Lorena Mae Caudill (1924-2009)

Lorena Mae Caudill, 85, of Ashland, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.

She was born June 19, 1924, in Paintsville, Ky., the daughter of the late Martin and Clara Miller Wheeler. She was a former employee of the Ashland Area Vocational School and a member of 39th Street United Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Caudill; two sons, Martin Bruce Caudill and Randall Scott Caudill; two brothers, Charles Wheeler and Willie Wheeler; and a sister, Emma Caudill.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Tussey of Ashland; two sons, Timothy Caudill and wife Diana and Kendall Caudill, both of Ashland; three grandchildren, Lenora Caines and husband Tim, Nicholas Caudill and Chase Caudill; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Caines and Destin Caines.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

The family will receive friends after noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Caudill, Kenny Caudill, Nick Caudill, Chase Caudill, Brandon Caines, Tim Caines and Roger Wheeler.



Joan Klein (1925-2009)

Joan Klein, 84, of Georgetown, Texas, and a resident of The Meridian in Temple, Texas, and formerly of Dallas, Texas, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.

She was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Ashland, Ky., to parents Ray Arnold Wagner and Mabel (Shetts) Wagner.

Joan enjoyed sewing, crocheting, working crossword puzzles and gardening. She taught nursery school, loving each and every student. Joan never complained and always had a smile on her face.

She is survived by her niece, Nancy Kretschmer of The Woodlands, Texas; a nephew, Ray Arnold Wagner of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Ray F. Wagner and wife Mary of The Woodlands; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life was at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at The Meridian in Temple. Inurnment at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas, will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3420 Executive Drive, Suite 301, Austin, TX 78731.

Marcilla Virginia Sturm (1923-2009)

Marcilla Virginia Sturm passed away peacefully Nov. 29, 2009. She was an only child, born Feb. 17, 1923, in Pontiac, Mich., to Grace and Pearle Dobbins.

Her father passed away when she was very young. She was a devoted daughter to her mother who lived to be 98 years young. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Paul Sturm. Paul and Marcilla lived overseas in the early 1970s and were able to travel extensively. When they returned to the States, they were transferred to Denver, Colo., where they were very happy, but they were never happier than when they returned to the town they loved most, Ashland, Ky.

Marcilla loved animals and over the years provided a warm and caring home for many dogs and cats. Sammy will miss her terribly.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Karin, and husband Phil Boling of Charlotte, N.C.; and her daughter, Kathy, and husband Paul Hill of Catlettsburg, Ky.

She has seven grandchildren, Marci Kloskey (Rick) of Spartanburg, S.C.,, Mindi Gerrard (Chris) of Charlotte, Chris Boling (Carla) of Matthews, N.C., Polly Rowell (Jason) of Charlotte, Jason Hill of Columbus, Ohio, Heather Hill of Ashland and Drew Hill (Stacy) of Ellicott City, Md. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren, C.J. and Hayden Boling, Megan, Harrison and Beau Gerrard, Eliza Grace Rowell, Abigail Bond and Marly Hill.

The family of Mrs. Sturm would like to offer special thanks to Carol Ratliff, her longtime caretaker and friend, for her dedication and devotion. Thanks also to the wonderful nurses and doctors at St. Mary’s Medical Center Intermediate Care and the fifth floor neurology staff.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by the Rev. Mark A. Kloha, pastor. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Edward V. Porter (1915-2009)

Edward V. Porter, 94, of Raceland, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Porter was born Aug. 3, 1915, in South Point, Ohio, a son of the late Edgar McClure and Susan Pearl Gibson Porter. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Nichols Porter, on Oct. 31, 2009; his stepmother, Lettie Porter; three brothers, Lawrence Porter, Hershel Porter and Clyde Porter; and a sister, Lillian Porter.

He was a retired foreman for C&O Railroad after 29 years of service.

Surviving are two daughters, Christie Fannin of Ashland and Carolyn Tingler of Worthington, Ky.; two sons, Edward (Sylvia) Porter of Richmond, Ky., and Paul Vernon (Darless) Porter of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a brother, Rex Porter of Farmers, Ky.; 11 grandchildren, John Porter, David Porter, Steven Porter, Andrew Fannin, Brian Porter, Nick Fannin, Lisa Porter, Joseph McClure Tingler, Bret Porter, Anita Porter and Jimmy Porter; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland by Pastor Paul Neal. Entombment will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Ashland.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James Everett “Tom” Parsons (1943-2009)

James Everett “Tom” Parsons, 66, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born March 29, 1943, in Hitchins, Ky., a son of the late Lonnie and Stella Grizzell Parsons. He was a member of Four Mile Baptist Church and a self-employed painter.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bill Parsons.

He is survived by his wife of 271/2 years, Clotine Ison Parsons. His other survivors include a daughter, Sandy Parsons of Hitchins; a son, Kevin and wife Rhonda Parsons of Hitchins; four stepdaughters, Darlene Seagraves, Tonda and husband Gary Prater and Shelia and husband Luke Snyder, all of Grayson, and Roxann and husband Jeff Moore of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Lucy Tackett of Hitchins and Wilma and husband Charles Boggs of Olive Hill, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Larry McDavid and Wes Walker, ministers. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

William R. Plummer, 76, of South Shore, died Tuesday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Martha Wilson (1932-2009)

Martha Catherine Carroll Wilson, 77, of Olive Hill, died Tuesday at her residence.

She was born Jan. 8, 1932, in Carter County.

Her husband, Lewis Wilson, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will be in McFerren Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Columbus “Dickie” Johnson, 54, of Martin, husband of Frances Shepherd Johnson, died Monday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 17, 1955, in McDowell.

Anna Maxine Hall Brown, 82, of Morehead, died Monday in Life Care Center in Morehead.

She was born May 26, 1927.
