Stella Boyd (1911-2008)
Stella Boyd, 96, of Ashland, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, in Community Hospice Care Center.
She was born Sept. 20, 1911, in Cabell County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Pearl and Nora Owens.
Growing up on a small farm in Wayne County, W.Va., she attended the local rural schools. An excellent student, she developed a life-long love of reading at an early age. However, at age 16, she was forced to leave school and take a job in a commercial laundry to help support her family. During the Great Depression years, she was the sole support of her disabled father (a former brick layer), her mother and younger sister. In 1934, she married her husband, William. Although she became a full-time homemaker, she continued to help support her parents throughout their lives. During her long life, she remained true to her roots showing generosity in caring for family and joy in the nurturing of small animals and those without someone to care for them.
