Phyllis J. Simpson
Phyllis J. Simpson of Ashland passed away on Wednesday evening, the 24th of June 2009, from complications following heart surgery.
Miss Simpson was a resident of Central, S.C., when she passed, but was born and lived most of her life in Ashland.
She is survived by her son, Charles Waters of Elizabethtown.
Miss Simpson lived a full life dedicated to bringing humor into the lives of all she met.
A service honoring her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the 2nd of July 2009, at Miller Funeral Home on Carter Avenue in Ashland.
Miss Simpson will be interred at Golden Oak Cemetery immediately following the service.
Robert Matthew Corey, Jr. - 1953-2009
Robert Matthew Corey Jr., 56, of Ashland died Friday, June 26, 2009, at Kings Daughters Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends, following a brief illness. He was born Feb. 4, 1953, in Ashland, a son of Robert Corey of Ashland and the late Lily Ruth Prater Corey. He was employed with Kingsbrook Life Care Center and attended Rockdale Freewill Baptist Church.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Teddy Joe Corey.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include one daughter, Christy Leigh Corey Mills of Ashland; three granddaughters, Alexandria Braiden Gould, Madison Elayne Gould and Rachael Elizabeth Gould, all of Ashland; one sister, Patricia Stapleton and husband Johny of Catlettsburg; two brothers, Rick Corey of Catlettsburg and Jeffrey Corey and wife Lauren of Troutman, N.C.; four nieces, Johnda Stapleton, Lauryn Corey, Piper Corey and Lauren Patrick; three nephews, Braxton Corey, Easton Corey and Logan Christopher; an ex-wife, Shirley Fadd; a special friend, Kathy Holbrook; and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Johny Stapleton, Rev. Joe Hutchinson and Rev. Terry Harris. Burial will be in the Bowling Cemetery in Catlettsburg.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Rick Corey, Jeffrey Corey and friends from Kingsbrook Life Care Center.

Catherine Jones - 1914-2009
Catherine Bergendahl (Katie) Jones, 95, of Martinsville, Va., formerly of Ashland, Lexington and Naples Fla., died quietly at home Wednesday, June 24, 2009. She was born in Roanoke, Va., on Aug. 18, 1914, to the late Oscar E. Bergendahl and Cora Emma Cuddy Bergendahl. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville.
Katie was the widow of William Edgar Jones and was also preceded in death by two sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Catharine J. Nelson and husband, Gary of Martinsville and Judith H. Johnston and husband, Phil of Louisville; one son, William Edgar Jones Jr. of LaGrange, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Lundy of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Elleen Cairy of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and one brother, Oscar E. Bergendahl Jr. of Erwin, Tenn.
According to her wishes she has been cremated and a family memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Patrick Henry Ave., Martinsville, VA 24112.

Minnie McGlone - 1919-2009
Minnie Eden McGlone, age 90, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday morning, June 27, 2009. She was born May 12, 1919, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Ora and Sadie Madden Eden Jessie. She was a Homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Olive Hill.
She also was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years; Homer McGlone; two brothers; Homer Jessie and Charles Jessie; six sisters; Malinda Durham, Mary Jessie, Cleo McDavid, Maudie Elkins, Georgia Simmerman and Mabel Wise; and one grandson; Paul Bailey.
Minnie is survived by one son; Billy Hugh McGlone of Olive Hill; one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Larry Bailey of Olive Hill; two grandchildren, Billy Michael and Jessica McGlone of Mt. Sterling and Amy Bailey Holton and Homer of Grayson, Kentucky; one granddaughter in-law, Fiona Bailey of Worthington; one great-granddaughter; Julia Applegate; four great-grandsons, Zachary Bailey, William Andrew McGlone and Quinten Alexander McGlone and Camron Flowers; one brother, Earl Jessie of Seymour, Ill.; one sister, Myrtle Thompson of Ingalls, Ind., and a host of other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Mark Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Olive Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday until the service hour Tuesday, at the funeral chapel.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Ralph W. Wheeler - 1921-2009
Ralph W. Wheeler, 87 of Ironton, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. The Ironton native was born August 16, 1921, the son of the late Alphonzo and Mollie Waddell Wheeler. He is preceded in death on Jan. 11, 2006 by his wife Harriett M. Blevins Wheeler, whom he married in 1944.
Mr. Wheeler attended Green Township Schools and was a Army World War II veteran. Mr. heeler retired in 1976 from AK Steel after 30 years. He also owned and operated Wheeler Appliance Repair for many years and was a member of the Franklin Furnace Independent Baptist Church. Also Mr. Wheeler was an avid bowler, fisherman and gardener.
He also was preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Greene Nolan and Elizabeth S. Jones; three brothers, Alfred Wheeler, James Wheeler and Russell Wheeler; three sisters, Mary Holman, Mae Otworth and Clara Sprouse; and a grandson, Jason Jones.
Survivors include two granddaughters, Michelle Allen of Ironton and Brittney McComis of Coal Grove; a grandson Scott Greene of Ironton; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at noon Monday, June 29, 2009, at Haverhill Cemetery with Pastor Dr. Dennis Hankins officiating. Military graveside rites will be performed by VFW Post 8850.

Jean Perry - 1940-2009
Jean Perry, 69, of Worthington died Tuesday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born March 19, 1940.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Vernon Robertson Jr. - 1971-2009
Vernon Lee Robertson Jr., 38, of Fort Gay died Friday in Fort Gay.
He was born Feb. 26, 1971, in Louisa.
His wife, Ida May Copley Robertson, survives.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Church in Paddle Creek, W.Va. Burial will be in the James “Jim” Robertson Cemetery in Paddle Creek.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today and until the service at the church.
Young Funeral Home in Louisa is in charge of the arrangements.
Sheila Kennard - 1948-2009
Sheila Faye Flanary Kennard, 61, of Flat Gap died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital Hospice Care Center.
She was born March 7, 1948 in Wise County, Va.
Her husband, Harry Kenneth Kennard, survives.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Keokee, Lee County, Va. Burial will be in Powell Valley Cemetery on Big Stone Gap in Wise County.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville.

Edna Morris - 1919-2009
Edna Morris, 89, of Ironton died Thursday at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Big Sandy.
Her husband, Lewis Morris, preceded her in death.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point.
There will be no visitation.
Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton is in charge of arrangements.
