Avery Wilson Jr. - 1928-2008

Avery Wilson Jr., 79, of Roswell, N.M., formerly of Ashland, Ky., passed away Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2008, in Casa Maria Nursing Home in Roswell.

He was born Oct. 23, 1928, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Avery Sr. and Jenny Ellison Wilson.

Avery, also known as Bill or Uncle Jr. to his many nieces and nephews, served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 through 1951. He loved music, playing banjo and writing songs with the Kentucky Travelers.

Avery was a Christian and worked in numerous churches throughout the community. In 1967, he moved his family to Farmington, N.M., to begin what later became his life-long mission, which was to work in the Navajo Reservation to bring the word of God to the Native Americans. His love and compassion for the Navajo and Zuni tribes led him to build three churches, Red Rock Church of God, Valley View Church of God and Pine Springs Church of God, which continue to spread the gospel today.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Carl David Wilson; two brothers, Woodrow Wilson and Ralph Wilson; and twin sisters, Mearl Ferguson and Pearl Clark.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Esther Spence Wilson; two daughters and a son-in-law, Corrina Kay Wilson and Jennifer Ann and Michael W. Corn, both of Roswell; nine grandchildren, Jessica Corn, Jenny Dru Corn and Bronson Avery Corn and his wife, Barbara, all of Roswell, Carl David Wilson Jr., Megan Wilson and Felisha Wilson, all of Indiana, Mariah Ortiz and Tiffany Ortiz of Albuquerque, N.M., and Travis Avery Wilson of California; five great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, John D. and Elanor Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine and Jim Dalton of Ashland, Ky., and Marie and Ernest Jordan of Morehead, Ky. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Ky., by Brother David Rayburn.

Burial will be in Bowen Chapel Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday and until services Sunday at the funeral home.

Lane Cook, Dallas Wilson, Talmage Rayburn, Bronson Avery Corn, Michael W. Corn and Carl David Wilson Jr. will serve as pallbearers.



Anne Meinhart Morris - 1921-2008

Anne Meinhart Morris, 87, of Ashland, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Ashland, Ky., the daughter of the late Roy and Elizabeth Scherer Meinhart. She was a lifelong member of Holy Family Catholic Church and graduated valedictorian of Holy Family High School in 1939. She was a former employee of Ashland Oil Inc. and the C.H. Parsons Co.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Orville J. Morris; a sister, Mary Evick; and a brother, Roy Meinhart.

Survivors include three daughters, Jo Ann (Ben) Fister of Lexington, Ky., Elizabeth Ellen Morris of Ashland and Catherine Mary (Bob) Hensley of Lexington; two sons, James O. (Teresa) Morris of Dublin, Ohio, and Thomas Anthony (Bonnie) Morris of Portsmouth, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Eric (Brandi) Fister, Angela (Bryan) Elser, Adam Fister, Christine Shope, Tony Morris, Teresa Morris, Steven Morris, Kevin Morris, Michael Morris and David Morrison; four great-granddaughters, Abbi Fister, Dorey Morris, Audrey Elser and Victoria Ann Morris-Mays; and many nieces and nephews and three beloved cats.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at Holy Family Catholic Church by the Rev. John Noe. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Anne was a loving mother and grandmother who was dearly cherished by all her family and will be sadly missed.

Jean Calhoun Young - 1927-2008

Jean Calhoun Young, 80, of Ashland, Ky., died Oct. 9, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mrs. Young was born Oct. 11, 1927, in Hitchins, Ky., a daughter of the late Lawrence and Maude Shuff Calhoun.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Dempsey; brothers Max Calhoun, Chandos Calhoun, Lawrence D. Calhoun and Glen Dale Calhoun; and a sister, Helen Margaret Calhoun.

She was a homemaker and an active member of First Baptist Church of Ashland for more than 50 years, where she was in charge of the nursery and Crisis Closet and taught the 4- and 5-year-olds Sunday school class.

Surviving are her husband, Webb Young of Ashland; a son, Conard E. Young and wife Geraldine of Winchester, Ky.; a daughter, Darlene Ross and husband Jim of Savannah, Ga.; a brother, Bill Calhoun of Lexington, Ky.; sisters Leone James of St. Charles, Ill., and Joy Nolan of Grayson, Ky.; grandchildren Denise Gerkens, Janelle Hummel, Tyler Dempsey, Clarke Dempsey, Justin Ross, Courtney Ross and Taylor Ross; and great-grandchildren Kayla Gerkens, Hayley Hummel, Holly Hummel, Natalie Anderson, Andrew Hummel and Trevor Webb Dempsey.

Special thanks is given to her caregiver, Sharon Foster.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Bill Messer and Dr. Harold Moore. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at the funeral home.

Wannetta L. Bryan - 1954-2008

Wannetta L. Bryan, 54, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Oct. 8, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Oct. 7, 1954, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of Chester Cecil Bryan of East Palatka, Fla., and Evelyn Corbin Felty of Ironton, Ohio.

She was manager of Katie’s Corner and attended New Beginning Church in Chesapeake, Ohio.

Additional survivors include her fiancé, Rondall Sammons of Flatwoods; sons Jerry Lynn Vanhorn Jr. and Jeromy Lee Vanhorn, both of Flatwoods; brothers Steve Bryan of Wurtland, Ky., and Clarence Felty Jr. of Ironton; sisters Daphanie Bryan of Ironton, Carla Anderson of Morehead, Ky., and Wilma Jean Virgin of Oldtown, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jo Fannin.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 10 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Brother David McGranahan. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. at the funeral home.



Donald Ewing Conn - 1936-2008

Donald Ewing Conn, 72, of Mocabee Creek Road, Olive Hill, Ky., was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday night, Oct. 8, 2008, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky.

He was born March 10, 1936, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late Allen and Etta Shumate Conn.

Donald was a Christian and a member and assistant pastor of the Soldier Church of God. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Anton; two brothers, Clyde Conn and Harold Conn; and a sister, Phyllis Catron.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Maxine Mocabee Conn; three daughters and four sons-in-law, Karen and David Wyatt of Akron, Ohio, Pamela and Paul Parsons of Lucas, Ohio, Hope and Shannon Bradshaw of Mansfield, Ohio, and Duane Anton of Hartselle, Ala.; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Aliene and Elmer Royce of Newton Falls, Ohio, Elizabeth Hugh of Indiana and Austin Catron of Olive Hill; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Conn of West Harrison, Ind., and Connie Conn of Mansfield, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill by Brother Byron Hargett and Brother Gayle Price. Burial will be in Manning Chapel Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, all day Saturday and until services Sunday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.



Sullivan “Butch” Runion

Sullivan “Butch” Runion, 64, died Wednesday in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital in Mansfield, Ohio.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors in Mansfield and after noon Sunday at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made to the family.



Faye Hammond - 1930-2008

Faye Alice Hammond, 78, of Louisa, died Wednesday in Louisa.

She was born May 14, 1930, in Louisa.

Her husband, Charles Edward Hammond, died in 2002.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Friendship United Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hammond Cemetery at Big Laurel.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Young Funeral Home in Louisa.



Scott Ross - 1970-2008

Scott Ross, 38, of Waterloo, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Feb. 17, 1970, in Lawrence County.

His wife, Lisa Reaper Ross, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Wilgus Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
