James Cassell (1946-2009)

James Edward Cassell, 63, of Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of Ashland, died Friday. He was born Jan. 20, 1946, in Frankfort, son of the late Edward and Mary Cassell. He was the husband of Patricia Cassell, who survives. He was a golf course manager of the Punta Gorda Golf Course and a former Ashland police officer. He was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge 350 BPOE; the Moose Lodge 892; Ashland Eagles Club and the Lawrence County York Rite Association and he was a former member of the Indra Consistory Valley of Covington Scottish Rite and the El Hasa Shrine Temple.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert E. Cassell of Ironton, Ohio.

Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Melvin Cemetery in Deering, with a service by officers and members of the Elks Lodge 350 and Masonic services by officers and members of the Fred M. Gross Lodge 953 F&AM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in James memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, Ky. 40502-1204.

Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood is in charge of the arrangements.



Matthew Loudenback (1976-2009)

Matthew Allen Loudenback, 33, of Ashland died Thursday morning at his residence following a brief illness. Matthew was born Feb. 4, 1976, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of John Loudenback (Kathy) and Vicki Stapleton Crites (Bob) of Ashland. He was a self-employed contractor and enjoyed hunting and spending his time in the outdoors.

Matthew was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ruth Stapleton; and his paternal grandparents, Leroy and Juanita Loudenback.

Survivors, in addition to his parents include one son, Tyler Loudenback of Grayson; one daughter, Brandi Loudenback of Grayson; three stepsisters, Angela McGinnis (Ron) of Summitt, Jennifer Crites of Ironton and Christina Crites (John Felkin) of Dayton, Ohio; grandparents, Bill and Marcella Stapleton of Flatwoods; and the special family that helped raise him, Mike and Kathy Kazee.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2007, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Jim Pridemore. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery in Grahn.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service time on Tuesday.

Joseph Easton (1954-2009)

Joseph William Easton, 54, of Ashland died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug. 13, 1954, in Maysville, the son of the late Charles D. and Elizabeth N. Wells Easton. He was retired from Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 248 and was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Survivors include one son, Jason Easton of Ashland; two brothers, James (Rebecca) Easton of Ashland and Raymond (Kim) Easton of New Orleans, La.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. Ike Nicholson officiating.

Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.



Brenda Kay Hagans (1943-2009)

Brenda Kay Yates Hagans, 66, of Ashland, formerly of Martin, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was born March 24, 1943, in Martin, the daughter of the late Gus Yates and Birchie Garrison Yates Kilburn. She was the wife of Glenford “Alan” Hagans, who survives. She was a homemaker and was a devout Christian.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Yates and a sister, Bill Collins.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Randy F. and Lynn Hagans of Prestonsburg and David A. Hagans of Illinois; one daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and John Bowen of Ashland; four grandchildren, Kala Colburn, Rajeana Bowen, Zachary Bowen and Sara Bowen; one great-granddaughter, Emmalee Grace Colburn; five brothers, Danny Yates and Mike Yates, both of Floyd County, Tim Yates of Lewis County, Gene Yates of Jackson, Ohio, and Donald Yates of Morehead; and three sisters, Linda Sue Blevins of Fayette County, and Shirl “Trudy” Tackett and “Sockie” Hall, both of Floyd County.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland, with Pastors Frank Hulett, Randy Hagans and Johnny Haney officiating. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery.

Visitation will be after noon Monday at the funeral home.

Faye Clevenger (1951-2009)

Faye Farmer Clevenger, 57, of Catlettsburg, departed to be in the presence of her heavenly Father on July 2, 2009.

She was born on Aug. 26, 1951, in Switzer, W.Va., to Thomas Fred Farmer and the late Ina Duncan Farmer.

Faye is survived by her devoted husband of 28 years, Mike Clevenger; loving daughter, Ashley Clevenger of Catlettsburg; admiring stepdaughter, Heather (Scott) Runyon of Ashland; proud stepson, Michael (Diane) Clevenger of Azore Islands; sisters, Dianne (Grant) Goodson of Destin, Fla., Beverly (Butch) Baldridge of Russell and Rita (Greg) Wells of Raceland; a brother, Gene (Helen) Bush of Raceland; grandchildren, Samantha, Michael and Daniel Clevenger, and Seth, Tanner and Sydney Runyon; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Faye, a 1969 graduate of Raceland High School, furthered her education by obtaining an associate degree at King’s Daughters School of Nursing, a Bachelors of Science in nursing at Marshall University and a Masters of Science in nursing at West Virginia University. Faye was a committed nurse for 30 years. She was a beloved professor at St. Mary’s School of Nursing/Marshall University, where she taught cardiology and endocrinology for 26 years. During this time, she diligently planned and organized cardiac healthcare with St. Mary’s Heart Association, the State Health Department and the Center for Disease Control.

Not only did she have a passion for helping others through her nursing career, but she also was dedicated to serving the Lord. She was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church where she was a part of the Loyal Followers and the hand bell ministry. Faye enjoyed spending time with the Lord in her daily devotionals where she found strength, hope and encouragement.

Faye loved to read, cook, travel, spend time outdoors and recently found a new passion for painting. She found joy in spending time with her family and loving friends, to whom she was a true inspiration. Faye’s optimistic attitude, unrelenting strength and endearing nature will be missed by those she touched throughout her life.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Russell First Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate Faye’s life will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Russell First Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Gowin. Services will conclude at Golden Oaks Cemetery in Catlettsburg.

Elizabeth Bickel (1920-2009)

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bickel, 89, of East Tygart Road, Greenup went to be with her Lord on Friday, July 3, 2009, in Wurtland Health Care Center in Wurtland. She was born in Warnock on Jan. 20, 1920, a daughter of the late James and Nettie Frazier Potter. She was the wife of Simon Elmore Bickel Jr. who preceded her in death on March 2, 2000. They were married in January of 1968. She was a homemaker and a member of the Globe Church of Christ on East Tygart Road in Greenup for 70 years.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, James Homer Potter, Samuel Ervin Potter and Paul Ralph Potter; and two sisters, Mae Nickel and Myrtle Burke.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins; and also several nieces and nephews in the Bickel family.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore with Bernie Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Warnock Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.



Bertha Nickell (1912-2009)

Bertha Heaberlin Nickell, 96, of Wurtland died Friday, July 3, 2009, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell. She was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Wurtland, the daughter of the late Jasper M. and Myrtle Mowery Heaberlin. She was the wife of the late Coleman Nickell. She was a charter member of Wurtland United Methodist Church, where she worked with the youth and held state offices with the United Methodist Women. She was a graduate of Union College and was a retired school teacher with the Russell School System, where she taught mostly at McDowell Elementary. She was a member of the Lioness Club and the Greenup County Homemakers Club.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Nickell; and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James Heyward and Shirley Nickell of Winchester and John and Louann Nickell of South Shore; one brother, the Rev. Thomas Heaberlin; seven grandchildren, Jason Nickell, Suzannah Nickell, Kim Fields, Robert Blake II, Gina Vance, Tracee McCoy and Randy (Lindsay) Hammond; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with the Rev. Thomas Heaberlin and Lt. Col. Vance Huston officiating. Burial will be in Heaberlin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Cassity (1944-2009)

Dorothy Jane Williams Wright Cassity, 65, of Clearfield passed away July 3, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. She was born May 18, 1944, in Morgan County, the daughter of the late Homer Williams and Irene Sluss Williams Wright.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Arthur Wright; one brother, James Wright; one daughter, Linda Lou Caskey and a son at birth.

Dorothy was a homemaker, a loving wife, and loving and devoted mother of 13 children.

Survivors include her loving husband, Luster Cassity; children, Karen Tackett (Mike); Regina Elaine Keeton, Evelyn Joyce Cassity; Mary Lou Meek all of Paintsville, Luster Wayne Cassity of Maysville, Elwood Scott Cantrell, Crystal Jane Sargent (Tim), Cindy Kay Moore (Bobby), Jessica Irene Wallace (James) and Sally May Caskey (David) all of Morehead, Yvonne June Vernatter (Bobby) of Olive Hill and Rebecca Eddie Weaver (Dewayne) of Wallingford; she was a loving grandmother to 29 grandkids and 18 great-grandkids; and also surviving is a sister, Anna Lou Perry.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Patty Fultz

Patty Lou Black Fultz, 72, of Ashland passed away Saturday at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Arrangements are pending at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola St. in Catlettsburg.



Thomas Reynolds (1939-2009)

Thomas Edward Reynolds, 69, of Sunset Nursing Home in Coal Grove died Saturday at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born Aug. 4, 1939, in Davella, Ky.

A private family service will take place with burial in the family cemetery.



William Plummer (1925-2009)

William Marshall Plummer, 84, of South Shore died Friday at his home.

He was born Sept. 19, 1925.

His wife, Violet Bentley Plummer, survives.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Collier Memorial Gardens in South Portsmouth.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral Home.



Daisy DeBord (1920-2009)

Daisy DeBord, 89, of West Liberty died Friday at Morgan County Area Regional Hospital.

She was born May 6, 1920, in Burg.

Her husband Orville Lee DeBord, preceded her in death.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Potter Funeral Home Chapel in West Liberty. Burial will be in DeBord Family Cemetery on Wheel Rim Road in Hazel Green.
