Hazel Church - 1915-2009

Hazel Ison Church, 94, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, following an extended illness. She was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Elliott County, Ky., to the late John Milton and Effie Mae Lillie Ison. She worked at the Clayton Lambert Shell Factory during WWII.

Hazel was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over fifty years, a past worthy Matron of the former Ashland Chapter #119 and a current member of Order of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter #144. She was a past worthy high priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem #7 of Ashland, Ky. and attended Oak Springs United Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Beachal Ray Church of Ashland; a duaghter, Darlynn Barber and her husband Phillip Jr. of Ashland; a son, Samuel Milton Church and his wife Sarah Jo “Sally” of Pittsburg, Pa.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Beachal Church, Phillip Robert Barber III, David Bryce Barber and Lisa Robin Callihan; nine great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, by Elder Mike Saunders at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Order of Eastern Star services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. today by the Worthy matron and members of Order of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter #144. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Monday.



Darlene Faye Kennedy Spillman - 1956-2009

Darlene Faye Kennedy Spillman, 53, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born June 8, 1956, in Grayson, a daughter of Doris Lawhun Kennedy of Willard, Ky., and the late Charles Kennedy. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Donna Sue Jackson.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Candice Jarvice and Michelle Spillman Parsons, both of Grayson; a sister, Karen (Don) Fraley of Grayson; a brother, Charles Douglas (Chalma) Kennedy of Mount Sterling, Ky.; and grandchildren, Brent Parsons and Ashley Parsons.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Scott Whaley and Ben James officiating. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.

David “DL” McDavid - 1926-2009

David “DL” McDavid, 83, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord on Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 2009, following a short illness.

David was born April 8th, 1926, in Willard, Ky., a son of the late Luther McDavid and Laura Dobbins McDavid.

He retired as a U.S. Government Soil Conservationist, served as a Grayson Fire Chief, was a former Carter County Magistrate, an auctioneer, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the First Church of Christ in Grayson.

His wife, Betty Thomas McDavid, preceded him in death. Also preceding in death are four sisters, Dorothy Griffith Gertrude Porter, Ruby Wallace and Eula Mae McDavid; and a brother, Elva McDavid.

He is survived by a brother, Walter (Thelma) McDavid of Grayson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Precious, who he lolved dearly.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Tim Nischan. Burial will be at the East Carter County Memory Gardens in Grayson.

Friends may call today from 5 to 9 p.m. and Monday after 9 a.m. at the funeral home.



Gladys I. Nordhoff - 1918-2009

Gladys I. Nordhoff, 91, of Ashland, formerly of Buffalo, N.Y., died Thursday in the Community Hospice Care Center. She was born April 2, 1918, in Buffalo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Nordhoff.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elmlawn Cemetery in Buffalo. Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Claude Thomas Cantrell

Claude Thomas Cantrell, 73, of Oil Springs, died Saturday.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and at 9 a.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home.



Meredith Fultz Messer - 1937-2009

Meredith Fultz Messer, 72, of Morehead, died Friday in U.K. Medical Center in Lexington. She was born Sept. 21, 1937. Her husband, Billy Messer, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Fultz Cemetery.

Elizabeth Smallwood - 1918-2009

Elizabeth Smallwood, 91, of Louisa, died Thursday in Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa. She was born Feb. 27, 1918. Her husband, Edgar Smallwood, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. at Louisa United Methodist Church in Louisa. Burial will be in Cunningham Cemetery in St. Albans, W.Va.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home in Louisa.

Deborah Bernice Conley - 1956-2009

Deborah Bernice Conley, 53, of Paintsville, died Thursday in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. She was born Aug. 5, 1956 in Johnson County.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at New Bethel Free WIll Baptist Church in Riceville. Burial will be in Hannah Family Cemetery, Route 825, in Swamp Branch.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Sunday at the church.



Howard Stewart - 1923-2009

Howard Stewart, 86, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Meloneton, Ky., died Sunday. He was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Fullerton, Ky.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Winters Stewart.

Burial was in Melbourne, Fla.



Don M. Virgin - 1923-2009

Don M. Virgin, 85, of Greenup, died Saturday in Wurtland Nursing and Rehab. He was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Peach Creek, W.Va. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lorene Scott Virgin.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial will be in the Virgin Cemetery in Argillite.

Ricky Dale Thompson

Ricky Dale Thompson, 63, of McDonald, Tenn., died Oct. 18 at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Karen Ras Thompson.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Collier Memorial Gardens Cemetery in South Portsmouth, Ky. There will be military graveside services by a detachment from Ft. Knox.

Clarence Bowling - 1926-2009

Clarence Bowling, 83, of Olice Hill, died Friday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. He was born Oct. 11, 1926. His wife, Hazel Williams Bowling, survives.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery.

Clifford Cooper

Clifford Cooper, 65, of Grayson, died Saturday in Ashland Community Hospice Center.

Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



James “Zeek” Pons - 1942-2009

James Willie “Zeek” Pons, 66, of Ironton, died Tuesday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born Oct. 26, 1942.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Brown Funeral Chapel in Ironton. Burial will be in Hecla Cemetery with military graveside rites by VFW Post 8850 of Ironton.

Friends may call from 8 to 10 p.m. Monday and from noon until time of service on Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Donations may be made to the funeral chapel to help with final expenses.



Joanna Dee Staley - 1930-2009

Joanna Dee Staley, 79, of Kitts Hill, died Thursday at her residence. She was born July 20, 1930, in Coal Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband James D. Staley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Ironton. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton.
