Lula J. Kouns (1933-2008)
Lula J. Kouns, 75, of Ashland died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at King’s Daughters Medical center in Ashland. She was born May 14, 1933, in Logan, W.Va., the daughter of the late Charles C. and Martha Ferrell White. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James Harold Kouns, who passed away on Sept. 27, 2007.
She was a member of Meade Station Church of God and was a devoted homemaker.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Delores Scott.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony Dewayne Kouns and wife, Linda, of San Antonio, Texas, Terry James Kouns and wife, Debra, of Greenup, Gene Kevin Kouns and wife, Carla, of Boyd County and Phillip Dean Kouns and wife, Brenda, of Ashland; three brothers, Russell William White, Charles Ray White and Ernest White; and three sisters, Anna Gay Koutsunis, Judy Thorn and Joyce Ball; 12 grandchildren, Teresa, James Anthony, Christina Marie, Tracy James, April, Brian, William Robert II, Alicia Brianne, Victoria Jean, James William, Justin Phillip and Kolin Glen; and seven great-grandchildren, Cristin, Christopher, Lon, Lonnie, Jordan, Emily and Jayden.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home, Marshall Steen Chapel, with Pastor Rob Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Ruth VanHorn (1919-2008)
Ruth L. VanHorn, 89, of Trinity Retirement Station in Flatwoods, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was born Jan. 11, 1919, in Catlettsburg, the daughter of the late Granville and Pearlie Rice Neal. She was the wife of the late Garland M. VanHorn, who passed away in 1994. She was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church and the Greenhills Eastern Star and was a homemaker.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Granville Neal Jr. and Douglas Neal; and two sisters, Bertha Frances McCarthy and Gladys Queen.
Survivors include one son, Bruce VanHorn and wife, Diane, of Ashland; one daughter, Sue Hale and husband, David, of Nicholasville; two brothers, James Neal of Charleston, W.Va., and Hiram Neal of Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Annabelle Neal and Willa F. VanHoose, both of Ashland; one sister, Mildred Kress of Ashland; and three grandchildren, Andrea Hale and Evan and Emily VanHorn.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, with Minister J.R. Gullett officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Wells (1939-2008)
James C. (Jim) Wells, 68, of Wells Lane in Morehead, passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, following an extended illness. He was born Oct. 31, 1939, in Morgan County, the son of J.C. and Celia Richardson Wells. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald H. (Don) Wells and William T. (Bill Tom) Wells.
Jim is survived by his wife of 43 years, Brenda Lewis Wells, whom he married June 5, 1965; one brother, David Wells and his wife Jo; two sisters, Dean Carter and Clydia Jo Wood, all of Morehead; and several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to special caregiver, Kay Freimuth; loyal friend, Della Clay; and Jim and Brenda’s best friends for 40 years, Ray and Wanda Conn.
Jim was a prominent business leader in the community. He was a partner in many businesses over the years: J.C. Wells & Son, Inc., Wood Products Transport, Inc., A.D.O.M., Inc., Fleming Wood Products, Inc., Menifee Forest Products, Midland Properties and KY Uplink Satellite, Inc.
He was a founding member of KFIA and served as president and as a board member for many years. Jim was one of the founders of the Morehead National Bank and served on the board. He was presently a member of the board of Whitaker Bank in Morehead. Jim was a 1957 graduate of Breckinridge Training School and attended Morehead State College. He served in the U.S. Army for one year of active duty at Ft. Chaffee, Ark., training recruits and then served six years in the Army Reserve. Jim was a member of the Morehead First Church of God.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Mon., Aug. 18, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tim Rhodes and the Rev. Allan Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
Pallbearers will be David Butcher, Ray Conn, Ray Crisp, Darwin Gregory, Johnny Johnson, Thomas Lewis, David Wayne Todd and Joe Stacy Wells.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502

Maud Coldiron (1914-2008)
Maud May Wampler Coldiron, 94, of Greenup died Friday in Wurtland Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 4, 1914, in Greenup.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial will be in Wampler Cemetery in Greenup.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Charlene Hacker (1938-2008)
Charlene Hacker, 69, of Louisa died Friday.
She was born Oct. 24, 1938, in Chapman.
Her husband, Lenox Hacker, survives.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Young Funeral Home Chapel in Louisa. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery in Louisa.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Albert Spencer
Albert Earl Spencer, 51, of Wellington died Saturday at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Menifee Home for Funerals in Frenchburg. Burial will be in Marlin Spencer Family Cemetery in Denniston.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Tillie Meade
Tillie Meade, 89, of Paintsville died Saturday at Mt. Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville.
