Delbert Cecil Crank 1943-2013

CARTER — Mr. Delbert Cecil Crank, 70, of Olive Hill, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 18, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 5, 1943, in Carter County, a son of the late Cecil and Cora Lee Rogers Crank.

Delbert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a die-hard UK basketball fan and enjoyed sharing family celebrations and attending bluegrass festivals.

Delbert proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received many medals. He worked several years for the Campbell Soup Co. and General Motors Corp. of Ohio. He retired from Northeast Area Development, where he was director of the weatherization program. Delbert was a dedicated member of American Legion Post 138 of Olive Hill and served several terms as commander. He designed and developed the Carter County War Memorial in front of the American Legion post. It was the first of its kind to honor those from the county lost in every modern war. In addition to his commanding duties, he started the tradition of Santa Claus visiting the schools. He played Santa for 35 years and loved every minute of it. Delbert was a member of the Gregoryville VFW and was a longtime member of the DAV. He was also a member of Olive Hill United Methodist Church.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Crank, and two brothers, Glenn Crank and Marvin Crank.

Delbert is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia “Patty” Duncan Crank; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tammy Moore of Olive Hill and Susan and Mark Dennison of Chicago; five grandchildren, who he loved more than life, Adam Moore of Olive Hill, Erin, Erica and Elisa VanMeter of Frankfort and Collin Dennison of Chicago; a brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Joyce Crank of Atlanta; a sister and brother-in-law, Joletta and Gale Morgan of Olive Hill; and two very special people who were like his own, Rick Stephens and Christy Stephens Brown, both of Olive Hill. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 20, 2013, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill by his nephew, Paul Cline, Brother John Lambert and Brother Bob Burton. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill, with military rites by American Legion Post 138 of Olive Hill.
