Jason Donald Nichols - 1979-2008

Jason Donald Nichols, age 28, of Ashland, Ky., died Sept. 4, 2008 as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident on Ky. 5.

He was born Dec. 30, 1979, in Ashland, a son of Karl Clayton and Debra Benard Nichols.

He was an electrician with Hi-Tech, a member of Wildwood Baptist Church and was a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, where he was a member of the Tomcat football team from 1995 through 1997.

He is preceded in death by grandparents, Mayme and Okey Nichols and Grover Benard.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Michael Paul Nichols and wife, Joni, and Joshua Clayton Nichols, all of Ashland; aunts, Phyllis Maynard and husband, Fred, of Catlettsburg, Debbie Haines and husband, George, of Flatwoods, Karen Tarring and husband, Charles, of Louisa, Patricia McDonald and husband, Sam, of Ashland, Lynn Christian and husband, Jeff, of Ashland and Anita Tackett of Ashland; uncles, William Nichols and wife, Nola, of Ironton, Randy Nichols and wife, Sandy, of Barboursville, W.Va., Keith Nichols of Ashland and James Tackett and wife, Rebecca, of Rush, Ky.; two nephews, Michael Austin Nichols and Stephen Noah Clayton Nichols; one niece, Mikalyn Rena Nichols; grandparents, Donald and Emily Tackett of Ashland; as well as many family and friends.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Jim Nichols and the Rev. Everett Stevens. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at the funeral home.

Leona Chaffin Griffith - 1932-2008

Leona Chaffin Griffith, 76, of Columbus, Ohio, met her Saviour on Monday, Sept. 1, while a patient at Whitehall Nursing Facility in Columbus.

She was born May 14, 1932, at Straight Creek in Boyd County, a daughter of William and Virgie Adams Chaffin. She moved to Columbus in 1952 and had been a resident there since. She was a devout Christian and attended Stowe Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by three brothers, George (Duck) Chaffin, Luther Chaffin and Lewis Chaffin; five sisters, Gladys Chaffin, Ruthie Chaffin, Cora Chaffin Fannin, Fannie Chaffin McGranahan and Vannie Chaffin Forbis. Also, she lost two nephews whom she loved very much, Garland and Grover McGranahan.

Surviving are one sister, Thelma Chaffin Ghee of Rush; nephews, Harry Fannin (Carolyn) of Crooksville, Ohio, Billy McGranahan (Norma) of Rush, James McGranahan (Brenda) of Rolla, Mo., Darrel (Dukie) Chaffin of Russell, Jimmy Chaffin (Sharon) of Grayson, Doug Chaffin (Donna) of Summit, and Charles Chaffin (Doris) of Flatwoods; nieces, Brenda (James) McCown of Rush, Deborah Haper of Ashland, Sharon Kennedy of Columbus, Glenda Gail Nunn of Rollo, and Karen Lynn Mills of Columbus; and a special friend, Jack M. Adkins of Columbus. She will be truly missed by a host of great-nieces and nephews, friends and all who knew her.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7 at the funeral home officiated by the Rev. Art Bingham. Burial will follow at Ross Cemetery in Rush.

Pallbearers will be James Kitchen, Dougie Kennedy, Jackie Berry, Michael Nelson, Tim Nelson and Marty McGranahan.

A visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at O.R. Woodyard Funeral Home on High Street in Columbus.



Christopher Owen Sidell - 1960-2008

Christopher Owen Sidell, 48, of Ashland, Ky., passed from this life Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 to be with his heavenly Father.

He was born April 13, 1960, in Ashland, the son of Betty Daniel Sidell of Ashland and Robert Sidell of Texas.

He was an employee of Texas Instruments and a self-employed truck driver. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by Beverly Sidell, mother of his only daughter, Holly Sidell of Ashland; a sister, Kimberly Yongue of Ashland; a brother, Scott (Beth) Sidell of Ashland; and three nephews, Evan Yongue, Justin Penick and Aaron Penick.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 6, 2008 at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum by minister Pete Lunsford. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sidell family to help with expenses relating to their loss of a son, father and brother.



Wanola Smith - 1921-2008

Wanola Smith, age 86, of Ashland, (Westwood) Ky., died Sept. 5, 2008 in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Clarksburg, W.Va., a daughter of the late Fred and Hazel Webb Ashcraft.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Archie Smith, who died in February 2007; a son-in-law, Jack Kelley Jr.; three brothers; and two sisters.

She was a devoted homemaker and a member of Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jimmie Lewis Smith and wife, Eva, of Ashland; two daughters, Carol Jean Abbey and husband, Tom, and Violet Kelley, all of Ashland; a brother, Fred Ashcraft of Clarksburg, W.Va.; a sister, Wilma Gibson of West Milford, W.Va.; grandchildren, Angela Dawn Boggs and husband, Patrick, Jimmie Smith II and wife, Shauna, Capt. Patrick Kelley, Matthew Kelley and William Abbey; and great-grandchildren, Kristin and Cory Boggs.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Locklear. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at the Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.

William H. Shaffer - 1922-2008

William H. Shaffer, 86, of Monroe, Ohio, formerly of Ashland, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Butler, Pa., on June 17, 1922, to parents William L. and Marian (Goff) Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer worked as an accountant for Armco Steel, retiring in 1982 after 41 years of service. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife, Dorothy W. (Williams) Shaffer; sons, Bruce W. (Beverly) Shaffer and Barry C. Shaffer; daughter, Cynthia S. (John) Carsman; granddaughter, Courtney B. (Brad) Kifer; stepgrandchildren, Lea G. (Dane) Zuccaro and Evan E. Carsman; stepgreat-grandchild, Soren Zuccaro; special family friend, Thomas R. Goodrich; as well as many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant Life Care Fund, 225 Britton Lane, Monroe, OH 45050 or Hospice Care of Middletown, 1131 Manchester Ave., Middletown, OH 45042.

John Gaines Womack II - 1950-2008

John Gaines Womack II of Grayson passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 in King’s Daughters Medical Center after a sudden illness.

He was born June 20, 1950, in Ashland Ky., a son of Margaret Stephens Womack of Grayson and the late John Gaines Womack. John was the owner and CEO of Womack Development Inc. in Ashland and a partner with S W Grayson, LLC. He completed many successful commercial projects throughout the Tri-State area during his construction career.

John graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1973 where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and the UK track team. He has been an avid “Big Blue” fan all his life.

He was a member of the Grayson Jaycees, UK Alumni Association, the Ashland Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #350 and Bellefonte Country Club. He was also a member of the Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church.

Leisure activities he loved and enjoyed over the years were golfing, boating, traveling, going to UK games and spending time at his favorite retreat, Lake St. John. Since the age of 15, he loved singing and playing music with his friends and the BBC.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Amanda Hart Womack of Grayson; two sons, John Gaines Womack III of Lexington, Ky., and Hunter Frazee (Ashley) Womack of Grayson, Ky. In addition to his mother, Margaret Stephens Womack of Grayson, he also leaves behind a devoted sister, Karen L. Womack of Oxford, Ohio.

He enjoyed the support and companionship of his extended family George and Marsha Jones of Maysville, Ky., Ricky and Peggy Gray of Elizaville, Ky., and Frazee and Patricia Hart of Flemingsburg, Ky.; and six nephews. He also leaves behind his devoted companion “Baxter.”

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6 at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayson with the Rev. Norman H. Wasson and Rev. Brad Smart officiating. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Burial Park. Ashland Elks B.P.O.E. #350 will have services at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Family strongly suggest that memorial contributions be made to Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church, 207 N Hord St., Grayson, KY 41143. Richard Reed Jr. - 1970-2008

Richard Preston Reed Jr., 38, of Westwood, died Tuesday in Fort Pierce, Fla.

He was born June 5, 1970, in Birmingham, Ala.

Emma “Jeanie” Noble - 1948-2008

Emma Jean “Jeanie” Holloway Noble, 60, of Firebrick, died Friday in Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

She was born Jan. 17, 1948, in Firebrick.

Her husband, Donald Noble, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Firebrick Christian Baptist Church. Burial will be in Collier Memory Gardens in South Portsmouth.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Lisa Scott - 1961-2008

Lisa Kay Scott, 47, of Argillite, died Wednesday in Argillite.

She was born March 15, 1961, in Louisa.

Her husband, Bobby Ray Scott, survives.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Young Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Damron Cemetery.

There will be family visitation only.



Clay Dixon

Clay Edison Dixon, 52, of Olive Hill, died Friday in Rockcastle Hospital in Mount Vernon.

James Cooper Jr. - 1938-2008

James R. Cooper Jr., 70, of Garrison, died Friday at his residence.

He was born Aug. 25, 1938, in Garrison.

His wife, Juda Everman Cooper, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Cooper-Willis Cemetery in Garrison.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight and after 8 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



Alvie “Junior” Browning Jr. - 1945-2008

Alvie “Junior” Browning Jr., of Lovely, died Thursday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 15, 1945, in Mann, W.Va.

His wife, Debbie Burdette Browning, survives.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Moore Cemetery in Martin County.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. and until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.



Eddie Robinson - 1981-2008

Eddie Joe Robinson, 27, of Morehead, died Thursday in U.K. Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born July 27, 1981.

His wife, Melissa Jo Massengill Robinson, survives.
