Gene F. Irwin - 1931-2008
Gene F. Irwin, 77, of Ashland died Friday, June 27, 2008, at his residence. He was born June 25, 1931, in Ashland, the son of the late Barr Brady and Daisy Marie Kendall Irwin. He was the husband of Betty Cooksey Irwin, who survives.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ashland and a 1949 graduate of Ashland High School and also a graduate of the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science. He was a lifetime member of the Ashland Optimist Club, Poage Masonic Lodge 325 and the El Hasa Shrine. He was a funeral director and embalmer with the Steen Funeral Homes serving the community for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Chris Irwin of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Virginia Ann Roberts and husband, Franklin, of Wildwood, Mo., and Barbara Marie Hart and husband, Bob, of Ashland; and a sister-in-law, Thora Louise Cooksey.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home, Central Avenue Chapel, with the Revs. Gene Pillow and Troy Poff officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Ronald W. Thompson - 1937-2008
Ronald W. Thompson, 70, of Ashland died Friday, June 27, 2008, at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., following an extended illness. He was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Ashland, the son of the late Woodrow W. and Grace Nolte Thompson. He was the husband of Carolyn Thompson, who preceded him in death in 1983. He was a member of 13th Street Baptist Church and was a retired metallurgist at AK Steel.
Survivors include two sons, David Lee Thompson of Overland Park, Kansas, and Ronald Thompson Jr. of Ashland; one daughter, Ronda Howard and her husband, Charlie, of Salem, Ohio; one sister, Janie Thompson Wells of Ashland; and five grandchildren, Scott Wells, Reid Thompson, Kody Peterson, Sheldon Thompson and Chase Howard.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, with Pastor Tom Harding officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Friends may make contributions to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2311 Fortune Drive 102, Lexington, Ky. 40509.

Belva Sammons - 1949-2008
Belva Lynn Sammons, 58, of Morehead died Friday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. She was born Oct. 6, 1949, in Ashland, the daughter of Grant Sammons of Ashland and the late Barbara Jean Wright Sammons. She was a retired administrator and counselor for Morehead State University and was very active in Girl Scouts of America, served in numerous professional organizations and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morehead.
She also was preceded in death by a nephew, Robert Eric Sammons.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include three brothers, Guy Sammons of Ashland, Mike Sammons and his wife, Dorothy, of Cannonsburg and Stanley Sammons and his wife, Karen, of Ashland; and a very dear friend, Debbie Reed of Morehead.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pollard Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Mantooth officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.
A memorial service for Belva will be held at a later date at First Baptist Church in Morehead.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Morehead, 123 E. Main Street, Morehead, Ky. 40351.
Charles D. Shelton - 1923-2008
Charles D. Shelton, 85, of South Point, Ohio, died Friday, June 27, 2008, in Jo-Lin Health Care Center in Ironton, Ohio. He was born March 20, 1923, in Boyd County, a son of the late Pete and Eva Grubb Shelton. He was the husband of Anna E. Nielson Shelton, who preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Army, Navy and retired from the Air Force after 30 years of service.
He also was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by one brother, Brady Shelton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home in Chesapeake, Ohio, with minister Earl Slack officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Bernice Graham - 1923-2008
Bernice Graham, 74, of Douglasville, Ga., formerly of Raceland, died Monday at Wellstar Hospital in Douglasville.
She was born Sept. 21, 1923.
Her husband Charlie Graham, survives.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the cemetery.
Evans Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of the arrangements.
Matthew Adkins - 1989-2008
Matthew Richard Adkins, 19, of Marysville, Ohio, died Friday in Marysville.
He was born March 25, 1989, in Louisa.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial will be in Tackett Cemetery in Greenup.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mary Lois Menix, 74, of Grayson died Saturday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Nola Penix - 1925-2008
Nola Fitch Penix, 83, of Paintsville died Friday at Mt. Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville.
She was born March 1, 1925, in Johnson County.
Her husband, Shady Lee Penix, survives.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Penix Family Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
John Salyer
John Wayne Salyer, 56, of Salyersville died Friday.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville.

John A. Williams - 1921-2008
John A. Williams, 87, of Ironton died Friday at a local health care center.
He was born March 14, 1921, in Wheeling, W.Va.
His wife, A. Rita Manger Williams, preceded him in death.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.
Visitation will be after noon Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton.

Shirley Fulks Maughan, 59, of Lakeside Village, Texas, died Friday at Kindred Hospital Southwest in Fort Worth, Texas.
She was born July 2, 1948, in Ironton, Ohio.
Her husband, A.L. Maughan, survives.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
