Betty Eileen Hornbuckle Smith (1925-2008)
Betty Eileen Hornbuckle Smith, 83, of Ashland, Ky., died July 18, 2008 in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility following a sudden illness.
She was born March 24, 1925, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Berkley and Elestine Strosnider Hornbuckle.
In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Dwight Smith in 2000; and a brother, William Milton Hornbuckle.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Gary D. Smith of Winchester, Ky., and Brian Smith of Ashland; a daughter, Sharon Kay Diehl and husband Ronald of Hialeah, Fla.; a brother, James Hornbuckle and wife, Lois of Cookeville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Stephanie Cabana of Jacksonville, N.C., Carrie Johnson and husband, Kirk of Sunrise, Fla., Nathan Diehl and wife, Cindy of Poinciana, Fla., and Christopher Smith of Cleveland, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Emily Cabana, Kai and Jadon Johnson, Dominic Alexander Smith and Ivan Sebastian Diehl.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. Troy Poff. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Wilma Jeanne Carman Rayburn Callahan (1922-2008)
Wilma Jeanne Carman Rayburn Callahan, 85, of Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Russell, died July 13, 2008 in Vitas Hospice Inpatient Unit of Winter Park.
She was born July 17, 1922, in Ironton, Ohio. She was the daughter of J. Stewart and M. Blanche Lyons Carman. She was a graduate of Russell High School in 1940 where she was valedictorian and prom queen.
She was preceded in death by Edward Callihan Rayburn (Battle of the Bulge-1944) and Michael James Callahan (1982).
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Rayburn Miller; sons, Stephen Michael Callahan and Charles “Chuck” Lee Callahan and wife Cindy; and three grandchildren, Troy C. Miller, Kacey C. Harlan and Chase M. Callahan. She is also survived by a sister, Joyce C. (Jack) Riggs.
Graveside services were held July 21, 2008 at Glen Haven Cemetery in Winter Park by Tom Hensley, minister.
Pauline Hughes Powell (1927-2008)
Pauline Hughes Powell, age 81, of Flatwoods, Ky., died July 20, 2008 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born May 21, 1927, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ida B. Hughes and an aunt and uncle who raised her, I.C. and Elva Glenn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Powell; and a son, Robert M. Powell.
She was a homemaker and a member of Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods.
Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Powell (Michael R.) Stewart of Ashland; and a granddaughter, Rachel Rebecca Stewart of Alexandria, Va.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Don Young. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Nona Skaggs (1916-2008)
Nona Ellen Lewis Skaggs, 92, passed away Sunday morning, July 20, 2008 at her home in Isonville, Ky.
Our precious mother and grandmother was born Feb. 10, 1916, in Isonville, a daughter of the late Howard and Margaret Gilliam Lewis. She was married to her loving husband, John Skaggs, on April 10, 1935, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1965.
To this union was born six children, Marshall Skaggs who preceded her in death on May 21, 1994 and her surviving children, Alice and Wilbur Ison, Kenneth and Sharon Skaggs, Mitchel and Judy Skaggs, Roger and Mary Skaggs and Gail and Allan Ison, all of Isonville; a daughter-in-law, Bessie Skaggs of Grayson; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Tina Ison; a great-great-grandchild, Hunter Ison; five brothers, Thurman Lewis, Troy Lewis, Vern Lewis, Erma Lewis and Carson Lewis; and four sisters, Audrey Lewis, Arla Adkins, Flona Hutchinson and Bessie Patrick.
Nona was a wonderful homemaker and worked as a cook for several years at the Isonville Elementary School. She was a hard-working Christian mother and always looked out and cared for her family. She enjoyed making her home a welcome place for her many family and friends. She was a great cook and enjoyed quilting, embroidering and gardening. She was a member of Fannin Chapel United Baptist Church at Beech Grove and was baptized by J.W. Brickey on March 10, 1932. Her love for God and family was evident to all those who knew her.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook by ministers Lowel Ferguson, Tim Porter and Leo Ison. The obituary reading will be by Carson Skaggs, prayer by Kenneth Skaggs and songs by Allan and Gail Ison and family, Debbie Salyers and Barbie and Daniel Hale. Burial will be in Skaggs Family Cemetery in Isonville.
Pallbearers will be Leo Ison, Rickey Skaggs, Carson Skaggs, Kenny Skaggs, Jim Skaggs and Casey Skaggs.
Honorary pallbearers will be Allan Ison, Wilburn Ison, Bill Patrick, Myrtle Connolly and other family who provided loving care for our mother.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Sheila M. Wellman (1951-2008)
Sheila M. Wellman, 56, of Fort Gay, W.Va., passed away Sunday, July 20, in King’s Daughters Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Sheila was born Nov. 28, 1951, in Wadsworth, Ohio, the daughter of Frank Salyers and Nellie Jordan.
Survivors include her loving husband, John Douglas Wellman; her mother, Nellie Jordan; three sons, Jeremy and Crystal Wellman, Joshua Wellman of Fort Gay and Jason and Natalie Wellman of Louisa, Ky.; one brother, Steve and Penny Salyers of Kenova, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren, Jordan, Jacob, Jared, Jenna, Ashley, Nicholas, and Madison.
Brother Ric Frazier will conduct funeral services on Wednesday, July 23 at 1 p.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will follow in Hatton Cemetery in Prichard, W.Va.

Charles Robert Thacker Sr., 87, of McDermott, Ohio, died Monday at his home.
He was born May 3, 1921, in Greenup.
His wife, Anna Belle Pennington Thacker, survives.

Charlie Hall (1976-2008)
Charlie Steven Hall, 31, of Harold, died Saturday at his residence.
He was born July 30, 1976, in Pikeville.
His wife, Teresa Lynn Hall, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Little Rachel Regular Baptist Church in Galveston. Burial will be in Hall Family Cemetery in Galveston.
