Buell R. Kelley - 1926-2009

Buell R. Kelley, 83, of Ashland, Ky. died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mr. Kelley was born March 3, 1926, in Wheelersburg, Ohio, to the late Haskell B. Kelley and Rosie Barker Kelley.

Mr. Kelley was employed by Zwick Music Co. and Flood Furniture as a musical instrument delivery man and repairman and retired after more than 50 years of service. He also attended Fannin Chapel United Baptist Church, was a former member of Ashland Area Wood Carvers, was active in the Green Thumb Society at the Ashland Area Art Gallery and attended Active Day of Ashland Medical Adult Day Care.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Kelley; a brother, Brady L. Kelley; a niece, Edra Kay Kelley; a great-niece, Holly Mae Kelley; a great-great-niece, Taylor Layne Lewis; and a nephew, Billy D. Kelley.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Alva Kelley of Isonville, Ky.; two nephews, Keith (Lee Ann) Kelley of Ashland, Ky., and Haskell (Lizzie) Kelley of Isonville; and two nieces, Edna Lee (Homer) Lewis of Isonville and Sherry (Lonze) Kelley of Sandy Hook, Ky.

A traditional funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Fannin Chapel United Baptist Church. Elder Eulas Adams, Elder Denzel Jenkins and Elder Philip Caudill will officiate. Burial will be in Kelley Family Cemetery in Isonville.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 at Lazear Funeral Home.



Johnnie V. Kitchen Sr. - 1921-2009

Johnnie V. Kitchen Sr., 88, of Ashland, Ky., formerly of Grayson, Ky., passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 22, 2009, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born July 30, 1921, in Rosedale, Ky., to the late William and Ethel Mobley Kitchen.

He was a retired boilermaker out of Local 105 in Piketon, Ohio, with 58 years of service. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Flaugher Kitchen, in 2007 and a grandson, Jeremy Rutherford.

Surviving are a son, Johnnie V. (J.V.) (and wife Wanda) Kitchen Jr. of Grayson; two daughters, Susan Kitchen (and husband Doug) McGinnis of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and Cindy Kitchen Price of South Point, Ohio; and six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Bill Bush officiating. Burial will be in McDavid Family Cemetery.

Mildred Hamm - 1933-2009

Mildred “Maxine” Hamm, 76, of Raceland, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Maxine was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Lewis County, Ky. She was the daughter of the late Ed and Dosha Wright Horsley.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Hamm; two brothers, Elmer Bentley and Otis Horsley; and three sisters, Altre Ramsey, Shirley Allard and Freeda Coon.

Maxine is survived by a son, William “Billy” (Donna) Hamm of Garrison, Ky.; five daughters, Bernadine (Carlos) Wolfe of Garrison, Jackie (Gary) Grim of Worthington, Ky., Ruby Campbell of Raceland, Ky., Donna (John) Lewis of Raceland and April Evans of Worthington; two sisters, Ruth Wright of Minford, Ohio, and Alberta Lane of Portsmouth, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Debbie (Jeff) Metcalf, Steve (Darla) Wolfe, Chastity (Justin) Miller, Kristy (Allie) Blevins, Angie (Curt) Skeens, B.G. (Amanda) Hamm, Amy (Greg) Gifford, Joey (Lacy) Lewis, Johnda Lewis and Katie Evans; and eight great-grandchildren, Molly Metcalf, Ethan Hartsell, Andrea Wolfe, Kala Blevins, Cody Blevins, Jaden Skeens, Eli Hamm and Hayden Gifford.

Maxine also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and very close friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., with minister Mark McKinney officiating. Burial will be in LeMaster Cemetery.

Lennora Eugenia Rayburn Duerk - 1921-2009

Lennora Eugenia Rayburn Duerk, 88, formerly of Flatwoods, Ky., passed away on Sept. 23, 2009, in Raleigh Court Healthcare Center in Roanoke, Va., where she and Ray moved in 2006 to be near family.

She was born Jan. 31, 1921, to the late Charles C. Rayburn and Phoebe Jane Callihan Rayburn in Flatwoods, Ky. She graduated as the salutatorian from Russell High School in 1940 and was trained as a stenographer. From 1942 to 1944 she worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. She served 30 years as an administrative assistant in the Ashland office of the Commonwealth of Kentucky Bureau of Rehabilitation.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William R. Duerk; her son, Gary R. Duerk, and his wife, Barbara Norris Duerk, of Roanoke; granddaughters Katrina Kai Hurt and her husband, David, of Hardy, Va., and Valissa Lee Duerk and her husband, Capt. Joe Grubb, of Roanoke; and three great-grandchildren, Henry Patsel Hurt, Phoebe Jane Hurt and Leo Rayburn Hurt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Edward C. Rayburn. Surviving are two brothers, James P. Rayburn and Charles C. Rayburn Jr. and his family of Newnan, Ga. Also surviving is Carolyn R. Miller, a loving niece living in Winter Park, Fla.; David and Dorothy Duerk and family of Flatwoods, June Duerk of Raceland and Bob Duerk of Tampa, Fla.

Lennora was a loyal and faithful servant of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She dedicated her services to the Lord as an organist at First Christian Church (Bridges Christian Church) for 35 years. In 1960 she was honored as mother of the year by First Christian Church. She was a member and secretary for the Builders Memorial Sunday School Class and a member of the Handy Arts Club.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens by the Rev. James Edward Rayburn. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Duerk will be at 3 p.m. at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, with fellowship with family and friends after the memorial service.

Donations in her memory may be sent to the adult choir music program at Bridges Christian Church, 1402 Kenwood Drive, Russell, KY 41169.



Ethel Porter Brown - 1918-2009

Ethel Porter Brown was received by her Heavenly Father on Sept. 23, 2009.

She was born March 12, 1918, at Wells Branch, Willard, Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Francis Marion and Ida Johnson Porter.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a Kentucky colonel and a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Brown Jr., in 1992; a sister, Sarah Rebecca Wells; four brothers, Virgil, Oscar Randolph, William Massie and Lewis Ray Porter; and a great-great grandson.

Ethel is survived by four sons, Edgar Marion (Betty Lou), Richard Allen, Gerald David and James Michael Brown (Bonnie); two daughters, Linda Elizabeth Brown and Rebecca Ann Boyd (Willis K), all of Ashland; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Effie Jane Brewer (Fred) and Annabelle Stewart; and three brothers, Proctor B. Porter (Juanita), Charles Edward Porter and Francis Marion Porter Jr. (Zella).

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel with the Rev. Jim Nichols and the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Patricia A. Burton - 1942-2009

Patricia A. “Patty” Burton, 67, of Prestonsburg, Ky., was called to her heavenly home on Tuesday morning, Sept. 22, 2009.

Patty was born April 12, 1942, in Carter City, Ky.

Ms. Burton is survived by her parents, James and Virgie (McGlone) Humphreys of Clio, Mich., and several cousins and extended family members who will greatly miss her.

She is also survived by all of the employees of Prestonsburg Health Care Center, to whom the family would like to express sincere appreciation for taking care of Patty.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Roger McGlone will officiate. Burial will be in Kiser Cemetery.

Paul Bonnette - 1926-2009

Mr. Paul Bonnette, 83, of Coal Grove, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born April 17, 1926, in Elizabeth, W.Va., the son of the late Eura and Willa (Hutchinson) Bonnette.

He was a truck driver, retiring from Ford Brothers and Ashland Chemicals after 44 years of service. He was a veteran of the Navy who served during World War II, a Mason and a member of the York Rites.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Forrest and Virgil Bonnette; and three sisters, Vivian Thompson, Esther Kidder and Helen McCoy.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Juanita Ann (Unrue) Bonnette, whom he married on April 17, 1949. He is also survived by a son, Mark Bonnette of Ashland, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Dale Morris of Coal Grove, Ohio; three grandsons, Chris Spence, Alex Bonnette and Levi Morris; two stepgranddaughters, Rachael Helfenstine and Tracy Howard; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Brandon Zimmerman and Haley and Blake Howard; two brothers, Denver Bonnette and Harold and Betty Bonnette, all of Marietta, Ohio; two sisters, Wilma and Duane Wilson of Elizabeth, Ky., and Roberta and Don Struble of Rising Sun, Md.; and many more family members and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton with pastors Brad Jenkins and Jason Plummer officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 8850.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. Friends may also call an hour before services Monday at the funeral home.



Mattie Parker - 1921-2009

Mattie Marie Hardy Parker, 88, of Ashland, died Wednesday following an extended illness.

She was born March 4, 1921, in Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Okie Parker.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Norman Chester Bentley - 1930-2009

Norman Chester Bentley, 79, of Firebrick, died Wednesday in University Hospital in Cincinnati.

He was born Sept. 23, 1930. His wife, Joyce Blankenbeckley Bentley, survives.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Firebrick Christian Baptist Church. Burial will be in Collier Memorial Gardens in South Portsmouth.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.



Alice Crisp

Alice Crisp, 92, of South Shore, died Thursday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore.



Ronni Morrison - 1957-2009

Ronni Brown Morrison, 51, of Olive Hill, died Sept. 18 in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

Her husband, Gary Morrison, survives.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carey Cemetery.

Jack Stephenson Jr., 52, of Landrum, S.C., husband of Annette Branham, died Tuesday at his residence.
