ASHLAND — Dorothy Willis Bennett, 90, of Ashland, died Nov. 11, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Dorothy was born March 18, 1923, in Charleston, W.Va., a daughter of the late John Charles and Birdie Kiser Willis. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by brothers, Curtis Willis and Gilbert Willis.

Dorothy graduated from Ashland High School in 1939 and received a chemistry degree from Marshall University. Dorothy was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Ashland. She was an avid tennis player and participated in many local leagues throughout her life. She was also an accomplished pianist and loved classical music. Dorothy was a founding member of the Continental Dance Club.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Charles William Bennett of Ashland; two sons, Dr. William R. Bennett and wife Ann of Spokane, Wash., and  John H. Bennett of Ashland; a daughter, Jeannette B. Cherry and husband Chuck of Monument, Colo.; grandchildren, Allison Bennett of New York, N.Y., Caroline Bennett of Spokane, Charles B. Cherry of Dallas, Texas, John S. Cherry of Laramie, Wyo., W. Bryan Cherry of Monument and Ashley Cherry of Monument; nephews Greg Willis and wife Geri of Ashland, Geoffrey Willis and wife Jo Ann of Anaheim, Calif., and Wayne Willis and wife Susan of Rochester, N.Y.; a niece, Barbara Sedia and husband Bob of Mercerville, N.J.; and a host of extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland with Pastor Harold Moore presiding. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 1 p.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
