Charlie Clark - 1931-2008

Charlie Calvin Clark, 77, of Ashland, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born in Bland County, Va., on March 25, 1931, and was the son of the late Wylie Preston and Belva Myers Clark. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Opal Lee Blankenship Clark; a brother, Clarence Clark; and a sister, Georgie Hamilton.

A veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, he retired from Betsy Ross Bakery in Ashland with 30 years of service. He was a faithful member of Cannonsburg Church of Christ and loved fishing and traveling. But most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by a son, Charlie Clark, and wife Jeannie of Catlettsburg; two daughters, Wanda Burgess and Teresa McCoy and husband Phil, all of Ashland; six grandchildren, Andy Clark and wife Sabrina, Nikki Clark, Michelle Hampton and husband Nathan, Amanda Dawson, Chris Dawson and Misty Lilly; 10 great-grandchildren, Kyleigh Butler, Dakota Hampton, Alivia Evans, Camryn Dawson, Presli Clark, Shelbi McClurg, Jacob Gillet, Ariel Hampton, Clayton Hampton and Peyton Lilly; a foster daughter, Chee Chee Fletcher and husband Jimmy of Rocky Gap, Va.; and a sister, Margie Nelson of Rocky Gap.

Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, October 14, 2008, in the chapel of Riffe Funeral Service in Narrows, Va., by the Rev. John Repass. Burial will be in Shrader Cemetery at Niday in Bland County.

The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Service from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Jack Simpson - 1927-2008

Jack S. Simpson, 80, of Ashland, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 25, 1927, in Ashland, the son of the late Percy H. and Myrtle Leape Simpson. He was a retired engineer at CSX Railroad with 44 years of service. He was a member of Poage Masonic Lodge 325, F&AM, for 49 years. He was a World War II veteran with the Army Air Force and a Kentucky colonel. He attended Faith Independent Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Mae Rzeczkowski and Thelma Schorman; and five brothers, Earl Ray Simpson, Paul Simpson, Robert Simpson, Charles Simpson and James Simpson.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anna Belle Barnett Simpson; a daughter, Jacqueline Patrick and her husband, Richard, of Ashland; a son, Michael Simpson and his wife, Karen, of Ashland; a brother, Donald Simpson of Ashland; three grandchildren, Tiffani Johnson, Mick Brown and Richard Patrick II; and five great-grandchildren, Riley Johnson, Sophia Johnson, Zachary Brown, Jacob Brown and Taylor Donahue.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by ministers Edgel Whitt and Larry Mullins. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic service by Poage Masonic Lodge at 7 p.m. and a military service on Tuesday by Kenova American Legion Post 93.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.



Myrtle Price - 1938-2008

Myrtle Waugh Campbell Ralph Price, 70, of Catlettsburg, stood in the presence of her Savior after her passing on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington.

She was born Aug. 14, 1938, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Charles E. Waugh Sr. and Anna Katherine Pennington Waugh.

Also preceding her in death were her first husband, Billy Lee Campbell, and her second husband, William C. Ralph. She was a former secretary with Meade Construction Co. and a member of Second Freewill Baptist Church of Ashland. Myrtle’s love of singing with the Waugh family brought joy to all who heard her.

Sadly left behind is a loving family: her husband of 11 years, Earl Price; a son, Chuck (Janet) Price of South Carolina; six daughters, Candy Gibson of Ashland, Rebecca Quick of Perris, Calif., Nancy Campbell of Catlettsburg, Stephanie Ralph of Ashland, Anita (Kelley) Thacker of China Grove, N.C., and Teresa (Don) Lunsford of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; eight sisters, Lillian Sue Beckett of Huntington, Kathy Field of Raleigh, N.C., Norene Skaggs of Kenova, Elizabeth Baker of Catlettsburg, Carol Ball of Flatwoods, Linda Craig of Ashland, Marie Daniels of Greenup and Marilyn Smith of Catlettsburg; three brothers, Charles E. Waugh Jr. of Winchester, David Waugh of Catlettsburg and Daniel Waugh of Ashland; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service in remembrance of Myrtle will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Jeff Evans will offer a message of comfort and inspiration with special music by the Waugh family. Final rest to be in Catlettsburg Cemetery.

Those wishing to call on the Price family may do so from 6 to 9 p.m. today and one before services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Eleanor T. Johnson - 1921-2008

Eleanor T. Johnson, 86, formerly of Russell, died Aug. 4, 2008, in Madisonville, Ky.

In 2003, Eleanor moved to western Kentucky to be near her son, Taylor.

Born Aug. 22, 1921, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was a graduate of West Virginia State College and later Marshall University, with additional course work at Morehead College. Mrs. E. Johnson taught many years in the elementary schools of Cross Lanes, W.Va., and then Russell, Ky. She was a member of Mead Memorial United Methodist Church in Russell. She was an avid bridge player and an honorary Kentucky colonel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar B. and Mary C. Taylor; three brothers; and her husband of more than 40 years, Richard E. Johnson.

Survivors include a son, William R. and his wife, Suzann S. Johnson, of Moore, S.C.; a son, J. Taylor and his wife, Jacquelin L. Johnson, of Madisonville, Ky.; and a son, Jeffrey B. Johnson and daughter Marianne C. and her husband, Theodore A. Harden, of Middletown, N.Y.

Mrs. Johnson is also survived by grandchildren Matthew Johnson, Claire Johnson, Laura Jenkins, Terry Harden and Theodore B. Harden; plus great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Johnson’s ashes will be interred during a graveside ceremony at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008. Pastor Raymond Payne will officiate. A reception will follow at Mead Memorial United Methodist Church.



Priscilla Hurn - 1926-2008

Priscilla Alexander Hurn, 82, of Chattanooga, Tenn., a former resident of Raceland, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

She was born April 9, 1926, in Raceland, a daughter of the late George Washington Alexander and Rosi Bentley Alexander. She was a homemaker and a member of the South Shore Old Regular Baptist Church in South Shore.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Eugene Hurn, on Aug. 21, 1987; three brothers, Tom Alexander, Ralph Alexander and Cecil Alexander; and four sisters, Carrie Adams, Alta Martin, Ollie Alexander and Lorraine Alexander.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara S. “David” Edmondson of Chattanooga, Sylvia Morrison of Raceland, Martha Mays of Worthington and Jo Ann Cassell of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two sons and their wives, Ralph “Ada” Hurn of Ashland and Edward “Laverne” Hurn of Westwood; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Abundant Life United Pentecostal Church in Raceland by the Rev. Anthony Keaton. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Services are under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.



Irven Burchwell - 1925-2008

Irven Burchwell, 83, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods.

Mr. Burchwell was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Danleyton, a son of the late Albert and Dova Rowe Burchwell.

He was retired from the T&L Department at Armco Steel. He attended Plum Grove Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he participated in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands from 19 February 1945 to 16 March 1945, with honorable service from September 1943 through May 1946. He was a Kentucky colonel and an avid woodworker.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Emmajane Burchwell, and two brothers, Charles Burchwell and Jim Burchwell.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wanda Baldridge Burchwell; a son, Mike (Pamela Gamble) Burchwell of Winfield, W.Va.; two daughters, Connie (Jim) Royster and Pam (Steve) Melvin, both of Greenup; two brothers, Raymond Burchwell of Greenup and Paul Curtis Burchwell of Flatwoods; five sisters, Louise Grizzle of Lexington, Pauline Stapleton of Naples, Sylvia DeHart of Canton, Ohio, Bessie Fields of Ashland and Nancy Bryant of Flatwoods; four grandchildren, Tony (Taylor) Douglas of Lexington, David Douglas of Georgetown and Tara (J.P.) Gallion and Scott Melvin, both of Greenup; and three great-grandchildren, Parker Gallion, Skylar Gallion and Laykin Gallion.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Rob Jordan, minister. Burial will be in Plum Grove Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.



Amanda Jaynes

Amanda Tyree Jaynes, 93, a resident of the Chapel House in Grayson, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was the daughter of the late Gaines and Rena Reliford Tyree and was a member of Olive Hill United Methodist Church.

She also was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Raymond S. Jaynes; a daughter, Peggy Jaynes Duvall Kiser; two sisters, Evelyn Tyree Jaynes and Geneva Tyree James; and two brothers, Earl Tyree and Crawford Tyree.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty (John) Jaynes McDavid; two granddaughters, Joan (Fred) Duvall Burton and Mary Francis Kiser (Steve) Shaffer; a grandson, John Steven (Lisa) McDavid; four great-grandchildren, Patrick Burton, Halley and Matthew Shaffer and Erin McDavid; and two great-great-grandchildren, Reid Tyree and Rylee Jane Burton.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Bob Burton. Burial will be in Jr. OUAM Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Cobbie Lee - 1921-2008

Cobbie Lee, 88, of Ceredo, W.Va., formerly of Catlettsburg, died Saturday in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.



Orville Swinford

Orville Swinford, 88, of Grayson, died Sunday in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson.



Jewel McKenzie - 1924-2008

Jewel McKenzie, 84, of North Middletown, formerly of West Liberty, died Sunday.

She was born Feb. 22, 1924.

Her husband, Earnest McKenzie, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Salyer Cemetery in West Liberty.

Juanita Collinsworth Oney, 87, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of West Liberty, died Friday at her residence.

Franklin Boyle - 1937-2008

Franklin D. Boyle, 71, of South Point, died Friday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born Jan. 15, 1937.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ironton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Coal Grove.

Family and friends will gather at the Knights of Columbus in Ironton after the funeral.
