Dennis R. Miller (1947-2009)
Dennis R. Miller, age 62, of Russell, went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. He was born Aug. 26, 1947, in Cicero, Ill., to the late R.B. and Ann Josephine Swibas.
He was employed by CSX as a blacksmith apprentice and was of the Christian faith. He was survived by a sister, Karen Thompson and her husband, James, of South Shore; a nephew, Steve Gartin and his wife, Lisa, of South Shore; a niece, Angela Lowe and her husband, Rob, of Kimper, Ky.; five great nieces and great-nephews, Alexander Sparks, T.J. Sparks, Ronald Lowe Jr., Steve Gartin Jr. and Angelina Gartin.
Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. today at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by the Rev. Winfred Fugate.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Dorothy Perkins (1946-2009)
Dorothy Perkins, 62, of Flatwoods, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at her residence. She was born Oct. 19, 1946, to the late Alonzo and Wanda Wilburn Sergent.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Estil Perkins; a sister, Arbella Douglas; a brother, Elwood Sergent; and a grandson, Tyler Perkins.
She was a retired nurse for the Sunset Nursing Home in Coal Grove, Ohio ,and a member of Grey’s Baptist Church in Greenup.
Surviving are two sons, Mark (Angie) Perkins and Mike (Alice) Perkins, both of Flatwoods; five sisters, Linnie (John) Chandler and Mickie Perkins, both of Flatwoods, Patty (Rick) Spears and Anita (Jim) Litteral, both of Greenup, and Kay (Bill) Isaacs of Cannonsburg; two brothers, Paul (Helen) Sergent of Greenup, and Johnny (Pat) Sergent of Ironton, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Samuel, James, Shayla, Deanna, Michael and Justin; two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Destiny; a special friend, Leon Helms of Worthington; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, by the Rev. Paul Clark. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Mary Carte (1921-2009)
Mary Elizabeth Short Carte, 88, of Flatwoods, went to be with her Lord Friday evening, Oct. 2, 2009, at her home with her family by her side. Mary was one of 11 children, born Jan. 24, 1921, in Greenup County to the late John S. and Minerva Kirk Short.
She was a member of White Oak Chapel in Flatwoods and was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, Mistletoe Chapter 144. She was Worthy Matron the same year her husband was worthy patron, associate matron, conductress and marshal. She was also a member of Ashland Chapter of White Shrine and was a Christian.
She was an avid gardener, an accomplished quilt maker and loved making teddy bears and other beautiful crafts. She enjoyed fishing with her family and friends. Mary devoted most of her time to the family she loved and cherished.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Carte Jr.; two brothers, Earny Lee Short and Marvin Dallas Short; four sisters, Lulie Sexton, Christeen Brown, Clementeen Short and Viola Clark.
She is survived by a son, Martin Darrell Carte of Ocklawaha, Fla.; a daughter, Theresa Carole Carte Morella of Morehead; a brother, Winston Short of Willard; three sisters, Elfreda Hensley of Culp Creek, Ky., Frances Adams of Flatwoods and Louise Salyers of Flatwoods; two grandchildren, Tamara “Tammy” Carte Hammaker of Weirsdale, Fla. and Jamie Carte Floer of Ocoee, Fla.; a great-grandchild, Mahalah “Haley” Zastrow of Weirsdale, Fla.; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Pastor Ted Hall. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today. Eastern Star services will be by officers and members of Order of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter 144 at 6:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be David Thomas, Ted Hall Jr., Rick Waddle, Mark Salyers, Terry Short and John Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne A. Morella, Winston Short, James Salyers, Marvin Hensley, Charley Adams, Mark Floer, Toy Darby, Hassell Green, Gary Sexton, Tom Short, Art Hammaker, John Cremeans and Dennie Whitt.

James Taylor Vipperman (1918-2009)
James Taylor Vipperman, 91, of Roe Creek in Lawrence County, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.
Taylor was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Buchanan, Ky., to the late Hobert and Nola Vanhorn Vipperman. He had 34 years of service as a Tennessee Gas Pipe Line employee and was a farmer. He served during World War II in the United States Navy and was a member of the Buchanan Chapel Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Copley Vipperman, who died in 2001; a daughter, Judy Bloebaum; and his step-mother, Rose Hatfield Vipperman.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Thorpe and Lola and husband Eddy Opell, all of Louisa; a special relative whom he raised as a daughter, Betty and husband Bill Riddle of Harlan, Ga.; a son, Jim and Carolyn Vipperman of Catlettsburg; five sisters, Midge Ramella of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Mary Jane Scott of Mansfield, Ohio, Geneva Eastridge of Mansfield, Ohio, Erma Jean Blevins of Huntington, W.Va. and Brenda Joyce Hunt of Mansfield, Ohio; four brothers, Jay Howard Vipperman and Bill Vipperman, both of Mansfield, Ohio, Stid Vipperman of Wooster, Ohio, and Bob Vipperman of Blacksburg, S.C.; special neighbors and caregivers, Don and Lori Epling; 10 grandchildren, Roger and Dorothy Bloebaum, Apryl and Jeremiah Thompson, Christina and Jason Humphries, Tammie and Lawrence Vinson, Mina and Micah Gastineau, Tim and Tracy Vipperman, Mike and Serina Vipperman, Jeremy and Shelli Vipperman, Shawn and Lisa Thorpe and Greg and Kim Thorpe and 15 great-grandchildren, Joey Bloebaum, Kayla Ann Thompson, Colton Thompson, Ben Taylor Humphries, Brady Vinson, Zoe Vinson, Belle Jenkins, Jadyn Vipperman, Mataya Vipperman, Allyson Vipperman, Reagan Vipperman, Josiah Vipperman, Brandi Lee Thorpe, Keisha Lee Thorpe and Morgan D. Thorpe.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa by Rev. Keith Workman. Burial will be in the Buchanan Chapel Cemetery in Zelda, Ky.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In his honor, Military graveside rites will be by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Mary Rowe (1945-2009)
Mary Elizabeth Rowe, 64, of Kenova, W.Va., now rests in the presence of the Lord after her passing Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, from King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Ms. Rowe was born Feb. 28, 1945, in Ashland, to the late Mitchell and Opal Marie Deskins Rowe. She was a manager for Big Bear, a clerk for Walmart and a member of Kenova Church of Christ. She enjoyed TV and old movies, but her greatest love was her grandchildren and her special furry friend, Kitty.
Sadly, Mary leaves behind a daughter, Melissa Rowe of Kenova, W.Va.; brothers Louis Rowe of Mo. and Mitchell Rowe of Kentucky; sisters Dinah Pratt of W.Va. and Virginia Smith of Ohio; and two precious grandchildren, Justin Gibson and Brandon Hodge.
A funeral service in remembrance of Mary Rowe will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. A message of hope and inspiration will be offered by Pastor Joe Pratt. Final rest will follow a solemn committal at Catlettsburg Cemetery.

Norman Henry Collinsworth (1936-2009)
Norman Henry Collinsworth, 73, of Kenova, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, in the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. He was born June 29, 1936, in Louisa, Ky. to the late Henry Lloyd and Julia Woyda Collinsworth.
Norman was a retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served during the Vietnam War. He retired as a chief master sergeant after 22 years of service. He also served as a hospital administrator at the Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss., and retired from the W.Va. Housing Authority.
Norman was a member of American Legion, Post 93, whose honor guard will conduct graveside rites.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Bocook and Bonnie Berry.
He is survived by his wife Louella Lou Brumfield Collinsworth; two daughters, Kimberly and Billy Ray Reynolds of Elizabethtown, Ky. and Toni and Keith Mills of Georgetown, Ky.; a son, Keith Collinsworth of Columbia, S.C.; a brother, Jeff Collinsworth of Catlettsburg, Ky.; five sisters, Joan Vonderheide of Phoenix, Ariz., Phyllis Clarke of Tallahassee, Fla., Patty Williams of Sumter, S.C., Donita Cox of Ashland, Ky. and Betty Jo Ratliff of Ashland, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Hannah and Collin Mills and Sam and Ben Collinsworth.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. Interment will be in Catlettsburg Cemetery in Catlettsburg, Ky.

Anna Mae Herron Stewart, 90, of Grayson, died Saturday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Hitchins. Her husband, Charles Stewart, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sparks Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bowling Cemetery in Htichins.

Mary Etta “Murkie” Osborne (1928-2009)
Mary Etta “Murkie” Osborne, 81, of Vanceburg, died Saturday in Southern Ohio Medical Hospice Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
She was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Thor. Her husband, Merrill Osborne, survives.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in the Howard Cemetery at Tannery.

Julie Katherine Russell (1966-2009)
Julie Katherine Russell, 43, of Ironton, died Saturday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
She was born Feb. 27, 1966. Her husband, David L. Russell, survives.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the City Mission Church in Ironton. Burial will be in Vernon Furnace Cemetery.
