Octavia Brown Clark 1916-2013

SANDY HOOK — Octavia Brown Clark passed away Dec. 16, 2013, in Elliott Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, making her stay on earth 97 years, 1 month and 12 days.

She was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Weeksbury, in Floyd County. She was the daughter of the late Noah Brown and the late Spicy Moore Brown Newsome.

She was married to Stallard Clark on Oct. 14, 1939. They spent their 49 years of marriage in McDowell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stallard Clark; two sisters, Hattie and Dakota Brown; half sisters Nora Newsome, Naomi Russell and Nova Osman; four half brothers, Delmar Newsome, Charles Edward Newsome and James Marvin Newsome; two stepsisters, Catherine Pope and Dollie Ervin; one step-brother, Alvin Newsome; one son-in-law, Joe Adkins; and a host of relatives and friends.

She went to Caney Creek Community Center at the age of 11, having completed the seventh and eighth grades, four years of high school and two years of college at that institution. She also spent one year at Morehead State College. She was a teacher at McDowell for 16 years. After leaving that profession, she and her husband were part owners in a general store at McDowell for 23 years.

She had been a member of the Left Beaver Regular Baptist Church since Nov. 27, 1988, being baptized by her brothers in Christ, Elder Adrian Hall and Paul Jacobs. She loved that church and was faithful in attending before becoming a member. After moving to Sandy Hook, Octavia became a member of the First Baptist Church.

Octavia, or Granny as she was more affectionately known by, loved her family. She had a long and prosperous life and loved spending time with her family and making candy for them. She was always pleasant and had a smile for everyone. She will be missed by her family more than she could ever know.

She is survived by one daughter, Jewell Adkins Church; one granddaughter, Jessica Simmons; two great-grandchildren, Megan Simmons West and Tyler Simmons; and three great-great-grandchildren, Mia Jewel West, Parker Ray West and Brannon Clark West; one grandson-in-law, Carl Simmons; a great-grandson-in-law, Michael West; and one sister, Marevia Cregor and her husband, Harold.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, with Pastor Charles Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
