John LeRoy Blair III - 1976-2008
John LeRoy Blair III, 31, of Pedro, Ohio, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Pedro.
He was born Nov. 17, 1976, in Ashland, Ky., a son of John L. Blair Jr. of Flatwoods, Ky., and Janet Kiser Blair of Ashland.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, Bill Scarberry.
He was a caregiver at Frazier Nursing Home and a member of 33rd Street Baptist Church in Ashland.
Additional survivors include his fianceé, Kathy McGuire of Pedro; a son, Chase Orndorff of Florida; a daughter, Cheynne Gard of Pedro; his maternal grandmother, Sue McDowell of Ashland; two stepdaughters, Kay and Amanda McGuire of Pedro; a brother, Michael B. Blair of Ashland; uncles Butch Scarberry, Georgie Triplett, Clarence and Harold Blair and Darrell McDowell; and aunts Bobbie Young, Julie Meeks and Delores Miles.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Dr. Phillip Haney. Burial will be in Catlettsburg Cemetery.

Louise Pferdehirt Houck - 1911-2008
Louise Pferdehirt Houck, 97, of Lexington, Ky., died July 17, 2008, in Lexington.
She was born Jan. 5, 1911, in Clarksburg, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ernest and Ethel Willis Pferdehirt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carlton E. Houck.
She was a retired public schoolteacher and taught at Russell Middle School in Russell, Ky. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Flatwoods, Ky., the NEA, KEA and REA and was a former choir director.
Surviving are daughters Janice and Warren Allnatt Houck of Louisville, Ky., and Beth McLaughlin (Phillip) of Lexington; a sister, Lillian Sheldon of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Phillip McLaughlin II, John Massey, Christy Allnatt Brockman and Leslie Allnatt Mallory; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Burial will be in Ridge Lawn Cemetery in Mercerville, Ohio.

Russell Carlton “Carl” Wilburn - 1924-2008
Russell Carlton “Carl” Wilburn, 83, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Dayton, Ohio.
He was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Carter County, a son of the late Jacob and Jessie Callihan Wilburn.
He was retired from the Army and Civil Service, was a World War II Korean veteran and a member of the VFW and Disabled Veterans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Everman Wilburn; a daughter, Heidi Prelitz; three brothers, William “Bill,” Earl and George Harold Wilburn; and two sisters, Faye O’Dell and Janice Carter.
His survivors include two sons, Wade (Donna) Wilburn of Grayson and Jadd (Charlene) Wilburn of Chula Vista, Calif.; a daughter, Cassie (Mark) Barnes of Madison, Ala.; two stepsons, James (Debbie) Everman of Grayson and Tyrone (Alice) Everman of Gulfport, Miss.; a sister, Helen LeMaster of Hitchins, Ky.; grandchildren Jessica (Aaron) Tackett, Erica (Jamie) Roe, Tayler (Megan) Wilburn, Jadd R. (Geneve) Wilburn, Sarah Everman, Tracy Everman and Scott Everman; and great-grandchildren Jesse Wilburn, Jade Wilburn, Whitley Tackett, Ashley Roe, Skylar Sexton, Tyler Wilburn and Jadd Russell Wilburn Jr.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, July 19, 2008, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Tim Carper, minister. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Graveside military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army from Fort Knox, Ky.

Betty Smith, 83, of Ashland, died Friday in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.

Elizabeth Smith - 1916-2008
Elizabeth Tackett Smith, 92, of Catlettsburg, died Thursday in Boyd Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 27, 1916, in Carter County.
Her husband, Sgt. Earl Smith, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at noon Monday at Rose Hill Mausoleum.
There will be no visitation.
Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Silas Showalter - 1929-2008
Silas C. Showalter, 79, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, died Wednesday in Mount Carmel Hospital East in Columbus, Ohio.
He was born July 4, 1929, in Ross County, Ohio.
His wife, Izane Peters Showalter, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery in Greenup.

Dixie M. Cordle, 88, of Blaine, died Thursday in J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center in Louisa.
She was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Blaine.
Her husband, M.J. Cordle Jr., survives.
