Ernest Wade Garvin (1944-2008)
Ernest Wade Garvin, 64, of Ashland, is in the arms of the angels today following his passing Monday after an extended battle with cancer.
An avid lover of the Appalachian Mountains that form the Canaan Valley, he was a dedicated husband, father and Christian.
He was raised in a simple family that cherished hard work, honesty and love, traits that endeared him through life to all who he met. He had a thirst for knowledge throughout his life beyond his days at Wurtland High School and Morehead State University, frequently studying new trades as he made a career at Armco Steel, formerly Semet Solvay, for more than 30 years before retiring and dabbling in real estate with ERA Hensley.
However, his true passion was his church and enjoying time with his family.
Wade helped Mavity Freewill Baptist Church grow into its new chapel on Ky. 3 in Cannonsburg and spearheaded a fundraising drive to secure a steeple for the parish, where he also taught Sunday School for a time. He previously attended Ashland Holiness Tabernacle on Moore Street, where he also molded the lives of his youth class.
Although time in church was always spent with family at his side, they did not go wanting outside of God’s house. He loved the outdoors, be it raising tobacco on his parents’ farm in Danleyton or riding horses or four-wheelers with his grandchildren or foster children. If he couldn’t be outside, he was always up for a game of Scrabble, pool or his other favorite love: music.
Wade loved the guitar and spent countless hours picking Johnny Cash’s “Tennessee Flat Top Box” to put his weary children to sleep in his younger days, and could always be heard belting out a country song or hymn no matter his locale or audience — and usually off-tune — but the words always came from the bottom of his heart.
That same heart belonged to his wife, Vickie, whom he adored. They were married in March of 1996 and spent their years together happy and content in caring for their families. His one regret was not having more time to spend with her.
Wade was born Oct. 10, 1944, to Bruce and Sarah Garvin of Danleyton, the second of eight children. He always longed for a large family of his own, having four children and fostering many others.
Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Todd Garvin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three daughters, Lisa Wiler and husband Jerry of Catlettsburg, Stacey Stevens and husband Jon of Ashland and Tiffany Kirk and husband Austin of Durbin; three stepchildren who he loved as his own, Sherry Fannin and husband Rick of Catlettsburg, Mary Fannin and husband Boyd of Ashland and Robert “Bobby” Ferrell and wife Michelle of Ashland. His pride and joy were his grandchildren: Chase Wiler, Jessica Fannin, Baylee Wiler, Presley Wiler, Luke Kirk, Jenna Fannin, Havanna Kirk, Jonathon “Jonny Wade” Stevens, Mackenzie Fannin, Evan Fannin, Gavin Ferrell and Cameryn Ferrell.
He is also survived by four brothers, Larry Garvin and wife Alene of Danleyton, Bruce Michael Garvin and wife Connie of Westwood, Danny Garvin and wife Pam of South Shore and Tommy Garvin and wife Ernie of Catlettsburg; three sisters, Mary Lou Kiser and husband Frank of Danleyton, Polly Boyd and husband David of Flatwoods and Anita Deerfield and husband Shannon of Greenup; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A church service celebrating Wade’s life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mavity Freewill Baptist Church on the left past the Flying J on Ky. 3 with the Revs. Larry Garvin and Mike Gullett speaking. Burial will be in the “Strawberry Patch,” one of Wade’s favorite places on his parents’ farm.
