Esther Abbott - 1922-2009
Esther Mae Fields Abbott, 86, of South Ashland, widow of Norman Abbott, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 10, 2009, in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center following an extended illnesss.
Esther was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Anson and Mary Artis Fields. She was a retired clerk with the Henry Clay Hotel and a member of Wildwood’s First Church of God.
In addition to her parents and husband, Esther was preceded in death by three brothers, Anson Fields, Jim Fields and Joe Fields; and two sisters, Anna Daniels May and Naomi Davis.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Lillian Fields; one brother-in-law, Eugene “Chick” Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Oct. 13, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

John A. Coburn - 1944-2009
John A. Coburn, 65, of Argillite passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
He was born Oct. 4, 1944, in Ashland, Ky., to the late Milford Maxwell and Leatha Moore Coburn. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gary Curtis Coburn; a mother-in-law, Doris Hensley; a sister-in-law, Shirley Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Fred Gumbert.
He was a member of Oakland Ave. Baptist Church in Catlettsburg, Ky., and retired from Water Works Department with the City of Ashland.
Survivors include his wife since March 8, 1968, D. Elaine Hensley Coburn; a son, John Michael (Consuela Massie) Coburn of Flatwoods; a daughter, Hollie (K. Arnold) Scaggs of Argillite, Ky.; and six grandchildren, Rachel and Matthew Scaggs, Gillian, Cassidy, Shirley and Isabela Coburn; four brothers, Kenneth (Virginia) Coburn of Ashland, Ky., Jerry (Elouise) Coburn of Ocala, Fla., Maxwell (Joyce) Coburn of Ceredo, W.Va. and Ronald (Judy) Coburn of Worthington, Ky. Also surviving are his father-in law, Marvin Hensley and his wife Elfreda of Argillite, Ky.; brother-in-laws, Steven (Cheryl) Hensley of South Point, Ohio and M. Jon (Vickie) Hensley of Argillite, Ky.; two sister-in-laws, Sue Gumbert of Jacksonville, Fla. and Tami (Billy) Edwards of Buchanan, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Dr. Tom Melvin will be officiating. Burial will be in Whitt Cemetery in Argillite, Ky.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at the funeral home.
William Eugene Burton
William Eugene Burton, 58, of Colonial Heights, Va., formerly of Greenup County, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Janet F. Burton; mother, Marie Potter Bates of South Shore, Ky.; sons, William Edward Burton and Trevor Ray Burton; sisters, Patricia Weatherington, Amber Burton and Crystal Burton; brother, Micahel Burton and his grandchildren, Mandy, Joshua, Kandice, Emily and Jacob. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Burton.
Mr. Burton was a U.S. Air Force, Vietnam Veteran and was employed at Reynolds Packaging Group.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, VA. Interment will be in Appomattox Cemetery in Hopewell, Va.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Carl “Gene” Smallwood - 1966-2009
Carl “Gene” Smallwood, 43, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio. Mr. Smallwood was born May 19, 1966, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Carl D. and Mary Nichols Smallwood of Greenup.
Mr. Smallwood was an electrician and loved to coon hunt.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chester and Leona Smallwood; grandfather, Raymond Nichols; grandmother, Oma Braden; and a brother, Steven W. Smallwood.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by four children whom he loved dearly, two sons, Clabourn Smallwood of Raceland and Ethan Smallwood of Greenup; two daughters, Sarah and Amanda Smallwood, both of Raceland; three brothers, Richard (Angie) Smallwood of Warnock, John D. (Teresa) Smallwood of Greenup and Jason Ray (Jeanette) Smallwood of Greenup; grandparents, Bill Braden of Greenup and Irene Baker of Wurtland; two grandchildren who were the light of his life, Katelynn and Noah Mullins; and nieces and nephews, Jeremy, Daniel, Jacob, Jenna, Seth, Megan, Melissa, Daniel Wade, Miranda, Shelby, Shane, Christina and Alex.
Gene was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Kenneth Sammons and Brother Kevin Witt. Burial will be in the Plum Grove Cemetery in Greenup.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and one hour before the service on Monday at the funeral home.
Wally Adkins - 1922-2009
Wallace Gilbert Adkins, 87, of Lexington, Ky., died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, in Central Baptist Hospital. He was born in Catlettsburg to Ruth Ann and Wainwright Adkins. Wally was a retired control systems designer for Union Carbide and a decorated World War II veteran. A recipient of the bronze star, he landed at D-Day and ended the war just south of Munich, Germany.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Beatrice Cassell Adkins; a sister, Pauline Ross; two brothers, James E. “Big Jim” Adkins Sr. and Emzie Adkins; and a brother-in-law, Luther Cassell.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheri Adkins Ross and her husband David of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter, Alicia Irene Rose of Lexington, Ky.; and a brother, Curt Cassel and his wife Betty of Ashland, Ky.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at the Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum. Pastor Charles Allen will officiate.
Friends may call from 12:30 to service time at the mausoleum.

Leo Dean Pinchin Jr. - 1943-2009
Leo Dean Pinchin Jr., 66, of Ashland, died Saturday in Ashland Community Hospice Care Center. He was born Jan. 30, 1943 in Braddock, Penn. His wife, Mary Coffey Pinchin, survives.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rose Hill Mausoleum Chapel. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
There will be no visitation.
Lazear Funeral Hopme in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
Garry Wiley - 1949-2009
Garry Roger Wiley of Paintsville, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center. He was born Oct. 13, 1949, in Johnson County. His wife, Geneva Davis Wiley, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hager Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Smith Family Cemetery in Paintsville.
Friends may call at 7 p.m. today and until time of service Monday at the church.

Ruby Flannery Carter
Ruby Flannery Carter, 78, of Sandy Hook, died Saturday at her residence.
She is survived by her husband Stanley Carter.

Ella Francis Ratliff
Ella Francis Ratliff, 62, of Paintsville, died Saturday at her home. She is survived by her husband, Roy Ratliff.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Paintsville Funeral Home with burial in the Mayo Memorial Cemetery in Paintsville.
Friends may call the the funeral home Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Vida Wilson Fraley - 1920-2009
Vida Wilson Fraley, 89, of Prestonsburg, died Friday at Riverview Health Care Center. She was born July 13, 1920. Her husband, Ben Fraley Jr., preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Prestonsburg. Burial will be in Richmond Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Dorothy Blankenship - 1931-2009
Dorothy Blankenship, 78, of Ironton, died Friday. She was born Aug. 8, 1931.
