Janet Crawford (1923-2009)
Evelyn Janet Broughton Crawford, 85, of Ashland, passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.
Mrs. Crawford was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of the late Ernest and Samantha Webb Broughton. Her husband, Allen Brewer Crawford, preceded her in death.
She was a clerk with J.C. Penney’s, a receptionist with Habitat for Humanity and a member of Raceland Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy (Pat) Virgin of Worthington, Ky., and Donna Adkins of Ashland, Ky; two sons, Gregory (Jeannie) Crawford of Columbus, Ohio, and Chris (Wendi) Crawford of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Jack Broughton of Ashland and Harold Broughton of Merced, Calif.; a sister, Francis Caroll of Merced; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death was a brother, Gene Broughton.
A private service was Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.
Emmor Evans Jr. (1948-2009)
Emmor Evans Jr., 61, of Ashland, Ky., went home to be with his savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born Feb. 12, 1948, in Ashland, a son of Emmor Evans Sr. and his wife, Janet, of Ashland. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Lewis Evans.
He was retired from Marathon, a member of Pollard Baptist Church and a former member of Second Baptist Church. He was a 1966 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School and was a very active worker at the Little League and Babe Ruth fields.
Additional survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Deborah Chapman Evans of Ashland; a son, Justin Evans and wife Tiffany of Ashland; a daughter, Carrie Owens and husband Ricky of Ashland; a brother, Ronnie “Possum” Evans and wife Mary of Catlettsburg, Ky.; and two grandchildren, Aubrey and Carson Owens.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Michael Saunders. Entombment will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 10, 2009, at the funeral home.

Michael C. “Mickey” Stephens (1941-2009)
Mick Stephens, 68, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Monday, Sept. 7, 2009.
Mr. Stephens was born June 27, 1941, in Ashland. He was the son of Doris Stephens Morrison, who preceded him in death. In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ike and Myrtle Stephens.
He is survived by his son, Michael Martin “Marty” Stephens, and his sister, Eddie Sheila Stephens Lambert.
Mr. Stephens is also survived by his niece, Kerstin Lambert (Jeff) Lemaster of Ashland; a nephew, Ike Matthew Lambert and wife Dana of Fort Wright, Ky.; an uncle, C.E. “Ed” (Evelyn) Stephens of Ashland; and two aunts, Mrs. Josephine Robinette of Slidell, La., and Mrs. Phyllis Bennett of Ashland. He also left behind many cousins and other extended family members.
Also surviving are his special friends, Dr. Rudy Dunnigan, Mr. Ronnie Dunnigan, Keith Wessel, Danny Griggs and Sam Houston.
After attending the University of Kentucky, Mr. Stephens worked with his grandfather and uncle’s company, Ike Stephens and Son Construction Co. He was the developer and owner of T. Hill Construction Co., the owner of the Court of Three Sisters, MDM Supply and Stephens Hauling. He also worked with Addington Resources. Mr. Stephens’ companies were instrumental in the development and construction of several of Ashland’s landmarks.
The family will receive friends at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 10, 2009. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Holy Family Church, 900 Winchester Ave., Ashland. Services will be officiated by the Rev. John P. Noe and the eulogy will be presented by Dr. Rudy Dunnigan. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Griggs, Jeff Nichols, Greg Ross, Jeff McMonigal, Matt Lambert and Jeff Lemaster. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Rudy Dunnigan, Ronnie Dunnigan, Danny Griggs, Sam Houston and Keith Wessel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Shriners Children’s Hospital of Lexington, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502.
Earl Hardin (1943-2009)
Earl G. Hardin of Catlettsburg passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Hardin was 66 years of age, born Aug. 16, 1943, in Catlettsburg, Ky., a son of the late Lawrence and Virginia May Stanley Hardin. He was the manager of Martin Veterinary Clinic in Ashland. Earl gave his life to the Lord on Jan. 30, 2009.
Sadly, Earl leaves behind a loving family, including a son, Adam E. Hardin and his wife, Amanda, of Wurtland; two daughters, Paula Wade of Catlettsburg and Melissa Coomer of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Roger Hardin of Kenova, W.Va., and Lawrence Hardin Jr. of Catlettsburg; three sisters, Pearl Meade of Catlettsburg, Betty Hillborn of California and Bonnie Arthur of Kenova. Also surviving are Papaw’s precious grandchildren, Anthony Wade, 15, Dakota Hardin, 16 months, Amber Coomer, 15, and Nicole Coomer, 14.
He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Roy Hardin, Bill Hardin, Bobby Hardin, Donald Hardin and Frank Hardin; and a sister, Dorothy Hardin.
A funeral service of remembrance will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Officiating will be Brother Brian Hardin. Final rest will follow a solemn committal at Catlettsburg Cemetery.
The Hardin family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Phyllis Carter (1919-2009)
Phyllis Hager Carter, 90, of Flatwoods, Ky., formerly of Lexington, Ky., passed away late Saturday evening, Sept. 5, 2009, in Oakmont Manor Health Care Facility.
Ms. Carter was a daughter of the late Philip and Hager Coldiron Carter, born Aug. 3, 1919, in Catlettsburg, Ky. Phyllis joined the U.S. Navy upon her mother’s insistence that she see the world. She served a total of four years and attained the rank of yeoman first class. She was a member of the Christian Science in Lexington.
Phyllis attended Morehead State University and acquired bachelor’s and master’s degrees in teaching, taught first through third grade in the Lexington area and was also a book consultant. One interesting chapter in her life included being a dance instructor for an Arthur Murray dance studio. She said, “I have had a wonderful life. I am always thankful for the places I have seen and the nice people I have met along the way. The love of Phyllis’ life was her four-legged companion, Foxy.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor John Moorehead will officiate.
Visitation for family and friends will be after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Gordon Franklin Osborne (1947-2009)
Gordon Franklin Osborne, 62, of Lloyd, Ky., formerly of Bakersfield, Calif., died Monday morning, Sept. 7, 2009, in Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla.
Gordon was born July 13, 1947, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Roy Beekham and Dora Marie Cox Osborne.
He moved to California as a young man in 1959, retired as produce manager with the Thrifty Corp., and returned to Kentucky in 2009. He enjoyed flower gardening, fishing and the outdoors. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by two sons, James Roy Osborne and Sleepy Osborne; and three sisters, Delores Jean Young, Alice Darlene Sparks and Ruth Williams; and two brothers, Roy Osborne Jr. and Hiram “Sonny” Osborne.
Surviving are a son, Ronald Dean Osborne and wife Shelli of Fort Smith, Ark.; three brothers, Carl Herston Osborne and Patty Burns of Flatwoods, Ky., Wayne Douglas Osborne of Ashland and James Anderson Sherman of Bakersfield, Calif.; two grandchildren, Abbey and Zachary Osborne; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Tim Holmes. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Saturday.
Juanita Keiser (1920-2009)
Juanita Keiser of Hobe Sound, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009.
She was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Russell, Ky., to the late Jim and Sylvia Workman.
Preceding her in death were her husband, William “Chet” Keiser; a daughter, Jessica Jackson; a granddaughter, Bunny Bailey; a brother, Louis “Bud” Workman; and two sisters, Barbara Blevins and Madeline Clark.
Juanita was a member of Kenwood Missionary Baptist Church, where she was pianist and Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the Forest Rose Lodge 656 and a past worth matron of Eastern Star Mistletoe Chapter 144 in Russell.
She resided in Russell until retiring from Cinderella Sewing Factory then made her home in Florida with her daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Jim Howard. She always looked forward to coming home to Russell for her summer vacations.
Survivors include daughters Sylvia (Jim) Howard of Hobe Sound, Vera (Mike) Ison of Russell and Kaye (Paul) Webb, also of Russell; sons Bill (Linda) Keiser of Russell and Jon (Linda) Keiser of Hobe Sound; two sisters, Nellie Enyart of Lasage, W.Va., and Mercedes Schultz of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two brothers, William Strokes of Flatwoods, Ky., and James Workman of Russell; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with the Rev. Jack Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Friends may call an hour before services at the funeral home.
Glen Russell Oney (1927-2009)
Glen Russell Oney, 82, of Raceland, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
Mr. Oney was born Jan. 22, 1927, in Raceland, a son of the late Kenneth and Ethel Mitchell Oney. He was also preceded in death by a son, Daryl W. Oney; and three brothers, Ishmael Oney, Bobby R. Oney and Henry D. Oney.
He was a retired Ssteelworker for Armco Steel, a member and trustee of First Baptist Church in Raceland and a member of the Raceland Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, serving as fireman and chaplain.
Surviving are his loving wife, Eula Blevins Oney; two daughters, Roxann Scott-Fielder of Ashland, Ky., and Stephanie Jill Riffe of Greenup, Ky.; a son, Glen Leslie Oney of Raceland; three brothers, Clifford Oney and Billy J. Oney, both of Raceland, and Richard Oney of Ironton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Raceland First Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Stephens, the Rev. Charles W. Blevins, the Rev. Glenn Stephenson and Elder Gary Blevins. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.

Charles Derifield Jr. (1923-2009)
Charles J. Derifield Jr., 85, of Gallipolis, Ohio, passed on Sept. 7 in Scenic Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Lawrence County, Ky., to the late Charles and Mary (Kitchen) Derifield on Oct. 27, 1923.
Charles moved with his family as a small child to Deering, Ohio, and was a graduate of Coal Grove High School in the class of 1942. He was a watch repairman by trade for more than 60 years and was the owner and operator of the Derifield Jewelry store in Gallipolis. Charles was stricken with polio at the young age of 3 but overcame his severe handicap and was self-sufficient up until the last two years of his life. He loved to watch the birds from his window and always made sure the feeder was full. They will certainly miss his care.
Charles is survived by a sister, Beatrice (Vernon) Stuckey of Orrville, Ohio; brothers David Derifield of Ironton, Ohio, and James (Jinx) Derifield of Ashland, Ky., as well as a special angel friend, Lorna Johnson of West Columbia, W.Va. He will also be missed by several nieces and nephews who dearly loved “Uncle Chuck.”
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by three brothers, Chester, Dewey and Ronnie; three sisters, Evilena, Gladys and Mabel.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home in Ironton with Pastor Glenn Rowe officiating. Internment will be in Ice Creek Cemetery in Deering.
Calling hours will be an hour before the service at the funeral home in Ironton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
Kathy Asbury Estepp (1961-2009)
Kathy Asbury Estepp, 48, of Somerville, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009.
Kathy was born Aug. 31, 1961, in Fayetteville, Ark., the daughter of Kelly Asbury and the late Annabelle Young Asbury.
Kathy retired from AK Steel. She was a member of Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, Kathy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Claude and Erma Asbury and Charles and Lenora Young; a sister, Kimberly Asbury; and a niece, Samantha Lynn Stethen.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband, Steven Estepp; three sisters, Cheryl Black and husband Scott of Chesapeake, Ohio, Angela Dee Stethen and husband Mike of Bedford, Ky., and Susan Thornton and husband James of Ashland, Ky.; her stepmother, Bonnie Asbury of Ashland, Ky.; her mother-in-law, Ruth Estepp of West Carrollton, Ohio; two stepchildren, Sarah Sparks of Middletown, Ohio, and Steven Estepp of Middletown; the love of her life, her grandson, Jonathon Sparks of Middletown; six nieces and nephews, Michael Jones, Mathew Stethen, Dylan Stethen, Kirstin Fowler, Andrew Black and James Thornton; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Swart Funeral Home in West Carrollton by Pastor Mark Roach. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in West Carrollton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Foundation in Kathy’s memory.
