Hazel Church - 1915-2009
Hazel Ison Church, 94, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, following an extended illness.
Hazel was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Elliott County, Ky., to the late John Milton and Effie Mae Lillie Ison.
She worked at the Clayton Lambert Shell Factory during WWII. Hazel was a fifty plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star, a past worthy matron of the former Ashland Chapter 119 and a current member of Order of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter 144. She was a past worthy high priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem 7 of Ashland and attended Oak Springs United Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Beachal Ray Church of Ashland; a daughter, Darlynn Barber and her husband Phillip Jr. of Ashland; a son, Samuel Milton Church and his wife, Sarah Jo “Sally” of Pittsburgh, Pa.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Beachal Church, Phillip Robert Barber III, David Bryce Barber and Lisa Robin Callihan; nine great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Elder Mike Saunders. Order of Eastern Star services will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday by the worthy matron and members of Order of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter 144. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Monday.
Darlene Faye Kennedy Spillman - 1956-2009
Darlene Faye Kennedy Spillman, 53, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born June 8, 1956, in Grayson, a daughter of Doris Lawhorn of Willard, Ky., and the late Charles Kennedy. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Donna Sue Jackson.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Candice Jarvis and Michelle Spillman Parsons, both of Grayson; one sister, Karen (Don) Fraley of Grayson; one brother, Charles Douglas (Chalma) Kennedy of Mount Sterling, Ky.; and grandchildren, Brent Parsons and Ashley Parsons.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Scott Whaley and Ben James officiating. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ricky Thompson
Ricky Dale Thompson, 63, of McDonald, Tenn., formerly of Ashland, died Oct. 18 at his residence.
Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.
Wanda Erwin
Wanda Mae Erwin, 66, of Grayson, died Thursday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was the wife of Gary Erwin.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery.

Arnold “Andy” Carter - 1940-2009
Arnold “Andy” Robert Carter, 69, of Grayson, died Friday in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Ashland.
He was born June 28, 1940, in Carter County.
His wife, Loella Brainard Carter, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Burial will be in Carter Cemetery.

William Hamilton
William Fred Hamilton, 78, died Thursday in Mount Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
His wife, Alma Bivens Hamilton, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Waring Cemetery in Garrison with military rites by Monte Lewis Stamm VFW Post 5438 in Vanceburg.
Friends may call two hours before the service Monday at the funeral home.
Dora Lewis
Dora Margaret Lewis, 57, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Johnson County, died Wednesday in Ohio.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Paintsville Funeral Home. Burial will be in Kimbleton Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Elizabeth Smallwood - 1918-2009
Elizabeth Smallwood, 91, of Louisa, died Thursday in Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa.
She was born Feb. 27, 1918.
Her husband, Edgar Smallwood, died in 2000.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Louisa United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cunningham Cemetery in St. Albans, W.Va.

Janet Butler - 1937-2009
Janet Lee Butler, 71, of Coal Grove, died Friday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born Dec. 22, 1937, in Lawrence County.
Her husband, Larry Keith Butler, died in 1995.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
