James D. Blanton - 1943-2013

COLUMBUS, OH — James D. Blanton of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Dec. 19, 2013, in Forest Hills Center, after a long illness with Frontal-Temporal Dementia.

He was born Oct. 22, 1943, in Ashland. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Lula Caudill Blanton; sisters, Genoa and Frances; and brother “Red” Blanton.

He graduated from Ashland High School and the Columbus College of Art and Design. He was a well respected graphic designer in the community, starting at Columbus Banknote and later becoming a partner at Workshop Design, before starting his own business in 1985. In the late 1980’s he became one of the first in Columbus to use the Macintosh platform for graphic design and thrived as a consultant in that area. Jim was also one of the founders of the Columbus Ohio Darters Association in the early 1970’s, where we met lifelong friends and was very proud to have the first ton 70 out in league play.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Shirley “Pinky” Blanton; and he was a proud father of James Scott Blanton and wife Corey. The apples of his eyes were his grandchildren, Elijah James, Emma Jacqueline, Ella Jordyn and Evan Joshua David Blanton, who all reside in San Diego, Calif.  Jim is also survived by his brothers Bill, Drexel and Danny Blanton of Ashland and Gary Blanton of Nashville, Tenn.; and sister Leatha Farley of Columbus. He was loved by his many nieces and nephews and was a true role model for them, loving his family more than anything.

Jim was an avid golfer, who grew up caddying on the golf course with his brothers, and enjoyed playing with family and friends. Scott says “He is playing on the longest fairway to heaven now.”

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the North Congregational United Church of Christ, 2040 W. Henderson Road, Columbus, with a reception following in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers and if desired, memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be sent to The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Fund in Neurology 302185, OSU Medical Center Development, 660 Ackerman Road, Box 183112, Columbus, OH 43218

Dr. Douglas Scharre was Jim’s physician who diagnosed and guided us through this heartbreaking journey, and he is the principle investigator for this research. He is also the medical director of Forest Hills where Jim resided for two and a half years. Jim donated his brain for research and hopes this may help some in the future. Heartfelt thanks to all the people at Forest Hills who took such good care of him, especially Gail Greenley, the director of nursing who loves each and every one who is under her care. A special thank you to Tridia Hospice, who watched over Jim so carefully.
