Frances Gallaher Bailey (1923-2009)

Frances Gallaher Bailey, 86, of Winchester, Ky., formerly of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, in Lexington Country Place in Lexington, Ky.

She was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Ted and Josephine Soligic Gallaher. She was a former employee of Stecklers Clothing Store and a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Myron Dale Bailey; a grandson, Evan Joseph Waters; a sister, Evelyn Troutman; and a brother, William “Willie” Gallaher.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Waters and her husband, Frank, of Winchester; a brother, Ted Gallaher of Ashland; a grandson, Dale Waters of Winchester; and a nephew, Mark Gallaher of Seattle, Wash.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. B. Dinsmore Nisbet. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

The family will receive friends after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Rose Mary Brooks Place, 200 Rose Mary Drive, Winchester, KY 40391.



Susan Lynn Douglas Hahn (1956-2009)

Susan Lynn Douglas Hahn, 53, of Ashland, Ky., died Oct. 12, 2009, in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

She was born May 23, 1956, in Morgantown, W.Va., a daughter of Charles Lee and Bonnie Hauser Douglas of Ashland.

Additional survivors include a son, Michael Hahn of Ashland; a brother, Charles L. Douglas Jr. and wife Betty of Russell, Ky.; and nephews Chase and Ryan Douglas.

She was employed by the Robert C. Byrd Institute, Paramount Arts Center, Adelphia and Armstrong Cable during which time she wrote for the Huntington Quarterly, Bridges and Marshall magazines. She also did work for numerous nonprofit organizations. She left work to care for her father who was afflicted with Alzheimer’s, which she was later diagnosed with herself. She was a loving daughter, a devoted mother and a caring friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was a graduate of Russell High School, attended the University of Kentucky, graduated from Centre College and later received a master’s degree in journalism from Marshall University.

There will be no funeral.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. Interment will be in Aurora, W.Va., at a later date.

Albert Franklin Riggs Sr. (1937-2009)

Albert Franklin Riggs Sr., born March 30, 1937, died of a massive coronary on Friday, Oct. 8, 2009, in New Bern, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene Jarrell Riggs and Ernest Jennings Riggs Sr., and a son, Matthew Karrer Riggs, who died in 1990.

He is survived by his former wife, Ann Elliott Ball Riggs, and children Elizabeth Riggs Kramer (Stephen), Albert F. Riggs Jr. (Cynthia), Mark D. Riggs (Cheryl) and Robin Heather Riggs. Grandchildren are Davis Kramer, Stephen Kramer, Austin Riggs, Jack Riggs and Rachel Riggs and a stepgrandson, Kevin Bowman.

Raised in Russell, Ky., Al was the youngest of nine children, all of whom preceded him in death, Helen Riggs Tremaine, Ernest Jennings Riggs Jr., Kathern Riggs Jacks, Olive Riggs Marcum, Gladys Pauline Riggs Perkins, Margaret Riggs Carter, Doris Riggs Springer and Donald Riggs.

A lifelong broadcasting professional, Al Riggs began his career as a radio announcer for WIRO in Ironton, Ohio, and WRFD in Columbus, Ohio, before moving to television advertising for WJW-TV in Cleveland, Ohio, WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, WIIC-TV in Pittsburgh, WITN-TV in Washington, N.C., and other stations in Chicago and Springfield, Mo. He moved to Trenton, N.C., in 1992 where he founded a television advertising agency called ARMedia before retiring in 2002.

Al was known most for the love of his family, education, basketball and commitment to community service. His biggest life passion was writing. A published poet, he recently took first place in the Kentucky State Poets Society for his epic poem, “Missouri Blue Norther.”

A Free Mason in Blendon, Ohio, and Trenton, N.C., Al was also active in Rotary Club International, Kiwanis, Aladdin Shrine Temple and Reading Services for the Blind. He served on the Avonworth School Board (Pittsburgh) and as commissioner in the town of Trenton. He was a member of numerous writing organizations and the Appalachian Shawnee Tribe. He was very active in Trenton United Methodist Church.

A service was Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Trenton United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, Ohio, with Pastor Paul Wright officiating. Interment will be in Blendon Central Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2009, and an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.

Donna Bailey (1927-2009)

Donna J. Bailey, 81, of Ashland, died Monday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Dec. 19, 1927, in Warsaw, Ind.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pinnington-McComb Funeral Home in Auburn, Ind.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Pinnington-McComb Funeral Home.

Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood is in charge of local arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Marquerite Harmon

Marquerite Webb Harmon, 85, of Hueysville, widow of Herman D. “Doc” Harmon, died Sunday at her residence.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wayland Historical Society.



Chester “Riverrat” Sammons

Chester “Riverrat” Sammons, 53, of Wittensville, husband of Barbara Ann Slone Sammons, died Tuesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Rice-Sammons Cemetery in Blue River.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Rettie Kendrick (1921-2009)

Rettie Thacker Kendrick, 88, died Wednesday.

She was born July 30, 1921.

Her husband, Monroe Kendrick, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chloe Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. Burial will be in Kendrick Family Cemetery.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and all day Friday at Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville.



Estill “Sonny” Spencer (1934-2009)

Estill Clifton “Sonny” Spencer, 74, of Elliott County, died Tuesday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Logan, W.Va.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Shirley Thacker

Shirley Jeanette Thacker, 75, of Millard, died Wednesday at her residence.

Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.
