Gregory Tackett - 1955-2008
Gregory Tackett, 52, of Boyd County, died tragically, Monday afternoon, in a tractor accident in Lawrence County, Ky.
Greg was born Nov. 23, 1955, in Pikeville, Ky., a son of Ola and Sarah Slone Tackett of Boyd County.
He was a former maintenance and melt shop employee with 28 years service at Kentucky Electric Steel. He was a member of the Laborers Local #1445 of Ashland, Ky., and was employed in the maintenance department at AK Steel. Greg was a Christian and loved the outdoors, hunting and gardening. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be sadly missed.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Paula Caudill Tackett; a son, Jason Tackett and wife, Jessica, of Lawrence County; a daughter, Amanda Bond and husband, Tommy, of Boyd County, Ky.; three grandchildren, Dylan and McKenzie Bond, and Jaycee Tackett, and one on the way; one brother, Ola Tackett Jr. and one sister, Debbie Tackett, both of Boyd County; and three nephews and a niece.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Darrell Kidd and Brother Foster Akers. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visitation is tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.

James L. Thompson - 1946-2008
James L. Thompson, age 61, of Russell, Ky., died Monday, July 14, 2008 in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 7, 1946, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Fitch and Dixie Riffe Thompson.
He was an employee of AK Steel and a Vietnam Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Maggard Thompson of Russell; two sons, Adam Thompson of Russell, Ky., and Jimmy Thompson of Mansfield, Ohio; two brothers, Woody Thompson of Huntington, W.Va., and Ted Vanhorn of Ironton; two sisters, Pam Thompson and Ruth Rosebrough, both of Ironton; and two grandsons.
The funeral will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. A private committal service will be Friday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Carole Sue Bates Gillum - 1935-2008
Carole Sue Bates Gillum of Greenup County entered eternal rest after a long battle with cancer on July 7, 2008 with her loving family at her bedside.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Laudie and Marie (Patton) Bates; sisters, Louise and Lucille Bates, Loretta McDonald and Lorraine Bates; and sons-in-law, Chess Carmen and Alan Regoski.
She is survived by her children, Tommy (Pam) Gillum, Jamie (Gary) Powell and Donna Regoski, all of Belleview, Fla., Jimmy Gillum, Anita Carmen and Debbie Gillum, all of Ocala, Fla.; sisters, Imogene Boyles of Worthington, Ky., and Kaye Whitt of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Ocala where Carole was a member for 32 years.
Carole will forever be in our hearts for the expressions of love and kindness she gave to family and friends. She will never be forgotten but sadly missed.
Fred E. Johnson
Fred E. Johnson died Nov. 19, 2007.
The memorial will be at noon July 19, 2008 at Rude Cemetery in Flatwoods, Ky.
His wife, Frances, and son, Larry, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his twin brother, Ned and 16 nieces and nephews.
Fred was a veteran of WWII and served in the Army of occupation in Germany. He was employed at Armco for 42 years and retired in 1978 as an open hearth melter.
Military rites will be given by V.F.W. 8850 Honor Guard.
John Donovan “Donnie” Tingler - 1967-2008
John Donovan “Donnie” Tingler, 40, of Raceland, Ky., passed away at his residence on July 14, 2008 surrounded by family and friends.
Mr. Tingler was born July 23, 1967, in Russell, Ky., a son of the late Sonjia Tingler Journey.
He was a salesperson, worked with bands for years and was a member of Howard Thomas Post in Raceland.
Surviving are his wife, Teresa Hatfield Tingler, who loved him more than words can say; two godsons, Jesse Boyle and Chris Butcher and two uncles, Matt Valance and Butch Tingler.
He was loved and will be sadly missed by lots of friends and his wife’s family, who loved him as their own.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky., by Steve Adams.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Evans Funeral Home in Raceland.
Ernie C. Perry - 1921-2008
Ernie C. Perry, 87, died on Monday, July 14, 2008 at his residence in Russell, Ky.
He was born on March 13, 1921, in Morgan County at Blaze, Ky., and was the son of the late Estill Lee and Gussie Patrick Perry. Mr. Perry was baptized many years ago and lived a Christian life. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Vona Cassity Perry; three brothers, Corbitt, Ollen and Arnold; and two sisters, Versie and Verlie.
Mr. Perry is survived by one son, Ernie Dale (Sharon) Perry of Russell; two daughters, Rita (Jim) Patrick of Kenova, W.Va., and Donna (Charles) Morgan of Maysville, Ky. Other survivors include five grandsons, Michael Perry, David (Gina) Perry, Charlie (Sonya) Patrick, Ross Morgan and Brad (Lindsay) Morgan; one granddaughter, Sarah (Dana) Smith; one great-grandson, Warren Smith; and three great-granddaughters, Carmen Smith, and Cassity and Isabella Patrick.
Additionally, he is survived by numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Perry served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938-1939. Afterwards, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1940 and served until December 1946. He served on the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Wasp CV-7 in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and South Pacific and survived the sinking of this ship at Guadalcanal in September 1942. Afterwards, he went aboard the newly commissioned Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Princeton CVL-23 serving in Task Force 58 during nine South Pacific battles and survived the sinking of this ship at Leyte Gulf in October 1944. During his Navy service, he earned 12 Battle Stars. He was also at the two Bikini Atoll Atomic Bomb tests in 1946. After his Navy service, he came home to Morgan County, Ky., prior to moving to Greenup County in 1952. He worked at Allied Chemical in South Point, Ohio, until the plant closed. He returned to his love of farming and caring for the land.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers for their care and acts of kindness during his extended illness.
Funeral services will be conducted by Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland with minister David Roach officiating. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Preston Family Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Cassity Cemetery Fund.

Lula Alice Hart Burns
Lula Alice Hart Burns, 80, of Buzzard Roost, Garrison, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at her residence.
She was born in Greenup County, a daughter of the late Harry Hart and Effie Meadows Hart.
She was a mother, grandmother, housewife and a member of the Brushart Freewill Baptist Church in Leatherwood, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Burns on Nov. 19, 1971 and one daughter, Glenda Horsley.
Surviving are two sons, Roger Burns and Carl R. Burns, both of Garrison; four daughters, Ruby Royster, Rita Horsley, Velma Rhoden and Lisa Royster, all of Garrison; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harry Hart of Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore with Pastor Gary Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery, Zion Ridge, Garrison.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Irene Spears - 1928-2008
Irene Spears is now walking the streets of gold with our Heavenly Father after a long illness. She passed away Tuesday morning in the arms of her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, Arville Spears.
She leaves behind her daughter, Nancy Wheeler and her husband, Mont; a grandson, David Wheeler and wife, Tracy Wheeler and two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Savannah. Also surviving are a brother, Norman Pack and two sisters, Wilma “Toots” Ryland and Phyllis Shannon.
Irene was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Louisa to Hubert and Lucy Parks Pack. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Whiten and Neval Pack.
Together with her husband, they ran the “Kiddie Korner” for 49 years, feeding countless school children. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Gay, W.Va.
Irene will be greatly missed by her loving family, her good friends and her church family.
Those wishing to call on the family may do so at Young Funeral Home Chapel in Louisa, Ky., from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
A celebration of her life will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Edna Royster
Edna Royster, 76, of Garrison, died Tuesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.
Billy Castle Jr. - 1958-2008
Billy James Castle Jr., 50, of Thealka, died Monday at his residence.
He was born Feb. 20, 1958, in Marion, Ohio.
His wife, Brenda Kay Hicks Castle, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Castle family cemetery in Thealka.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. tonight and until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appalachian Hospice Care.
Hargus “Press” Hughes - 1923-2008
Hargus Preston “Press” Hughes, 85, of Prestonsburg, died Tuesday at his residence.
He was born June 11, 1923.
His wife, Mary Ruth Conley Hughes, preceded him in death.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Carter Funeral Home in Prestonsburg. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel.
