Carl E. Lunsford - 1950-2009
Carl E. Lunsford, 59, of Ashland, died Oct. 5, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a sudden illness and surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 11, 1950, in Carter County, Ky., a son of the late Asa and Murl Burton Lunsford.
He was owner and operator of Ashland Vacuum for 35 years. He loved riding his motorcycle and boating and was active in the OCW wrestling organization, where he was known as “Dark Shadow.” He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Groves Lunsford of Ashland; a son, Michael Lunsford and wife Pam of Catlettsburg, Ky.; a daughter, Angie Lunsford Bruce and husband Steve of Ashland; a brother, George Lunsford and wife Sandra of Ashland; a sister, Darlene Hennecke and husband Carl Ray of Naples, Ky.; grandchildren Alexis and Logan Lunsford, Derek Stidham and Josh and Jacob Bruce; stepgrandchildren Alisha and Brock Anderson and Stephen and Ashley Bruce; sisters-in-law Barbara Hogsten, Gertie Groves Bostick and husband Les and Mary Groves Fryer and husband Terry; brothers-in-law Jess Groves and Douglas Tackett; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Chaplain Jimm Smedley. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 7, 2009, at the funeral home.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Cynthia N. Tremel - 1952-2009
Cynthia N. Tremel, 57, of Ashland, Ky., died Oct. 6, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born May 19, 1952, in Lexington, Ky., a daughter of Billie Maxine Robinson Neal of Ashland and the late Don Neal Sr.
She was a homemaker, a1970 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School and had been very active with the reunion committee. She was an avid marksperson who enjoyed decorating, boating and fishing.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Steve Tremel of Ashland; a brother, Don Neal of Frankfort, Ky.; a sister, Julie Ditty of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Jane (Alan) Nogiec of Windsor, Va.; a niece, Gretchen (Craig) Leszczynski of Lake Mary, Fla.; nephews Ben (Ashley) Ditty of Alabama and Seth (Rachel) Nogiec of Chesapeake, Va.; and great-nieces Sarah Leszczynski and Madeline Nogiec.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Fred Simpson. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Mark Edward Burdette - 1947-2009
Mark Edward Burdette, 62, husband of Carolyn Smith Burdette, formerly of Russell, Ky., died Sept. 29, 2009, in Beaumont, Texas.
He was born March 10, 1947, in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of the late Jiles and Dorothy (Deke) Burdette.
He was a graduate of Russell High School (1965) and had a master’s/undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky.
He was the proud father of daughter Amanda Jane Schoonover and son-in-law Christopher Schoonover and a loving grandfather to Jackson Carter Schoonover, all from Lawrenceburg, Ky. Later in life, he was also blessed with two children who took his name, Samantha Burdette Haddox and John Burdette.
A memorial service will be conducted by his brothers and sister at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at Princess Church of Christ by minister Jerry Morris.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
Richard I. Kincaid - 1932-2009
Richard I. Kincaid, 76, of Raceland, Ky., went to be with his Lord on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
Mr. Kincaid was born Nov. 16, 1932, in Pikeville, Ky., a son of the late Ezra L. and Artie Branham Kincaid. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William I. Kincaid; two sisters, Rosie Clark and Barbara Conley; and a special nephew, William Mark Kincaid.
He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict as a medical corpsman and dental technician. He retired from CSX Transportation as a railway clerk after 43 years of service. He also served as local chairman for Roosevelt Lodge 359 and vice general chairman of C&O System Board 146. He was a member of Raceland First Baptist Church and served as Raceland mayor, police officer and police chief. He was a member of the Raceland school board and was Raceland school board chairman and coached Raceland Little League football.
Survivors are his wife of 50 years, Fonnie Smith Kincaid; two sons, Richard Steven (Jane) Kincaid of Worthington and James Lawrence Kincaid of Raceland; and two grandchildren, Davin Nicole Kincaid and Taylor Ann Kincaid.
The funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by the Rev. Tom Stephens and the Rev. Tim W. Clark. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, Ky.
Visitation will be after 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mark Edward Burdette - 1947-2009
Mark Edward Burdette, 62, of Nederland, Texas, formerly of Robin Road, Kenwood, passed away in Southeast Texas Medical Center on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, after a lengthy illness.
Mark was born March 10, 1947, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Jiles Edward and Dorothy Ellen Deke Burdette.
He is a 1965 graduate of Russell High School, graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering and was employed with Chicago Bridge and Iron in Beaumont, Texas.
Mark is survived by his wife, Carolyn Smith Burdette; a daughter, Amanda Jane Burdette Schoonover (Christopher) and a grandson, Jackson Carter Schoonover of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Samantha Jo Hampton Burdette Haddox (Fred) of Hurricane, W.Va.; and a stepson, John Walter Hampton Burdette of Greenup, Ky.
In addition, he is survived by siblings Deborah Ellen Burdette Kirtz (David) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Michael Edward Burdette (Paula) of Cannonsburg, Ky., Patrick Edward Burdette (Rebecca) of Fishers, Ind., and Jeffrey Edward Burdette (Traci) of Ashland, Ky.
A memorial service planned by Mark’s wife and daughter will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at Greenup Presbyterian Church with our dear friend, Jack Edwards, officiating.
Toby King - 1927-2009
H. Toby King, 82, of Sand Hill, South Shore, Ky., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, in Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
He was born in Portsmouth on Sept. 18, 1927, to Harry and Jesse Dillon King.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Darlene Alexander King; a son, Terry (Sue) King of West Portsmouth, Ohio; three daughters, Cheryl King of Columbus and Ginger Cook and Tina King, both of South Shore; a sister, Shirley (Otis) Shepherd of Xenia, Ohio; four grandchildren, Chris King of Greenup, whom he reared, Teri (James) Ferry of Dayton, Nicole (Jason) Bentley of Garrison and Adam Cook of South Shore; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend, Keith Cooper of South Shore.
He retired from North American Refractories in South Shore and was a former fire chief with the South Shore Volunteer Fire Department. He was owner of the former Kings Roller Rink, a former Scoutmaster of Troop 98 in South Shore and attended South Shore First United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Elaine King; five sisters, Neola, Louise, Jeanette, Ruth and Irene; and five brothers, Harry, Don, Myron, Johnny Otis and Bobby Joe.
He touched the lives of many people and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family wishes in lieu of flowers, charitable donations be made to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 486, South Shore, KY 41175 or Boy Scouts of America, Troop 98, 2495 Lower White Oak Road, South Portsmouth, KY 41174.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore with the Rev. Tami Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Naomi Sayre Miller - l932-2009
Naomi (Sayre) Miller, 76, of Russell, Ky., passed away Oct. 6, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland following a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 10, 1932 in Cottageville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Holly W. and Hazel May (Hughes) Sayre.
She was a retired school bus operator with the Meigs County (Ohio) Board of Education and the Russell Independent School District. She attended the First Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Ray Miller; a son, Lee Floyd of Pomeroy, Ohio; a daughter, Leta Floyd of Pomeroy; a stepson, Joe R. Miller of Monticello, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Kendra Wilburn of Wurtland, Ky.; brothers Neil Sayre of Cottageville and Louis Sayre of Ravenswood, W.Va.; sisters Shirley Southall of Ripley, W.Va., and Lenora Ounan of Oscoda, Mich.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Casto Funeral Home in Evans, W.Va., by the Rev. Gerald B. Sayre. Burial will be in Meigs Memorial Gardens in Pomeroy.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Kenneth Eugene “Tuffy” DeLawder - 1944-2009
Kenneth “Tuffy” Eugene DeLawder, 65, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.
The Ironton, Ohio, native was born Oct. 4, 1944, the son of the late Darlene Gore Owens and Chester Owens.
Mr. DeLawder was a graduate of Ironton High School and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former welder with J.W. Bray Co. and of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Short Sr.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth M. DeLawder of Ironton; two daughters, Cheri DeLawder of Ashland, Ky., and Kimberly DeLawder of Ironton; five grandchildren, Cheyenne Belville, Jessica Brown, Chandler Dodson, Madison Baker and Kelly DeLawder; and a nephew, Michael Short of Ironton.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh Street, Ironton. Burial will be in Mamre Cemetery.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be by VFW Post 8850.
