Janice Menshouse (1936-2008)

Janice M. Menshouse, 71, of Kitts Hill, Ohio, died Friday, July 4, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born Nov. 21, 1936, in Ashland, daughter of the late Cecil C. and Clara McGraw Miller. Her husband, Gary Richard Menshouse, died in 2002. She was of the Baptist faith and a devoted homemaker.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ishmael Miller and Gary Miller; and two sisters, Jean Dolen and Nancy Haney.

Survivors include a son, Wesley J. Menshouse and wife Lecia of Kitts Hill; a daughter, Teresa J. Elliott and husband Curt of Scottown, Ohio; three brothers, Bill Miller, Darrell Miller and Ricky Miller, all of Ashland; three sisters, Gail Hale of Ashland, Brenda Dye of Flatwoods and Yvonne Kellogg of Haverhill, Ohio; four grandchildren, Marlena D. Durst, Joseph R. Pinkerman, Wesley Taylor Menshouse and Morgan Ryan Menshouse; two stepgrandsons, Jarod and Jacob Bruce; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home- Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, with Pastor David Lambert officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Kathleen Southers (1927-2008)

Kathleen “Kitty” Southers, 81, of Ashland, died Friday, July 4, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

She was born June 8, 1927, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Henry and Lula Perry Lewis. She was the wife of Joseph Southers, who survives. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ashland and a former member of the Ashland Road Runners Club and Eastern Star. She was retired from the accounting department of The Daily Independent.

Survivors include two daughters, Joleen Hotchkiss of Georgia and Lee Ann Groce of Micco, Fla.; a special friend, Polly Judd of Ashland; two grandchildren, Erin Lee Hotchkiss and Michael Hotchkiss; and a great-grandchild, Caleb.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Harold Moore.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Friends may make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of Ashland, 1701 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Gloria Stewart (1948-2008)

Gloria J. Stewart, 59, of Greenup, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

She was born Dec. 16, 1948, the daughter of the late Newton and Mildred Barber Gillium. She was the wife of Claude Stewart Jr., who survives. She was a lab supervisor at King’s Daughters Medical Center and a member of Chinns Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include s son, Kenneth Stewart of Greenup, and two grandchildren.

Funeral for family only will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Danny Kelly. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery in Greenup County.

Visitation for family only will be after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.



Charles Sparks (1934-2008)

Charles Lee Sparks, 74, of Hitchins, died Friday, July 4, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born June 20, 1934, in Hitchins, a son of the late William Gene and Fannie Barker Sparks. He was the husband of the late Reva Jay Berry Sparks. He was retired from Big Run Coal and Clay Co. and a former employee of Ashplundt.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Billy Frank Sparks and Eugene Sparks; three sisters, Kathrine Seagraves, Irene Suttles and Vadie Sparks; and four brothers, Bill, John L., Bob and James Sparks.

Survivors include four daughters, Kaye (Ronnie) Wells of Hitchins, Mary (Bazil) Gollihue of Denton and Sue (William) Bailey and Linda (Roger Horton) Lucas, both of Grayson; three sons, Charles (Vickie) Sparks, Sammy Joseph Sparks and Adam (Susie) Sparks, all of Hitchins; a brother, George Sparks of Irvine; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Delmar Rogers. Burial will be in the Berry-Sparks Family Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Goldie Fannin (1922-2008)

Mrs. Goldie Weaver Goodwin Fannin, 85, of Lewis County, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, July 4, 2008, at the residence of her daughter.

Mrs. Fannin was born Aug. 18, 1922, at Camp Dix, a daughter of the late Conner and Bertha Horsley Goodwin.

Goldie was a homemaker and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor and friend to all who knew her. She was a Christian and a faithful member of Scott’s Branch Church of Christ. The center of her entire life was her love and service to the Lord Jesus Christ. She was well known for her optimistic view of life. Her genuine caring attitude was felt by all those who knew her. She gave hope and encouragement, always seeing the best in people and helping them to realize how special they are in God’s sight. Her strength, love and admirable example are an inspiration to her family and friends. This legacy of love will long live through the generations that follow her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Kaye Jordan; a grandson, Jonathan Kent Thornsberry; three brothers, Homer Goodwin, Leo Goodwin and George Goodwin; and a sister, Gladys Curden.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Fannin, whom she married Sep. 7, 1942; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Wayne and Sue Fannin of Camp Dix; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne and Maurice Reeder of Camp Dix and Mary and Rick Thornsberry of Corbin; a son-in-law, Kermit Jordan of Vanceburg; 12 grandchildren, Darrel Fannin, Janie Zornes, Billy Fannin, Chris Jordan, Michelle Carroll, Greta Douthat, Randy Reeder, Natalie Elam, Derrick Reeder, Jeremy Thornsberry, Adam Thornsberry and Maggie Todd; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Otha Goodwin and Lovell Goodwin, both of Ashland; two sisters, Esther Crisp of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Dorothy Kelly of North Kingsville, Ohio. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members, church family and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, at Scott’s Branch Church of Christ in Lewis County by Brother Ronald Lindeman. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery in Lewis County.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Globe Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

Her devoted grandsons will serve as pallbearers. They are Darrel Fannin, Randy Reeder, Adam Thornsberry, Billy Fannin, Derrick Reeder, Chris Jordan and Jeremy Thornsberry.



Betty VanHorn (1938-2008)

Betty Lou VanHorn, 69, of Louisa, went to be with the Lord on July 4, 2008, following a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 19, 1938, in Webbville, the daughter of the late Dan and Madge Roberts Cox.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Ray and James Edward Cox, and a granddaughter, Stacy Michelle Chaffin.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Ira G. VanHorn; a son, Edward Pete (Darlene) VanHorn of Louisa; six daughters Sandra (Ben) Burchett of Webbville, Vicki (Gary) Webb, Marsha (Tracy) Chaffin, Teresa (Lonnie) Senters and Kimberly (Derek) Salyers, all of Louisa, and Linda (Mike) Barnwell of Rush; a brother, Jackie L. (Denise) Cox of Webbville; four sisters, Joy (Robert) Williams of Cannonsburg, Kaye (David) McDavid and Dinah (Rick) Bustetter, both of Grayson, and Charlotte Thompson of Ashland; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a host of family, friends and neighbors.

The Rev. Ralph Hogston, the Rev. Noah Wilks and Brother Ronnie Workman will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa.

Burial will be in VanHorn Family Cemetery in Louisa.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Brenda Wilson (1960-2008)

Brenda Nolan Donta Wilson, 47, died Thursday in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

She was born Aug. 16, 1960, in Ashland.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg, where there will be a memorial service at 7 p.m.



John Kitchen

John Kitchen, 71, of Grayson, died Saturday at the residence of his son in Grayson.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook.



David Shope (1954-2008)

David Wayne Shope, 54, of Vanceburg, died Friday at the home of his son in Vanceburg.

He was born April 25, 1954, in Lewis County.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gaydos Funeral home in Vanceburg. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and after 8 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.



Nancy Conn (1952-2008)

Nancy Sue Conn, 56, of Coal Grove, died Friday.

She was born June 6, 1952, in Portsmouth.

Her husband, Bill Conn, survives.

Graveside services will be at noon Tuesday at Conn-Malone Family Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Contributions may be sent to the Ashland-Bellefonte Cancer Center, 122 St. Christopher Drive, Ashland, KY 41101.

Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton is in charge of arrangements.
