Irene Greene - 1919-2008
Irene Booth Greene passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior from Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility on Saturday morning, Nov. 29, 2008.
Mrs. Greene was 89 years of age, a daughter of the late Henry and Dixie Fields Booth, born Feb. 11, 1919, in Lawrence County, Ky. She was the wife of Garrett O. Greene, who preceded her in death in April 1998. She worked in the health care industry as a receptionist and was a member of 39th Street Baptist Church.
Left behind is a son, Gary (Sandy) Greene of Ashland; a brother, Calvin Booth of Tennessee; two sisters, Gladys (Duke) Kight of Huntington and Alma (Edcel) Branham of Fairborn, Ohio; two loving grandsons, Andrew (Pat) Greene and David (Susan) Greene; four precious great-grandchildren, Maddy, age 7, Spencer, age 5, Zach, age 7 and Hannah, age 5; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Booth, Noah Booth and Everett Booth; and two sisters, Ruth Lawson and Siss Stratton.
A funeral service for Mrs. Greene will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor David Lynch will offer a message of comfort, with a heartfelt eulogy by Mike Greene and prayer given by Mabel Johnson. Committal to be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
The Greene family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Vicki Wallace - 1958-2008
Vicki Lynn Rayburn Wallace, 50, of Flatwoods, born Jan. 9, 1958, to Patricia Howell Rayburn of Russell and the late L. Phillip Rayburn Jr., died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington after an extended illness.
Vicki was baptized at 11 and was a member of First Christian Church (Bridges) of Russell and recently rededicated her life. She was a 1976 graduate of Russell High School, where she was a member of the band. She was employed part time at Little Angel Day Care Center in Russell.
Survivors include a son, Lawrence “Larry” Andrew Rayburn of Flatwoods; a daughter, Jayme Shay Rayburn of Flatwoods; a brother, Phillip Andrew “Andy” (Diana) Rayburn of Charleston, W.Va.; three aunts, Ella Louise Lyon and Bertha Alice (Carl) Warnock, both of Ashland, and Sheila Jean (Gary) Robinson of Flatwoods; two great-aunts, Belva Miller Robinette of Ashland and S. Maxine Preston Tackett of Flatwoods; and a great-uncle, Lester Tackett of Flatwoods.
Also preceding her in death were grandparents Lawrence P. and Ruth Preston Rayburn Sr. and Hager and Effie Miller Howell; two uncles, Donald Andrew Howell and John S. Lyon; and two great-aunts, Carlie Miller Elswick and Mary Scott Miller.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carman Funeral Home in Russell by Minister James Edward Rayburn. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Bruce Garvin - 1923-2008
Heaven opened its gates Saturday, Nov. 29 2008, and welcomed home Bruce Garvin, 85, of Danleyton, a loving husband, father and friend.
He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Danner Garvin, who survives at his home.
Bruce was born May 25, 1923, in Flatwoods, a son of the late William “Pop” and Rachel Blevins Garvin.
Bruce worked nearly 42 years at C&O railroad in the maintenance away department as a carpenter, as well as on the farm where he fathered nine children and spent his little leisure time raising crops, livestock, hunting and picking the banjo.
He was a man of God, and helped build the Flatwoods Freewill Baptist Church, where the funeral will take place, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Surviving besides his wife are four sons, Larry and Alene Garvin of Danleyton, Bruce Michael and Connie Garvin of Westwood, John Daniel and Pam Garvin of South Shore and Tom and Ernie Sue Garvin of Catlettsburg; three daughters, Mary Lou and Frank Kiser of Danleyton, Polly and David Boyd of Flatwoods and Anita and Shannon Deerfield of South Shore; a brother, Bert Garvin of Flatwoods; a sister, Ruby Roush of Flatwoods; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
A son, Ernest Wade Garvin; a daughter, Molly; two brothers, John Garvin and Ernest Garvin; and three sisters, Jenny Blanton, Grace Franklin and Dorothy Smith Morris, also preceded him in death.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Flatwoods Freewill Baptist Church on Crescent Drive in Flatwoods by the Rev. Chuck Keesee and Brother Danny Brown. Burial will be in “The Strawberry Patch” on his farm.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup. As an alternative to flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice.
Russell Hensley - 1931-2008
Russell C. “Billy” Hensley, 77, of Argillite, died Thursday in Argillite.
He was born Oct. 25, 1931, in Argillite, the son of the late Lora Salyers Hensley and Ernest Hensley. He was the husband of Beulah Faye Coffee Hensley, who survives.
He was a laborer for Local 1445 of Catlettsburg and a member of Danleyton Missionary Baptist Church. He was a 32nd-degree Master Mason at Smith Lodge 775, F&AM.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Regina Franz; and two brothers, Johnny Douglas Hensley and Thurman Luther Hensley.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Timothy Russell Hensley of Argillite; and two daughters, Kimberly Hutchinson of Danleyton and Rosetta Hall of Winchester; a brother, Marvin Hensley; seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Courtney and Andrew Hutchinson, Sean Franz, Elizabeth Scaggs, Michelle Caudill and Jared Hall; and a great-grandson, Brandon Caudill.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Dr. Tom Melvin and Jimmy Thorpe. Burial will be in Whitt Cemetery in Argillite.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Michael Short - 1945-2008
Michael Eugene “Mick” Short, 63, of Olive Hill, passed away Saturday evening, Nov. 29, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born July 26, 1945, in Carter County, a son of the late Richard and Lillian Richards Short.
Mick was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him. He was a Christian and a member of Goddard United Methodist Church. He was retired from the Water Treatment Plant where he worked as an operator, was a police officer for the city of Olive Hill and a construction worker.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vivian Johnson Short; a son, Michael “Mick” Short of Olive Hill; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and Mike Kiser and Samantha McCoy all of Olive Hill; seven grandchildren, Mika Kiser, Melissa Kiser, Matthew Kiser, Madison McCoy, Memphis Webb and Macyn Cade Webb; a grandson-in-law, James Mabry; two great-grandsons, Colten Mabry and Bryson Kiser; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard Allen and Elizabeth Short and Jim and Madonna Short, all of Olive Hill, and John Lee and Nellie Short of New Castle, Ind.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and R. C. Davis, Shirley and Jack Lowe and Suzie and Donald Lambert, all of Olive Hill; and several nieces, nephews, other family members, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill by Brother Jimmy Holbrook, Brother Dwayne Johnson and Brother Robert Perry. Burial will be in Olive Hill Memorial Park in Olive Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, all day Tuesday and until services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Jack Lowe, Jim Allen Holbrook, Ricky Short, J.D. Johnson, Phillip Johnson and Scott Lambert will serve as pallbearers. Ben Stegall, Scott Sloas, Jason Johnson, William Perry, Joe Lambert, Tracy McKenzie and Bobbie Carroll will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Nicholas Nischan - 1995-2008
Nicholas Yancy Nischan, born May 22, 1995, finished his race and received his reward on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, after a 61/2-year battle with cancer.
He left this Earth while surrounded by his family at home in Grayson. Nicholas lived every day in the truth of his favorite verse, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1: 9)
Nicholas was met at the finish line by his Savior Jesus Christ and his sister, Adrienne Annabeth, as well as many other heroes of the faith who have gone home before him. He temporarily left behind his parents, Tim and Tammy Nischan; brothers Erich (21), Evan (19), Todd (15) and sister, Olivia (10), all of Grayson. Others also temporarily left behind include grandparents Dave and Elaine Clapper of Brandenburg and Richard and Ora Lee Nischan of Dallas, Texas; aunts and uncles Cy Clapper of Louisville, Steve and Brenda Remke of Tallahassee, Fla., Gary and Jennifer Rawson of Toronto, Ohio, abd Andrew and Julie Nischan of Topeka, Kan.; and cousins Ben and Thomas Remke of Tallahassee and Phillip Rawson of Toronto.
In honor of Nick and in lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations to the Nicholas Yancy Nischan Foundation be sent to First Church of Christ, 287 Pomeroy St., Grayson, KY 41143. These funds will be divided between several ministries that are special to the Nischan family. In addition, a portion of these memorial donations will be used to establish a literacy outreach program.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the First Church of Christ in Grayson and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A celebration service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the church, followed by a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements.

Rhoda O'Dell
Rhoda Frances (Jackson) O’Dell, 85, a resident of Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, a former longtime resident of Huntington, W.Va., and formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Nov. 28, 2008.
She was a native West Virginian and the daughter of Ben Jackson and Della Wallace Jackson of Buffalo, W.Va.
Frances was also preceded in death by her first husband, Karl C. Tucker Jr. of Charleston, W.Va., in 1956.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Thomas O’Dell Sr., a brother and sister-in-law, Andrew M. and Lelia S. Jackson of Harrisonburg, Va., and their children and grandchildren; John Thomas O’Dell Jr. of Point Pleasant and his sons, Christopher Lee and John Lewis; Karl Timothy Tucker (Colleen) O’Dell of New Albany, Ohio, and their daughter, Sarah Frances; Dr. Karl Andrew Tucker O’Dell of Ashland and his daughter, Megan Karli of Cincinnati and his son, William Tucker and stepdaughter, Emma Johnson and their mother, Rebecca O’Dell; Molly Jay O’Dell of Huntington; and Dr. Ben Jackson (Kathy Howard) O’Dell of Ashland and their children, Nicholas Howard, Patrick Benjamin, Alexander Thomas and Emily Katherine.
Frances was valedictorian of her Buffalo High School class and received an academic scholarship to attend William & Mary College. Over the span of her lifetime, Frances served country, state and community, including military service as an officer in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. She was an active proponent for the Boy Scouts of America. She was a certified adult literacy educator and children’s reader of Cabell County.
She was awarded the highest West Virginia civilian honor presented by Gov. Joe Manchin in 2002. This award, the West Virginia Order of the 75th Star, was presented to her for her work as a staunch victims rights advocate and spokesperson against violent crimes. She retired in 1988 from the federal government serving as a federal hearings assistant with the Social Security Office of Hearings and Appeals. Patriot, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she made a lasting impression upon all who came to know her.
She was an inspirational figure for many. She set her sights high and she expected no less from others. She lived her life centered around her children. No sacrifice was ever too great when it came to her offspring or for her country. Semper fi, Frances Jackson O’Dell.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Chapman’s Mortuary in Huntington.
Graveside service with full military honors will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Spring Hill Cemetery, Soldier’s Field in Huntington, with Dr. Mark Slaatte officiating.
The family would like to thank the staff at Oakmont Manor and Hospice of Ashland for their kindnesses.

Clevie Jordan - 1940-2008
Clevie L. McGlone Jordan, 68, of Olive Hill, died Saturday in St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
She was born June 3, 1940.
Her husband, Clyde E. Jordan, survives.
The funeral will be at at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Janet Sue Grizzell Seagraves, 62, of Grayson, died Saturday in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson.
