Constance Ford - 1918-2008
Constance Lavonne Ford, 89, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.
She was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ray E. and Esther Graf Penick.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a retired school teacher for the Boyd County, Garrard County and Ashland City School systems. Her memberships include Colonial Dames, DAR, Three Arts Club, Red Hat Society, and Retired Teachers Association. She was a former board member of Friends of Hospice, a volunteer for King’s Daughters Medical Center, a docent at Highlands Museum, member of First Presbyterian Church Ladies Circle, representative to Kentucky Synod Presbyterian Church and a representative to the Lexington Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Forrest S. Ford in 1989, who was a former minister at Normal Presbyterian Church; one sister, Helen Johnson; two brothers, Ralph and Landis Penick; and a grandson, Hunter Long.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Jerald M. Ford and his wife, Judy of Ashland, Dennis E. Ford of Camp Nelson, Ky., and Byron S. Ford and his wife, Donna of Catlettsburg; one daughter, Yvonne Long and her husband, Wayland of Tullahoma, Tenn.; one sister, Thora Forrester of Manassas, Va.; three brothers, Dr. Richard Q. Penick of Jensen Beach, Fla., Frank Penick of Louisville, Ky., and Jack Penick of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Dr. Richard Forrest Ford of Ashland, Elliott Cammle Ford of Lancaster, Ky., Christy E. Ford of Ashland, JoEl English Ford of Lancaster, Alexis Long of New Brunswick, N.J., Kelley Ford of Berea, Ky., Allison Ford of Catlettsburg, Ky., Matthew Ford of Catlettsburg and Michael Emory Ford of Ashland; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services are scheduled with the Rev. James Brazell officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
A memorial service honoring Constance’s life will be at a later date.

Phyllis Shannon Rowe - 1927-2008
Phyllis Shannon Rowe, died Thursday, July 31 at the home of her daughter, Kelly Rowe, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
She was born Aug. 11, 1927, to Nettye Naomi Shannon and George Shannon of Ashland.
She attended Ashland High School and received a B.A. degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College. She taught Spanish at Ashland High School while completing a master’s degree in English education from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.
She married Herschel Dale Rowe of Ironton, Ohio. She was a homemaker and moved with her husband to a number of states, finally settling in Douglas, Ga., where she lived the last 30 years of her life. When her children were grown, she worked in the South Georgia College library. She was an avid reader and an advocate for persons suffering from mental illness. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and continued to travel widely.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and her brother, Walter L. Shannon of Ashland. She is survived by her brother, James L. Shannon of Ashland; her sister, Roberta Lee Kruzan of Marietta, S.C.; her three children, Shannon Rowe of Douglas, Sean Rowe of Durham, N.C., and Kelly Rowe; and her granddaughter, Clio Flikkema-Rowe.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 6 at First United Methodist Church in Douglas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Satilla Regional Library Children’s Department, 200 S. Madison Ave., Douglas, GA 31533. Donations will be used to purchase children’s books. Bookplates will be placed in the books to indicate they are a memorial.
Mark Keith Stone Sr. - 1952-2008
Teresa Ann Stone - 1952-2008
Mark Keith Stone Sr., 55, and Teresa Ann Stone, 56, both of Ashland, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008.
They are survived by two sons, Keith Stone and his wife, Holly, of Ashland and Clifford Martin Stone of Salem, Va.; and a daughter, Sarah Stone of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mark was born Sept. 29, 1952, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the son of the late Clifford Sr. and Gladys Chandler Stone. He was the president of Air Equipment Sales and Service, a member of Elks Lodge No. 350 BPOE, Greenup Masonic Lodge No. 89, El Hasa Shrine, and Ashland Regional Airport Board of Directors. He was a pilot, regional director for the Association of Independent Compressor Distributors and a member of the Ashland Commandery No. 81. He also attended Bridges Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ron Stone Sr. and Carlos “Doc” Stone.
Surviving, in addition to his children, are one sister, Janet Cannon of California, and two brothers, Clifford Stone Jr. and Elmer Jack Stone, both of South Shore, Ky.
Teresa was born July 10, 1952, in Grayson, Ky., the daughter of James Womack and his wife, Minnie, of Grayson and the late Dorothy Rae Waggoner Womack. She was a retired teacher for the Raceland-Worthington School District with 28 years of service. She was the financial officer at Air Equipment Sales and Service, a volunteer for the Festival of Trees at the Paramount Arts Center and actively involved in all activities at Raceland and Worthington schools. As a state officer for FBLA, she established the banking program for the Raceland and Worthington schools. She was a Key Club sponsor, active in Kiwanis and took students to state and national competition in FBLA. She also attended Bridges Christian Church.
In addition to her father and children, she is survived by a brother, James “Chip” Womack of Ashland.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Bridges Christian Church, with Mark McKinney officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Nola Colvin - 1931-2008
Nola Cox Colvin, 77, of Catlettsburg, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. Colvin was born Aug. 3, 1931, in Lawrence County, Ky., a daughter of the late Sheridan Cox Sr. and Ollie Workman Cox. Her husband of 53 years, Foster V. Colvin Jr., preceded her in death in 2004. She was a wonderful homemaker, cook and candy maker. She was a member of Mount Zion Freewill Baptist Church.
Sadly left behind is her family: three daughters, Ollie Colvin and Jo Ann Colvin, both of Catlettsburg, and Elizabeth (Billy) Cline of Ashland; six brothers, Ira Cox, Richard (Faye) Cox and the Rev. Burl (Lorene) Cox, all of Catlettsburg, the Rev. Paul (Carolyn) Cox of Louisa and Pete (Barbara) Cox and Larry (Anna) Cox, all of Ashland; a sister, Sue (Lonnie) Steele of Catlettsburg; her granddaughters, Christy (Mark) Deerfield of Kannapollis, N.C., and Susie (Cliff) Massie of Catlettsburg; great-granddaughters Sydni Massie and Emily Massie; and lovingly called Mammy by Nancy and Chris Rogers of Edmond, Okla., Brad Steele of Catlettsburg, Ray, Dee and Darian Steele of Ashland, Paula, Roger, Craig and Noah Lambert of Louisa, Ky., and Kim, Megan, Jeremy, Paige and Devyn Snead of Louisa.
Preceding her in death were a brother, Sheridan Cox Jr., and three sisters, Ida Hughes, Mary Cantrell and Birdie Phillips.
A funeral service in remembrance of Nola Colvin will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. The Rev. Paul Cox will offer words of inspiration and comfort, with a heartfelt eulogy by the Rev. Mike Cox and personal comments from the Rev. Billy Harris. Special music will be by Melissa Cox.
Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland. Serving as casket bearers will be Ray Steele, Brad Steele, Cliff Massie, Mark Cox, Chris Rogers and Noah Lambert.
Those wishing to call on the Colvin family may do so from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Sandra Hicks - 1963-2008
Sandra Hicks, 45, of Milton, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Hicks was born Feb. 1, 1963, in Ironton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Harold and Martha Salyers Meadows. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Pam Baer.
Surviving are her loving husband, Paul V. Hicks; a son and his wife, Paul A. and Michelle Hicks of Cannonsburg, Ky.; two sisters, Norma Stubbs of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Diana Smith and her husband, Fred, of Monroe, Mich.; a brother, Harold Meadows Jr. of Flatwoods, Ky.; brother-in-laws and sisters-in-law, Jim Baer of Ashland, Ky., Eddie Hicks of Florida, Ruby Oliver and Betty Bartrum, both of Flatwoods, Sue Parsons, Mike Hicks, Charles Hicks, Betty Vanover, Melvin Hicks and Henderson Hicks, all of Ashland, and Mark Hicks of Lexington, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Aug. 20, 2008, with the funeral service at 7 p.m. by Bishop Henry Montgomery at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland.
Charles Henry Manis - 1928-2008
Charles Henry Manis, 80, of Chesapeake, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in Chesapeake Home for Adults in Chesapeake.
Mr. Manis was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late William and Mary Kazee Manis. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Kirk Manis; and three brothers, Donald Manis, William Manis and Harold Manis.
He was a retired superintendent for Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va., and a retired U.S. Navy veteran.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda McDougle of East Lake, Ohio, and Kathy (Art) Ewing of Houston, Texas; a son, Charles (Laurie) Manis of Chesapeake; eight grandchildren, Christopher Manis, Micheal Manis, Matthew Manis, Louanna Adkins, Carl Yoakem, David Yoakem Sr., Art Ewing Jr. and Angie Soto; and eight great-grandchildren, Adam Manis, Josh Adkins, Cody Adkins, David Yoakem Jr., Kyle Yoakem, Nick Yoakem, Nadia Soto and Bobby Ewing.
Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky., by the Rev. Jim Pridemore. Burial will be in Rude Cemetery in Flatwoods, Ky.
Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Beulah Gearhart - 1924-2008
Mrs. Beulah J. Gearhart, age 83, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Aug. 17 in The Johns Hopkins Hospital after an acute medical illness.
She was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Wolf, Ky., the daughter of the late Brady L. and Grace Wilburn Underwood.
She was a retired elementary schoolteacher in the Carter County/Ashland school systems. She was a graduate of Olive Hill High School and Morehead State University. She was a lifelong resident of eastern Kentucky and moved from Ashland to the Masonic Home of Maryland in Cockeysville in June 2007. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, Olive Hill Chapter.
Her husband, J. Edwin Gearhart, preceded her in death in 1994.
She is survived by her son, Dr. John Gearhart and his wife, Dr. Susan Lyn Gearhart, and her granddaughter, Miss Grace Elizabeth Gearhart, all of Towson, Md. Other survivors include her brothers, John Underwood of Frankfort, Ky., and Tom Underwood of Dayton, Ohio, and her sisters, Mrs. Jesse Stepanik of New Port Ritchey, Fla., and Mrs. Mary Becker of Parma, Ohio.
Interment will be in Olive Hill Memorial Gardens in Olive Hill, Ky.
A memorial service will be in the near future at Olive Hill Methodist Church.
Expressions of sympathy may be given to Save the Children or a children’s charity.
