henson of Ashland and Jaimie Grimm of California; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Westwood United Baptist Church by Elders Clarence Thompson Jr., A.J. Williams and Clayton Oliver. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Military services will be by Kenova American Legion Post No. 93.
Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood, Ky., from 6 to 9 p.m. and two hours before the funeral service on Thursday at the church.
Willard Edward White - 1921-2007
Willard Edward White, 85, of Tollesboro, Ky., passed away on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at his residence.
He was born April 5, 1921, in Fleming County, Ky., a son of the late Vinard Edward White and Anna Mae Reeder White.
He is survived by his wife, Louanna Bryant White; one daughter, Sandra (Rick) Lanthorn of Tollesboro; two sons, Terry (Karen) White and Rex White, all of Tollesboro; four grandchildren, Amy White, Ashley White, Chelsi White and Alan White; one great-grandchild, Chloe White; and three sisters, Lena Lay of Orlando, Fla., Phyllis Montgomery of Flemingsburg, Ky., and Norma Mason of Chillicothe, Ohio.
A sister, Ruby Doyle and two brothers, Harry White and Don White, preceded him in death.
Mr. White was a tug boat captain for Ashland Oil for 45 years, attended Tollesboro United Methodist Church, was the original board member of the Tollesboro Christian School and started White’s Hams in 1983.
The services will be at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 16, 2007, at the Barbour & Son Funeral Home in Tollesboro. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Mount Carmel, Ky.
Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15, 2007.

A.V. Rash - 1939-2007
A.V. Rash, 67, of Worthington, Ky., passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born in 1939 in Herrin, Ill., a son of the late Phyllis McDowell. He attended the University of Kentucky and later graduated from Ohio State University’s AEP Management Development Program and the Ohio Institute for Economic Development. He was the former manager of PEASI Ambulance Service, retired from American Electric Power and presently was the executive director of the East Park Industrial Park.
He was past chairman of Bluegrass State Skills Corporation Board and Ashland Alliance Board. He was also a member of the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board, TENCO Workforce Investment Board, Leadership of Kentucky Alumni, FIVCO, Kentucky Industrial Development Council, National Council for Urban Economic Development, and Appalachian Foothills Advisory Board. He was state trustee of Russell F.O.P. Lodge No. 45 and the advisory (revolving loan program) board for Greenup County Judge Executive Robert Carpenter. He received the “Governor’s Economic Leadership Award” in 1997 and the FIVCO Area Development District’s Presidential Award in 1999 and 2001 for work with the East Park Industrial Park Project.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Rash; stepfather, Carl Dill; and a brother, George Rash.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ann Terrell Rash; daughters, Terri Barnes (Scott) of Flatwoods, Ky., and Carla Raiche of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, John Rash (Dianna) of Franklin, Ky.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and Ed Blackburn of Frankfort, Ky., and nieces and nephews.
A service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with the Rev. Keith Cooper, minister. Cremation will follow.

Faye Tackett - 1940-2007
Faye Tackett, 66, of Wurtland, Ky., entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. Tackett was born Feb. 28, 1940, in Wurtland, a daughter of the late Jeff and Kathleen Melvin Meade. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Lee Meade, Denny Harold Meade and William Robert “Bob” Meade.
She was a member of the Old Steam Baptist Church in Wurtland.
Surviving are her loving husband, Earl Tackett; one daughter, Ann (Chris) Rollo of Middleburg, Fla.; three sisters, Della Jean Woods of Wurtland, Virginia Meade of Flatwoods, Ky., and Darlene Woods of Russell, Ky.; two brothers, David Wendell Meade of Wurtland and Jeff Meade Jr. of Greenup, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at the Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky., by the Rev. Denver Woods and the Rev. Danny Kelly. Burial will be in Melvin Cemetery in Wurtland.

Opal Lawson Sparks - 1926-2007
Mrs. Opal Lawson Sparks, age 80, of Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in the St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, Ky.
Mrs. Sparks was born March 3, 1926, in Carter County, Ky., and is the daughter of the late Russell and Tina Sammons Lawson.
She is preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Lawson Jr., Jack Lawson, Billy Lawson and Gene Lawson.
Mrs. Sparks was a member of the First Christian Church of Olive Hill for 44 years. She also was a life long homemaker.
Opal is survived by her husband of 63 years, Glenn Ross Sparks; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Cecil Hewlett of Piketon, Ohio, and Kathy and L.G. "Buzz" Fletcher of Greenwood, Ind.; four grandchildren, Kim McLean of Waverly, Ohio, and Claire Fletcher, Emma Fletcher, and Owen Fletcher, all of Greenwood; one great- grandchild, Sheridan McLean of Waverly; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harlan Lawson and Wayne "Joey" and Maxine Lawson, both of Olive Hill, and John A. and Dottie Lawson of Flemingsburg, Ky.; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Dexter Fielding of Olive Hill; one sister-in-law, Lorene Lawson of Olive Hill; and one brother-in-law, George Logan of Mansfield, Ohio.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother Tim Waggoner officiating. Burial will follow in the Tick Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Charles Newman, age 79, of Iron Hill, Ky., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
He was born Sept. 2, 1927, in Iron Hill, a son of the late Charley and Ada Carper Newman.
He was a heavy equipment operator, a farmer and a member of Iron Hill Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Meade Newman; a grandson, Randy Kitchen; two brothers, Ross Newman and Russell Newman; two sisters, Bonnie Newman and Hazel Everman; and two brothers-in-law, Hobe Harlow and Lloyd Everman.
His survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda Sue and Charles Kitchen and Debra Johnson, all of Grayson, Ky.; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Bobby and Dianna Newman of Grayson, Jerry and Lou Newman of Wurtland, Ky., and Charles Tom and Doris Newman of Lexington, Ky.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Gladys Harlow, and Ruby and Harmon Suttles, all of Grayson and Betty and Bob Garrabrant of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Raymond and Charlene Newman of Grayson and Ralph and Eunice Newman of Greenup, Ky.; his former wife, Jean Terry Newman of Iron Hill; a very special friend, Betty Stephens of Grayson; an aunt, Hattie Margaret Hart of Grayson; and grandchildren, Sandy Hamm, Ronda Strong, Fred Kitchen, Matt Newman, Tim Newman, Tomila Newman, Lillian Newman, Tommy Newman, Dustin Wolfe, Jarrod Newman, Amy Hall, Bill Newman, Chris Johnson, Jason Johnson, Patty Marshall, Leann Johnson, Brandon Williams, Rebecca Williams and Katrina Mitchell.
