Charlotte Kegley Canafax (1919-2009)

Charlotte Kegley Canafax, 90, of Ashland, Ky., died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland.

She was born Aug. 26, 1919, in Elliott County, Ky., to the late Gordon and Elizabeth Cox Kegley.

She was a member of the Ashland Senior Center, South Ashland United Methodist Church and the Lydia Circle and the American Red Cross. She was a graduate of the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Joliet, Ill., and the Erie School in Olive Hill, Ky. She was a registered nurse and worked in New York, Washington, D.C., Fairfax, Va., and in Ashland Ky., at King’s Daughters Medical Center and the former Elmwood Village Nursing Home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Daniel Canafax Sr.; two brothers, Frank and Bill Kegley; and three sisters, Lucille Davidson, Gladys Stegall and Pearl Edison.

Surviving are a son, Dan Canafax of Fleming County, Ky.; a daughter, Joy Crace of Ashland, Ky.; two sisters, Rosa Adkins of Ashland, Ky., and Opal Prince of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren Chanin Boyle and her husband, Chris, Ryan Crace and his wife, Gina, Laura Canafax and Philip Canafax and his wife, Sarah; and great-grandchildren Dylan, Alex and Chandler Boyle.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. The Rev. Lance Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Dean Family Cemetery at Globe, Ky.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Dolly Sammons (1913-2009)

Dolly Stevens Barker Sammons, 96, of Olive Hill, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, Sept. 27, 2009, in the Hospice House of Huntington, W.Va.

Mrs. Sammons was born June 26, 1913, in Carter County, Ky., to the late James and Margaret Barker Stevens.

Dolly was a homemaker and a member of Clifty United Baptist Church for more than 70 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Lonnie Barker in February 1960 and Tom Sammons in September 1974; a grandson, Jerrod Barker, in August 2009; five brothers, Tom Stevens, Marvin Stevens, Ezra Stevens, Oather Stevens and Hermal Stevens; and four sisters, Eithel Stevens, Ola Belle Knipp, Lola Messer and Elizabeth Waddell.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Emerson and Bonnie Barker of Alliance, Ohio, Ronnie and Linda Barker of Olive Hill, Ky., and Roger and Jeanette Barker of Ceredo, W.Va.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Phyllis and Charles Johnston, Sue and Roger Johnson and Joy Roe, all of Olive Hill, Ky.; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Stanley Stevens of Delong, Ind.; and three stepsons, Charles Sammons of Raceland, Ky., Claude Sammons of Minford, Ohio, and Bill Sammons of Swannanoa, N.C. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and other extended family members, church family, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Clifty United Baptist Church with Elder Clayton Marshall, Elder Eury Barker and Elder J.D. Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Olive Hill, Ky.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Ky.

Rob Randalls, Billy Rowe, Brad Fuller, Shawn Collins, Rick Burton, Jerry Barker, Albert Delong, Jimmy Binion and Dru Shoppe will serve as pallbearers. Walter Stubeblefield will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Robert Wendell Stapleton (1932-2009)

Robert “Bob” Wendell Stapleton of Tucson, Ariz., was welcomed home by Jesus on Sept. 26, 2009.

He was born Nov. 24, 1932, to the late Wendell and Arley Stapleton.

He proudly served our country in the Korean War as an aircraft navigator. Bob graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1960. He retired from Hughes Aircraft in Tucson as a chemical engineer in 1988.

He met and wed the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” Blunck, in Palmer, Alaska. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Rose.

He is survived by his brother, James Stapleton (Bobbie) of Ashland, Ky.; his wife Betty; and close friend Martha Harden.

Bob and Betty raised five beautiful children — Mary Stapleton of Kansas City, Mo., Cathy Stearns (Damian) of Payson, Ariz., Mark Stapleton (Carol) of Tucson, Paul Stapleton (Faith) of Houston, Texas, and Bill Mahoney of Willow, Alaska. Bob was proud of his lovely grandchildren, Lindsey, Chris, Mario, Taurean, Virginia, Vincent and Adam.

Bob was a hard-working, fun-loving, gentle man whose passions were home improvement projects, blackjack in Vegas, dancing and fun-filled family vacations. His memory will forever be treasured in our hearts and we all shall miss him dearly.

There will be a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Bring Funeral Home Inc., Bring’s Broadway Chapel at 6910 E. Braodway in Tucson, Ariz. There will be a funeral Mass at St. Francis De Sales at 22nd and Camino Seco at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009.

Essie Gue Smith (1931-2009)

Essie Gue Smith, 77, of Kenova, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 1, 1931, to the late Robert Preston and Sarah Emma Hyatt Hamm in Greenup, Ky. Mrs Smith was a retired custodian for the Wayne County Board of Education and a minister for Pentecostal Tabernacle.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Gue and Clyde Smith; four brothers, Lorren Hamm, Arvil Glenn Hamm, Elmer Hamm and Granville Preston Hamm; and two sisters, Maggie Elswick and Anna Mytle Scroggins.

She is survived by two daughters, Patty (Charles) Bryant of Kenova and Sharon (Carl) Smith of Catlettsburg; two sons, Rick (Aimee) Gue of Huntington and Billy (Angie) Gue of Kenova; a brother, Oval Hamm; a sister, Dorothy Cox; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home with J.R. Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Docks Creek Cemetery in Kenova.

Mary Tanner

Mary Tanner, 63, of Florida, formerly of Ashland, died Sunday in Florida.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Steen Funeral Homes in Ashland.



Everette Turner (1928-2009)

Everette Ray Turner, 81, of Lexington, formerly of Drift, died Saturday in the Knott County Nursing Home.

He was born March 1, 1928, at Minnie. His wife, Berta M. Turner, survives.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in the Martin Family Cemetery at Drift.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where there will be a service at 7 p.m. today.



Velva Penix (1922-2009)

Velva Mae Penix, 87, of Meally, died Sunday.

She was born June 25, 1922 in Martin County. Her husband, John Melvin Penix Sr., preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meally Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Ward Family Cemetery at Boonscamp.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

Linda Blanton May

Linda Blanton May, 62, of Leander, died Sunday in Highlands Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Bethel Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the May Family Cemetery at Leander.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Stanley S. Branham (1918-2009)

Stanley S. Branham, 91, of Mount Sterling, died Monday at his residence.

He was born Aug. 30, 1918. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Hunt Branham.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial with military rites will be in Branham Cemetery in Mount Sterling.

He was born March 13, 1964, in Lawrence County.

Stella A. Jiles of Pedro died Sunday in a local health care center.

She was born Aug. 29, 1923, and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Arthur “Poke” Jiles.

Arthur Willis (1926-2009)

Arthur Willis, 83, of Ironton, died Sunday at his residence.

He was born Feb. 5, 1926, and was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Lyons Johnson Willis.
