Danny Ray Simpson - 1945-2008
Danny Ray Simpson, age 63, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 3, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 23, 1945, in Ashland, a son of the late Robert Hughes and Mary Alice Garvin Simpson.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Michael Simpson and grandchildren, Emma, Molly and Hannah.
He was an Ashland business owner and a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. His fraternal record included being a member and past master of Hampton Lodge No. 235 F.&A.M. and a dual membership with Fred M. Gross Lodge No. 953 F.&A.M., a past master of Kadosh of Indra Consistory of the Covington Scottish Rite Bodies and a 33rd Mason, Inspector General Honorary of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction, a past Excellent High Priest of Morehead Chapter No. 168, R.A.M., past Illustrious Master of Morehead Council No. 45 R.&S.M., a member of Morehead Commandery No. 53 K.T. of the Morehead York Rite Bodies, a past potentate of El Hasa Shriners, a past president of the South Atlantic Shrine Ritualistic Cast Association, a former officer of the South Atlantic Shrine Association, a member of the Big Sandy Court No. 172, Royal Order of Jesters, a member and past Camaxtli of El Mexa Teocalli No. 98 Order of Quetzalcoatl and a O.K.E.T., the highest honor given by this organization.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Hood Simpson of Ashland; two sons, Robert Owen (Melissa) Simpson and Adam Craig Simpson, all of Ashland; two daughters, Susan Frances (LTC(P)Michael) Graese of Fredericksburg, Va., and Kimberly Kristine (David) Thompson of Ashland; a brother, James David Simpson of Greenup, Ky.; and grandchildren, Corey, Taylor, Evan, Ross, Haley, Kyle, Megan, Brett and Sidney.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Ronnie Mayse. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, Dec. 5, 2008 at the funeral home with a Scottish Rite service at 7 p.m., and a Masonic service at 7:15 p.m. by the Fred M. Gross Lodge No. 953 F.&A.M.

Thelma Moore Floyd - 1922-2008
Thelma Moore Floyd, 86, of Route 2, Greenup, Ky., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.
Mrs. Floyd was born March 4, 1922, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Julian and Ida Mae Grizzle Moore.
She was a homemaker and life long member of the Church of Christ at Load, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Floyd; four brothers, Roy Moore, Lloyd Moore, Hiram Moore and Winford Moore; and three sisters, Elva Sue Vogus, Alma Music and Darlene Bradley.
She is survived by four sons, Larry (Wendolyn) Floyd of Greenup, Garry (Sandra) Floyd of Oldtown, Ky., James G. “Butch” Floyd of Lewisburg, Tenn., and Jerry “Chuck” (Cheryl) Floyd of Greenup; two daughters, Carolyn “Connie” (Robert) Walker of Huntington, W.Va., and Barbara “Bobbie” Bartholomew of Greenup; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Danny Brown. Burial will be in Warnock Cemetery in Warnock, Ky.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until funeral time Saturday.

Douglas E. Cooper - 1922-2008
Douglas E. Cooper, 86, of South Shore, Ky., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008.
Mr. Cooper was born April 3, 1922, in Kehoe, Ky., a son of the late John P. and Carrie Duncan Cooper.
He was a retired steelworker from Empire-Detroit Steel Mill in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was a retired farmer.
He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, served as song evangelist and song leader, Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School superintendent for many Nazarene churches in the area and was a member of the Lloyd Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Thelma Darnell Cooper; three sons, Douglas (Linda) Cooper of Stevensville, Mich., Keith (Penny) Cooper of South Shore and Dr. Juett (Rachel) Cooper of Russell, Ky.; one sister, Delores Lawson of Cincinnati, Ohio; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by his sons, Juett and Keith who are both Nazarene ministers. Burial will be in Kehoe Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and one hour before the funeral on Sunday at the funeral home.

Homer E. Edwards - 1921-2008
Homer E. Edwards, age 86, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Dec. 3, 2008, in Boyd Nursing and Rehab Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Edwards was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Harry E. and Eva Mae Curtis Edwards. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Randall.
He was a conductor with the C&O Railroad and worked 12 years at Bellefonte Country Club. He was a member of Greenup Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the choir, a Kentucky colonel, a member of UTU, an avid fan of Marshall and Russell football and loved family and friends and his special dog, KOKO.
Surviving are his wife to whom he was married 69 years, Jeanne Lindsay Edwards of Flatwoods; sons, Jack E. Edwards of Greenup, Ky., and Tracy (Julie) Edwards of Flatwoods; daughters, Sandra (Charles) Bevans of South Point, Ohio, Brenda (Doug) Calhoun of Russell, Ky., and Cherie Duerk of Flatwoods; sister, Erma Mae (Donald) Jarrell of Huntington, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Jack Edwards and the Rev. Ken Gowin. Committal service and burial will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods (meet at the cemetery).
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at the funeral home.

Marie Conley Fankell - 1920-2008
Marie Conley Fankell, 88, of Grayson, died Thursday morning, Dec. 4, 2008, in the Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson.
She was born May 20, 1920, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Mullins Conley. She was a homemaker and a member of the Wilson Creek Missionary Baptist Church, the Eastern Star, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonel’s.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Fankell; one daughter, Clarice Johnson; one brother, Clifford Conley; and one sister, Ethel Shavers.
She is survived by three sons, Clarence “Sonny” Fankell of Grayson, Larry D. Fankell of Grayson, and Kenny Fankell of Olive Hill; two daughters, Teresa Wright of Grayson and Betty Brown of Greenup; two sisters, Janice Watson of Ashland and Jessie Barnhill of Grayson; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Wilson Creek Missionary Baptist Church by Brother Mike Blankenship. Burial will follow in the Cribbs Hill Cemetery.

Edna Davenport - 1923-2008
Edna M. Davenport, 85, of Ashland, died Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born June 22, 1923, in Ashland.
Her husband, Pittman Davenport, died in 1979.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum Chapel.
There is no visitation.

She was born Sept. 22, 1918, in Johnson County.
