Stella Sark - 1912-2008
Stella W. Sark, 95, of Ashland, died Saturday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Boyd County, the daughter of the late Lewis and Mary E. Oppelt Geyer. She was the widow of Johnnie Sark. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Geyer and Albert Geyer, and a sister, Goldie Morman.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carman Funeral Home in Russell by Pastor Jon Rule. Burial will be in Kirby Flats Cemetery in Boyd County.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Paul M. Brown - 1920-2008
Paul M. Brown, 87, of Westwood, died Friday afternoon in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell following an extended illness.
Mr. Brown was born Nov. 6, 1920, on Brown Ridge in Elliott County, a son of the late John and Rhet Greene Brown.
He was also preceded in death by a brother and sister who died in early childhood; an infant daughter, Dorothy Ann Brown; a son, Robert Brown; and a brother, John Waldo Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Imogene Thompson Brown; two sons, Dr. Tom Brown and wife Dr. Freda Brown of Cornelius, N.C., and Paul E. Brown and wife Peggy of Corinth; two daughters, Loretta Payne and husband Charles of Ashland and Paula Robinson and husband Randall of Westwood; two stepsons, Carl Fannin and wife Carilyn of Grayson and Jim Fannin of Westwood; two stepdaughters, Sandy Marcum and husband Joe of Ashland and Theresa Pierce and husband Frank of Ashland; 10 grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mona Waggoner of Morehead.
Mr. Brown was the last surviving member of his 1939 graduating class of Sandy Hook High School. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who served in the guard unit assigned to Gen. Douglas MacArthur when he returned to Lady Island. He was the first GI the general spoke to when he set foot on the beach. Mr. Brown was also part of forces that occupied Japan after its surrender. He attended Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky and received his engineering degree from Marshall University. He was a retired combustion engineer at Armco Steel Corp. and was the commander of VFW Post 10017 in 1971 and 1972. He was a member of Fred Gross Lodge 953, F&AM, and was a Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Covington, Orient of Kentucky. In his later years he joined New Buckley Road Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Ed Fairchild. Burial, with military honors by VFW Post 8850 of Ironton, Ohio, will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. by officers and brothers of Fred Gross Lodge 953, F&AM.

Devon Lewis Mays - 1967-2008
Devon Lewis Mays, 40, of Ashland, son of Lewis and Phyllis Mays of Ashland, died Friday evening in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland following an extended illness.
Devon was born Dec. 10, 1967, in Ashland. He attended Catlettsburg Church of God and was a self-employed dry wall finisher.
He was preceded in death by a baby brother, Steve Mays, in 1952.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a daughter, Ashley Marie Mays; a granddaughter, Madalon Elizabeth; two stepchildren, Samantha Mays and Jessica Mays of Ashland; three brothers, Ricky Mays of Wurtland, Douglas Mays of Catlettsburg and Jeff Kersey-Mays of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Vicky Dalton of Westwood and Belinda Oiler of Raceland; four stepbrothers, David Kersey of Russell, Roger Kersey of Flatwoods, Greg Kersey of Orlando, Fla., and Doug Marsee of Ashland; and four stepsisters, Sue Lyons of Grayson, Diana Hart of Lawrenceburg, Jane Wyer of Lexington and Vickie Adams of Flatwoods.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother David McGranahan and Brother Lewis Clark. Burial will be in Kirby Flats Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Frances Dixon - 1949-2008
Frances Faye Dixon, 59, of Ashland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mrs. Dixon was born in Ironton, Ohio, on April 18, 1949, a daughter of Phyllis Naomi Holbrook Stephens of Flatwoods and the late Carl Eugene Stephens.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Reuben Daniel Stephens.
She was a member of Grayson Church of the Nazarene and was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.
She is also survived by her husband, Harold Ray Dixon of Ashland; a daughter, Jeana Catherine Hamilton and her husband, Nathan, of Raceland; two grandchildren, Shelby Ann Hamilton and Caleb Andrew Hamilton, both of Raceland; a brother, Robert Stephens and his wife, Darlene, of Warnock; a sister, Catherine Whitt and her husband, Rick, of Flatwoods; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Jimmy Harris.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Visitation will after 6 p.m. Tuesday and an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

James P. “June” Opell Jr., 87, of Catlettsburg, died Sunday in J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center in Louisa.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.
Phillip Barnett - 1960-2008
Phillip Wesley Barnett, 47, of Louisa, died Saturday.
He was born Dec. 3, 1960, in Louisa.
His wife, Ardy’s Ann Kirk Barnett, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Young Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Berry Cemetery on Sand Branch.

Mae Thornbury
Mae Thornbury, 96, of Greenup, formerly of Johnson County, died Friday at her residence.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Paintsville Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Conley Cemetery in Oil Springs.

Larry Wills - 1951-2008
Larry Wendell Wills, 57, of Quicks Run, died Saturday at his residence.
He was born April 16, 1951, at Quicks Run.

Anthony Ferguson - 1966-2008
Anthony Lee Ferguson, 42, of Morehead, died Friday at his residence.
He was born Jan 10, 1966.
His wife, Teresa Ratliff Ferguson, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Anthony Ison Cemetery in West Liberty.

Eddie Robinson - 1981-2008
Eddie Joe Robinson, 27, of Morehead, died Thursday in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
He was born July 27, 1981.
His wife, Melissa Jo Massengill Robinson, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery.
