Roger Broughton - 1939-2008
Roger Broughton, 69, of Ashland died Friday at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born Sept. 4, 1939, in Ashland, the son of the late William Henry and Mary Elizabeth Loar Broughton.
He married his loving wife, Sally Morrow Broughton of Ashland, on Oct. 19, 1958, at the Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelly McGraw officiating. He was a 1957 graduate of Ashland High School and was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee, van driver, was in the choir and was coordinator for the Meals on Wheels program. He was an avid gardner who enjoyed camping with family and friends. He was retired from Armco Roundhouse after 38 years of service; and was a veteran of the National Guard, where he was a member of the National Guard Band.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, Gene Broughton, and one grandson, Chris Jaros.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons and their wives, Roger Allen and Cindy Broughton and Ronald Gene and Deborah Broughton, all of Ashland; one daughter, Robin Broughton of Ashland; two brothers and their wives, Larry and Winnie Broughton and Gordon and Barbara Broughton, all of Ashland; three grandchildren, Chad Broughton, Mary Beth Folmer and Jason Sturgeon.; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, with the Revs. Jim Nichols and David Brainard officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Robert Hall - 1955-2008
Robert M. “Bob” Hall, 53, of Patriot, Ohio, former Ironville resident, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Hall was born Jan. 22, 1955, in Ashland, a son of the late James Mitchell and Hazel Williams Hall. He attended Guiding Hand and Galco Schools, where he was a long distance runner, played basketball, softball and bowled. Robert enthusiastically participated in the special Olympics for 12 years, and was a member of the Straight Creek Nazarene Church. The things he enjoyed most were singing in church, riding with Terence on his motorcycle, and playing with his dog Yona, who was by his side at the time of his death.
Surviving are two sisters, Glenna Hopkins, her husband Terence, with whom he made his home, of Patriot, Ohio, Shirley Frasher, of Gallipolis, Ohio; four brothers, Keith B. Hall, his wife Nancy, James Hall, his wife Debra, John C. Smith, his wife Donna, all of Ashland, Ky., Charles E. Smith, his wife Jennifer, of Lancaster, Ohio; brother-in-law, James Colt; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death is a sister, Marilyn Colt.
A funeral service for Mr. Hall will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. A message of comfort will be offered by Bro. Carl Ross.
Committal service to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park Chapel in Ashland, Ky.

Ersel Shelton - 1915-2008
Ersel S. Shelton, 93, of Russell went to be with his Lord on Oct. 10, 2008, from Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
A native of Elliott County, he was born Aug. 21, 1915, to the late Charles H. and Nora Brown Shelton. He was a graduate of Morehead State University and taught school in Elliott County for two years. He was a retired office manager with Kentucky State Revenue Cabinet in the Lexington office.
Ersel was a World War II veteran, having proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a member of Hepburn Masonic Lodge 576 F&AM in Elliott County for over 60 years; a member of Indra Consistory Valley of Covington Scottish Rite Bodies, and a member of El Hasa Shrine. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved and took pride in his garden, and was best known for his large, delicious tomatoes.
In addition to his parents, Ersel was preceded in death by his only brother, Jesse, at age 45.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gladys Holbrook Shelton of Russell; a sister, Jo Ann (June) Dickerson of Sandy Hook; a brother, Eugene Pennington of St. Leonard, MD; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Fairview Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Rice. Burial will follow in Elliott County Memory Gardens in Sandy Hook.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday at the Church.

J.B. Jackson - 1921-2008
J.B. Jackson, 87, of Louisville, formerly of Raceland, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, in Louisville.
He was born May 12, 1921, in Hallsboro, N.C., a son of the late Warren and Vida Potter Jackson. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Helmintoller Jackson. He was a retired air conditioner and Heating supervisor for King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Ashland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in World War II and he was awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Nancy and Charles Adkins of Louisville; one son and his wife, Joe and Paula Jackson of Ashland; one brother, Graham Jackson of Lumberton, N.C.; four grandchildren, Carl Jackson, Amber Porter, Chris Jackson and Ryan Adkins; and six great-grandchildren, Jake, Davy, Delany, Marshall, Macy and Alisha.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, with the Rev. Charles Shields officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Scofield Davis - 1935-2008
Scofield Davis, 72, of Lowmansville went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008. He was born Nov. 3, 1935, in Ulysses, the son of the late Burns and Okie Young Davis. He was a farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sisters, Barbara Cundiff, Helen Schmid and Patsy Black, all of Columbus, Ohio and Betty Crana of Naples, Fla.; two brothers, Curtis Davis of Springfield, Ohio and Willis Davis of Louisa; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jimmy Vanhoose and Jimmy Bevins officiating. Burial will be in Young Cemetery in Lowmansville.

Josephine Osborn - 1923-2008
Josephine Hill Osborn, 84, of Louisa, formerly of Jackson, Ky., passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center.
She was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Morgan County, the daughter of the late Marvin and Peggy Dorton Hill. She was the wife of the late Raymond Harold Osborn, who died in 2006. She was a retired florist and was a member of the Jackson First Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her sister, Guinola Burton of Louisa; a brother-in-law, Carl Rice of Dayton; nieces and nephews, John and Joyce Burton, Jack and Lou Hill, Joe Burton, Jim and Lisa Derringer, David and Fran Rice and Tim and Linda Lawson.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home with the Revs. Arthur Ashcraft and Tammy Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa.

Raymond Harold Leach, 75, of Olive Hill died Saturday at his home.
He was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Jefferson County.

Frank McKenzie - 1911-2008
Frank McKenzie, 97, of Louisa died Friday at the J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center.
He was born March 10, 1911, in Johnson County.

Julian Estrada Gonzalez Jr., 60, of Vanceburg died Friday at Pike County Hospital. He was born April 12, 1948, in Mexico.
His wife, Gloria Jean Casto Gonzalez, survives.

Garland Shortridge Jr., 61, of Louisa died Friday at his home.
He was born May 2, 1947, in Lawrence County, Ky.

Eva Geraldine Campbell Decker, 86, of Morehead died Friday at Pine Meadows Health Care in Lexington.
She was born Oct. 18, 1921.
Her husband, Robert Decker, preceded her in death.

Clark C. Phipps - 1944-2008
Clark C. Phipps, 64, of Grassy Creek, KY, passed away Friday at his home.
He was born, Aug. 29, 1944, in Morgan Co., Ky.

Joseph L. “Big Joe” Hudson, 47, of Kitts Hill died Thursday at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
He was born March 20, 1961, in Biloxi, Miss., a son of George Hudson and Deanna Mayo Hudson of Kitts Hill.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Chapel, 204 Vernon Street, Ironton. Burial will be in Fradd Cemetery.

Her husbands, Frank Epling and Walter Lewis, preceded her in death.
