Franklin Leroy Adams (1944-2008)

Franklin Leroy Adams, age 63, of Ashland, Ky., died suddenly Sunday evening, July 20, 2008 in Virginia Beach Sentera General Hospital in Virginia Beach.

He was born Nov. 30, 1944, in Ashland, a son of the late Charles Edward Adams and the late Zeolla Darby Adams Ward.

He retired from AK Steel after 38 years of service.

Frank was a born again Christian who attended the First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg. During his life, he served as president and co-founder of the Catlettsburg/Boyd Optimist Club, co-founder and chairman of the Boyd County J.F.L., Eidson Elementary basketball coach, officer and coach of Boyd National Little League, Optimist Girls softball and basketball coach and officer, Summit Elementary Booster Club founder and president, basketball coach for Summit Elementary 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, Boyd County Elementary basketball chairman, youth soccer coach, Boyd County Quarterback Club president, vice president of the Boyd County Hardwood Club, Boyd County substitute teacher, and Boyd County High and Summit Elementary site-based council member.

He loved dirt track racing, golf, farming, hunting, fishing and working with youth in the community. He never met a stranger, loved helping people and was always quick to lend a helping hand. He was a precious husband, loving father, grandfather and a devoted friend who will be missed by all.

Surviving are his stepfather, George Ward of South Point, Ohio; his wife of 27 years, Connie Gail Johnson Adams of Ashland; five sons, David Wayne Adams, Franklin Dow Adams, Marcus Galen Adams and wife, Sheena, James Edward “Jimmy” Adams, and Daniel Lee Adams, all of Ashland; a daughter, Amber Diane Ferguson and husband, William of Lexington, Va.; brother, Gary Adams and wife, Shirley of Ashland; sister, Gloria Martin of Ashland; nine grandchildren, Greg Adams, Taylor Adams, Tyrah Adams, Trey Clark, Zach Adams, Bryce Stevens, Liam Ferguson, Tucker Adams and Keagan Adams; and a great-grandchild, Carson Botz.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Stan Williams. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, July 23, 2008 at Boyd County Middle School.

Jane Day Tyson Fraley (1944-2008)

Jane Day Fraley, 64, of Summit, Ky., wife of James R. Fraley, died Monday morning at her home following a short illness.

Jane was born June 8, 1944, in Anniston, Ala., a daughter of the late James and Josephine Harris Tyson.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, David Wayne Fraley of Milton, W.Va., and James Adam Fraley and wife, Sabrina of Georgetown, Ky.; three daughters, Cindy Jo Sipps of Ashland, Ky., Jackie Lynn Walker and fiance Scott Varnadore of Beaufort, S.C., and Elizabeth Ann Lowe and husband, Greg of Frankfort, Ky.; one brother, Jerry Tyson and wife Betty of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Judy Gresham of Oregon; six grandchildren, Ricky Sipps, Mandy McWain, Jeremiah Walker, Shane Walker, Eric Lowe and Greta Lowe; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Jason Porter. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4338 13th St., Ashland, KY 41101.

Bertha Eldridge Wagoner (1964-2008)

Bertha Eldridge Wagoner, age 44, of Isonville, Ky., passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, July 22, 2008 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Ms. Wagoner was born Jan. 3, 1964, in Elliott County, Ky., a daughter of the late Dock Con and Gustalva Sparks Eldridge.

Bertha was a caregiver and homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Homer Eldridge, Benny Eldridge and Jeff Eldridge.

She is survived by one son, Jeremy Wagoner of Olive Hill, Ky.; three daughters, Jessica Watts of Isonville, Casey Wagoner of Inez, Ky., and Katie Wagoner of Isonville; six sisters, Wandalene Smith of Sandy Hook, Ky., Lorene Marler of Morehead, Ky., Dollie Skaggs of Isonville, Connie E. Lewis and Ellen Porter, both of Isonville and Martha Hudson of Hartford City, Ind.; two grandkids, Jessie James Watts of Isonville and Dayla Lashea Wagoner of Olive Hill; along with a host of special nieces and nephews, and family and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 in the chapel of the Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook with Brother Mike Adkins and Brother Darrell Fyffe officiating. Burial will follow in Wagoner Family Cemetery on Anderson Branch Road in Elliott County.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. tonight and anytime before the service hour Thursday at the funeral home.

Dustin Tackett, T.J. Eldridge, Marcus Moore, Scotty Hamilton, Paul Dale Hamilton, Wesley McDowell, Randy Allen Gumm, Tennyson Gumm, James Paul Wagoner and Jeremy Boggs will serve as pallbearers.



John Mercer

John Mercer of Bruin died Monday, in Elliott County Nursing & Rehab Center in Sandy Hook.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Elizabeth “Libby” Woods Mercer in 1996.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.



Leota Derosett (1903-2008)

Leota M. Derosett, 104, of East Point, died Tuesday in Riverview Health Care Center in Prestonsburg.

She was born Nov. 22, 1903, in Johnson County.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Music Family Cemetery in East Point.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.



Mary Massie (1935-2008)

Mary Ellen Massie, 72, of Ironton, died Saturday.

She was born Sept. 25, 1935, in Lawrence County.

Her husband, Ralph L. Massie, died in 1978.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

There is no visitation.

Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy Clark (1989-2008)

Timothy David Clark died on Sunday.

The funeral will be at noon today at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to Children’s Hospitals in Columbus, and Cincinnati, Cabell Huntington Hospital or a favorite charity.
