Ambrose Johnson - 1922-2008
Ambrose Johnson, 86, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday morning, July 8, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Mr. Johnson was born March 8, 1922, in Rush, Ky., a son of the late Will and Annie Ball Johnson.
He was also preceded in death by brothers Edward Johnson and Bobby Jack Johnson and sisters Esta Unrue, Jessie Rady, Rosa Barber, Jean Withrow, Frances Pennington and Catherine Bostick.
He was a construction worker and laborer and retired from the city of Ashland. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of Local 1445 and a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his loving wife of 49 years, Jane “Polly” Salyers Johnson of Ashland; sons Roger Johnson and wife Rita of Catlettsburg, Ky., Bill Reffitt of Mableton, Ga., James Robert Johnson of Ashland and Kenneth Reffitt and companion Marynell Vanover of Plain City, Ohio; a brother, Bill Johnson of Ironton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by two loving daughters-in-law, Wendy Reffitt and Susan Reffitt, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Larry Riley.
Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Margaret B. Huff Porter - 1931-2008
Margaret Brewer Huff Porter, 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday evening in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Fred and Nellie Horne Brewer. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis E. Huff, in 1957; two sons, Rick and Ralph E. Huff; and six brothers and sisters.
Surviving are three sons, Michael Huff (Judy) of South Point, Ohio, Danny Brewer of Dayton, Ohio, and Virgil Porter Jr. (Billie Jean) of Ashland; five daughters, Vicki Whitt (James) and Rebecca Jo Ann Branham, both of Greenup, Ky., Gail Brewer of Ashland and Margaret Teressa Johnson and Rachael Christine Litteral (John), both of Westwood, Ky.; four brothers, Gartrell Chandler of Grayson, Ky., Bob Brewer of Marion, Ohio, Charles Brewer of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Fred Brewer of Ashland; two sisters, Helen Yoder of Ashland and Ailene Comer of Coal Grove, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and several great- grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, July 10 at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. Donald Comer. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery.

Wanda May Mastin - 1929-2008
Wanda May Mastin, 79, of Ashland, Ky., died July 9, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Mastin was born May 30, 1929, in Cincinnati, Ohio, a daughter of the late Raymond and Ruth Shofstall Flynn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Mastin, in 1999.
She was a homemaker and a member of Princess Church of Christ.
Surviving are a son, Gary L. Mastin and wife Candice of Cannonsburg, Ky.; daughters Rita Mastin Stephens and husband Perry of Summit and Alesa A. Mastin of Meads; sisters Patricia LaBare of Latonia, Ky., and Marilyn Hedgecock of Denver, Colo.; and grandchildren Amanda Mastin, Kristin Mastin, Kelli Mastin and Kaitlyn Stephens.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Jerry Morris, minister. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Carl Edward Gilliam - 1924-2008
Carl Edward Gilliam, 84, of Flatwoods, Ky., died July 9, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 13, 1924, in Jenkins, Ky., a son of the late John Norman and Clora Blanton Gilliam.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Rowe “Tootsie” Gilliam; brothers Hassel Ervin Gilliam and John Norman Gilliam and sisters Maxine Gilliam and Phyllis May Branham.
He was a retired engineer with C&O Railroad and a member of Advance Memorial United Methodist Church, Disabled American Veterans and the Brotherhood of Engineers. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran of three years.
Surviving are daughters Colleen Harper of Ocala, Fla., Gilda Hill of Lexington, Ky., Deidra Fajack of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Deneen Zimmerman of Villa Hills, Ky.; a son, Mark Coleman of Pikeville, Ky.; brothers Kermit Gilliam of Ashland, Paul Homer Gilliam of Flatwoods and Ralph Russell Gilliam of Flatwoods; sisters Phyllis Brown of Flatwoods, Mary L. Gilliam Donta of Wurtland, Ky., and Janice M. Ratliff of Lloyd, Ky.; and nine grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by the Rev. Don Young.
Private visitation (family only) will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods.

Frank Fortune - 1930-2008
Frank Lee Fortune, 77, of Russell, widower of Martha Cordle Fortune, died Thursday at his residence.
Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.
Buford Bowman
Buford Bowman, 85, of Wellington, died Monday at his residence.
His wife, Annis Cox Bowman, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Pomeroyton Union Church. Burial will be in Pomeroyton Cemetery.
Friends may call after noon today at the church.
Menifee Home for Funerals in Frenchburg is in charge of arrangements.
Alichia Ratliff - 1916-2008
Alichia Sammons Ratliff, 91, of Marion, Ohio, formerly of Louisa, died Tuesday in Heartland of Marion Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Cassie, W.Va.
Her husband, Earl Ratliff, died in 2001.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Young Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Fluty Lick Cemetery in Louisa.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Aileen Mullins
Aileen Blackburn Collins Mullins, 76, of Langley, died Tuesday at her residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rockfork Regular Baptist Church in Garrett. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery in Garrett.

Thelma Colvin - 1927-2008
Thelma Colvin, 80, of Ironton, died Tuesday in Jo Lin Health Center in Ironton.
She was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Lawrence County.
Her husband, Casey Colvin Sr., preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton and an hour before services Friday at the church.
Garland Barnett - 1952-2008
Garland Wayne Barnett, 55, of Pedro, died Monday at his residence.
He was born Sept. 27, 1952, in Ironton.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vernon Furnace Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
