She was born June 21, 1934, in Ashland, Ky., to B. Lawrence and Anna Louise Stinson. She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Ashland.
Throughout her school years, Justine’s love of music flourished — starting at age 6 with piano lessons, then playing trumpet in the marching band, French horn in the orchestra and culminating with organ lessons that she continued through college.
Following graduation from Ashland Senior High School in 1952, she attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., for a year. She and Tom Sprenger were married June 24, 1956. They lived in Indianapolis, New Orleans and Tampa prior to moving to Bradenton in August 1961.
In Indianapolis, Justine worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, Ground Water Division, and in New Orleans for the Army Corps of Engineers doing a hurricane research project. There she met Gen. Charles De Gaulle, president of France, when he entered the United States through the Army Corps of Engineers office.
Since moving to Bradenton, Fla., she became involved with the choir, Sunday school, youth group and the session, building and decorating committees of Palma Sola Presbyterian Church. For 23 years, Justine decorated the church sanctuary for Easter with orchids and with poinsettias at Christmas. Other activities included Panhellenic and the Manatee County Medical Auxiliary, past presidents of each; Entre Nous, past treasurer and life member; member of the DAR, Chi Omega and University of Kentucky alumni and YMCA board; and was a Bishop Museum and Planetarium volunteer.
She served on the board and executive committee of the board of the Florida West Coast Symphony for many years. Other FWCS activities include the governance committee and Emeritus Club. She co-chaired the Manatee Symphony Association Valentine Pops for three years.
