Alvin Clyde “A.C.” Romans - 1937-2009
Alvin Clyde “A.C.” Romans, also lovingly known as Poppy, age 72 of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center on Pollard Road in Ashland.
He was born June 15, 1937, in Hopewell, Ky., Greenup County, a son of the late Clyde Washington Romans and Maudie Belle Stewart Romans.
In addition, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ersel, Ray and L.J. Romans; and two sisters, Clara Mae Emerson and Jean Romans.
He was a retired construction worker with Laborers Local No. 1445 with 43 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Ashland Elks Lodge BPOE No. 350.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Jean Gray Romans; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Daniel (Mariela) Romans of Surprise, Ariz., Wayne Romans of Ventura, Calif., Steven Romans of South Shore, Ky., and Robert Smedley and James (Stephanie) Smedley, both of Ashland; one daughter and son-in-law, Debi Mills Bradley (Danny) of Ashland; grandchildren, Elizabeth Mills, Aaron Romans, Felicia Mills, Drake Smedley, Atley Smedley, Quinton Romans, Brady Smedley, Kaitlyn Jones, Emily Mills, Shelby Smedley, Allie Jones and Bailee Smedley; one brother, Lovell Romans of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister, Evelyn Reuter of Indianapolis, Ind.
The family would like to extend their great appreciation to KDMC-ICU for their exceptional care and also to Dr. Stark, Dr. Kellerman and to the Community Hospice Care Center.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, June 26, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Charles Bush and Chaplain Jimm Smedley.
Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. June 25, 2009, at the funeral home with an Elks service at 7:30 p.m.
Rebecca Lanning Rice Fredeking - 1925-2009
Rebecca Lanning Rice Fredeking, age 84, of Ashland, Ky., died Thursday morning, June 25, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born May 6, 1925, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Morton Lanning and Edna Webber Lanning Gallup.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Rice; her brother, Morton Lanning Jr.; her first husband, Dick Rice, and her second husband, Carl Fredeking.
She was retired from the Kentucky Department of Corrections after having spent 27 years as an administrative assistant in the Probation and Parole office. In her retirement years, she greatly enjoyed shopping, traveling, reading and being with her family. She was a graduate of Thomas R. Brown High School and attended Marshall University. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 567, the Democratic Women’s Club, past president of Catlettsburg Junior Women’s Club and past president of Yost PTA. She was a long time member of Catlettsburg First United Methodist Church and more recently, a member of Ashland First United Methodist Church.
Survivors are a daughter, Jane Spurlock and her husband, John of Prestonsburg; sons, Mickey Rice and his wife, Pam of Ashland, Bill Rice and his wife, Tina of Ashland, and Fred Rice and his wife, Chris of Burlington, Ky.; grandchildren, Jason Rice of Dallas, Texas, Joe Rice of Brooklyn, N.Y., Rebecca Spurlock of Prestonsburg, Sarah Rice of Burlington and Kayla and Cody Rice of Ashland.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg by the Rev. Gene Pillow. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, June 26 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Becky’s memory be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, Ky.
Paul “Bullet” Burroughs - 1928-2009
Paul “Bullet” Burroughs, 81, of Raceland, Ky., passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Burroughs was born April 16, 1928, in Worthington, Ky., a son of the late Ada Skinner Burroughs. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kristina Kanatas; one sister, Kathryn Wilcox; and one brother, Dick Burroughs.
He was a retired clerk for the CSX Railroad with 41 years of service. He was a United States Navy veteran and a member of American Legion Post 43 in Raceland.
Surviving are his loving wife, Naomi Maynard Burroughs; one daughter and her husband, Vicki and George Kanatas of Houston, Texas; one sister, Mary Van Horn of Wichita Falls, Texas; two brothers, Jack Burroughs and Gary Burroughs, both of Worthington, Ky.; and one grandson, James Kanatas of San Antonio, Texas.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.
Helena Adkins - 1955-2009
Helena Adkins, 54, of Worthington, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Jan. 4, 1955.
Her husband, Norman Adkins II, survives.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland. Burial will be in Caroline Cemetery in Raceland.

Billie Thornton - 1945-2009
Billie R. Thornton, 63, of Raceland, died June 20 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
He was born July 5, 1945.
His wife, Cathy Green Thornton, survives.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 43 in Raceland.

Jean Perry, 69, of Worthington, died Tuesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Sharen Owens
Sharen Louise Cole Owens, 58, of Olive Hill, died Wednesday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
Her husband, Wilford Amos Owens, survives.

Jessie Peyton - 1935-2009
Jessie Madeline Brown Peyton, 73, of Morehead, died Wednesday at her residence.
She was born Oct. 31, 1935.
Her husband, Curtis Waldo Peyton, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Peyton Family Cemetery.
