Mary Helen Slone, 88, of Ashland, went home to be with her Lord following a brief illness Sunday morning, Jan. 5, 2014, with her loving family by her side.
She was born March 18, 1925, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Garrett Norman and Ella Robert Brawner Greene.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Slone Sr.; a daughter, Brenda Castle Slone, in 1998; a brother, Robert Greene; and two sisters, Dorothy Gibson and Alice Frasure.
Mary Helen was a 1942 graduate of Boyd County High School, attended Ashland Business College and was employed at Greene and Pennington’s. She was a 75-year charter member of 39th Street Baptist Church of Jesus Christ, where she taught the children’s Sunday school class and was a charter member of the Women’s Circle. She was a 55-year charter member of Hillendale Homemakers and served as a mentor for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) at First Baptist Church in Russell. Mary Helen was a homemaker extraordinaire and helped with 4-H extension in the Boyd County schools. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and “mamaw” to countless children and adults.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Eloise and Paul Shrewsbury, Anna Slone Cox and Larry Cox and Teresa and Michael Gillam, all of Ashland; a son, James Edward and Teresa Dawn Slone Jr. of Ashland; a brother, Dr. John C. and Gwen Greene of San Rafael, Calif.; a sister, Janet Ruth and Kerry Lester of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Greene of Ashland; a brother-in-law, John W. and Monnie Rhea Slone of Lawrenceburg; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
