Ethel F. Thornbury - 1932-2008
Ethel F. Thornbury, 76, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2008.
She was born Ethel Frances Huntington on April 15, 1932, in Warren County, Ohio, a daughter of the late Almond C. and Bessie Pearl Deatley Huntington.
In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Thornbury, and two brothers, Anthony A. Huntington and Clifford Huntington.
She valued education and was a retired English teacher in the Boyd County School District and at Rose Hill Christian School. She was a longtime member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters Kathy McLain, Sharon Noble, Vicki Ellis (Tony) and Becky Garvin (Ralph), all of Ashland, and Janie Sampson (Bill) of Frankfort, Ky.; brother Blanchard Junior Frost (Lucille) of Waverly, Ohio; sister Betty Jane Hood of Sugar Hill, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Andee McGuire (Jason), Chip McLain, Brandon Noble, Charlie Cox, Raegan Graham (Danny) and Valerie Ellis, all of Lexington, Ky., Megan Nolen (Chris) of Rush, Ky., Chad Cox (Katie), serving a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force, Lauren Ellis of Ashland, Ky., and Lindsay McClave (Rickey), stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Calif.; three great-grandchildren T.R. Nolen, Alissa Nolen and Carter McGuire; and several nieces, nephews and many friends she loved.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Ronnie Mayes and the Rev. Charles E. Stewart. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the funeral home.

Edward Alexander - 1942-2008
Edward O. Alexander, 65, of Interlachen, Fla., formerly of Rush, Ky., passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, at his residence in Florida.
Mr. Alexander was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Rush, Ky., a son of Inez Griffin Alexander of Ashland and the late Russell Alexander. He was a graduate of Boyd County High School, served our nation proudly and honorably during the Vietnam War with the United States Army and retired after 25 years from the block manufacturing industry.
He is survived by his loving family — three children, Melissa Alexander, Julie Alexander and Jackie Alexander, all of Lancaster, Ohio; two brothers, David Alexander and his wife, Margaret, of Satsuma, Fla., and Ron Alexander and his wife, Cidney, of Ashland; and a very special granddaughter, Samantha Winland.
A graveside service for Edward Alexander will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Mike Rice. Military honors will be presented by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, W.Va.

Donetta Conley - 1967-2008
Donetta Ann Williams Conley of Catlettsburg, surrounded by her loving family, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at her home.
Mrs. Conley was 40 years of age, born Nov. 9, 1967, in Ashland, Ky., the daughter of Donald and Margaret Hollingsworth Williams of Westwood. She was a graduate of the Fairview High School Class of 1986, a cashier at the Cannonsburg Wal-Mart for 10 years and attended Laurel Gap Baptist Church.
Always with a smile, Donetta could light up a room with her presence and spirit.
Along with her parents, sadly left behind to remember Donetta are her husband of 14 years, Timothy Conley; a son, Christopher Joseph (Christy) Williams of Catlettsburg; her adoring grandmother, Mildred Hollingsworth Childers; a brother, Aaron (Missy) Williams of Ashland; a sister, Melissa (Ryan) Kirkland of Westwood; uncles Bill (Patty) Williams of Russell and Randy (Vicki) Hollingsworth of Westwood; aunts Sandy (Fred) Fry of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sharon (Joe) Cantrell of Ashland and Kathy Colm of Westwood; a special cousin, Tammy Cantrell Shortridge of Catlettsburg; a host of nieces, nephews and extended family; and her little furry companions, Mitzy and Gretchen.
A funeral service in remembrance of Donetta Conley will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Ironville Enterprise Baptist Church. Pastor J.C. Caudill will offer a message of comfort and a heartfelt eulogy will be given by Pastor Jack Salyers. Final rest will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.
Serving as casketbearers will be David Conley, Mark Conley, Michael Conley, Justin Hollingsworth, Kyle Hollingsworth and Joe Cantrell.
Those wishing to call on the Conley family may do so between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m. today at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg and an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Russell Carlton “Carl” Wilburn - 1942-2008
Russell Carlton “Carl” Wilburn, 83, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Dayton, Ohio.
He was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Carter County, a son of the late Jacob and Jessie Callihan Wilburn.
He was retired from the Army and Civil Service, was a World War II Korean veteran and a member of the VFW and Disabled Veterans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Everman Wilburn; a daughter, Heidi Prelitz; three brothers, William “Bill,” Earl and George Harold Wilburn; and two sisters, Faye O’Dell and Janice Carter.
His survivors include two sons, Wade (Donna) Wilburn of Grayson and Jadd (Charlene) Wilburn of Chula Vista, Calif.; a daughter, Cassie (Mark) Barnes of Madison, Ala.; two stepsons, James (Debbie) Everman of Grayson and Tyrone (Alice) Everman of Gulfport, Miss.; a sister, Helen LeMaster of Hitchins, Ky.; grandchildren Jessica (Aaron) Tackett, Erica (Jamie) Roe, Tayler (Megan) Wilburn, Jadd R. (Geneve) Wilburn, Sarah Everman, Tracy Everman and Scott Everman; and great-grandchildren Jesse Wilburn, Jade Wilburn, Whitley Tackett, Ashley Roe, Skylar Sexton, Tyler Wilburn and Jadd Russell Wilburn Jr.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Tim Carper, minister. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, July 18 and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Graveside military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army from Fort Knox, Ky.

Clifford “Bicy” Lewis - 1947-2008
Clifford “Bicy” Lewis, 60, of Morehead, Ky., passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
He was born Oct. 28, 1947 in Elliott County, the son of the late Humphurs and Linnie Conn Lewis. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul William Lewis and Arnold Lewis.
Bicy was a carpenter, of the Baptist faith, a member of Ashland Carpenters Local 472 and an Army Vietnam veteran.
He is survived by a brother, Ricky and wife Debbie Lewis of Olive Hill, Ky.; a sister, Jeannie and husband Woody Flannery of Sandy Hook, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Amy Logan.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook by Brother Ricky Lewis and Brother Tim Lewis. Burial will be in Lewis Cemetery.

Miriam Sperry Stephens Burton - 1935-2008
Miriam Sperry Stephens Burton, 72, of Sharkey, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2008, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 6, 1935, in South Shore, Ky., to the late Roscoe Stephens and Nellie Margaret (Sperry) Stephens.
She was a graduate of Morehead State University and taught in the elementary grades for 27 years, retiring from the Rowan County School District in 1991. She also taught in the Greenup and Boyd County districts. She was a dedicated teacher, receiving awards too numerous to mention and touching countless students’ lives in the process.
Known for her infectious laughter and commitment to God, Miriam was a member of Gearheart Community Church, which her husband founded and where he pastored until his death.
Miriam was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, the Rev. Ivis Leon Burton; two sons, Stephen Leon Burton and Timothy Paul Burton; her parents; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Kilgore.
She is survived by a sister, Lenore Shipley of Bonifay, Fla.; a brother, Edward Stephens of Maloneton; many nieces and nephews; and a daughter, Elizabeth Grace Burton of Morehead, who was the light of her life.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, in the chapel of Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home in Morehead by the Rev. James E. Wiley of Cincinnati. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be William Shipley, Creighton Stephens, Jason Conley, Jon Stephens, Blane Kissick and David Johnson.

Infant Lori Beth Gamble, daughter of Frank and Heather S. Gamble, was stillborn Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oldfield Cemetery.

Silas C. Showalter, 79, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, died Wednesday in Mount Carmel East in Columbus, Ohio.

Reneca Bradley - 1949-2008
Reneca Renia Bradley, 58, of Louisa, died Wednesday in Cabell Huntington Hospital.
She was born Nov. 9, 1949, in Sandusky, Ohio.
Her husband, Eddie Bill Bradley, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Bryant Cemetery at Charley.

Virginia Chaney Howard, 66, of Quincy, died Thursday in Meadowview Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 9, 1941, in Lewis County.

Mary Alice Wilson, 87, of Franklin Furnace, died Wednesday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.
She was born April 24, 1921, in Raceland, Ky.
She was preceded in death by husbands Edgar Elswick and Ogle Wilson.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Hecla Cemetery.
