James William “Duke” Boggs - 1935-2008
James William “Duke” Boggs, 72, of Wurtland, went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 21, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Mr. Boggs was born Oct. 19, 1935, in Load, a son of the late Clyde and Inez Wampler Boggs.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Anderson Boggs, and one sister, Wanda McGuire.
He was a retired truck driver and attended First Baptist Church in Greenup. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Rush.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Sue Heaberlin Boggs; two daughters, Gail Lynn (Denny) Reeves of Raceland and Jennifer Dawn (Bill) Hall of Mount Sterling; one brother, Joe Ray (Paulette) Boggs of Cleveland; two grandsons, William Donald Hall of Mount Sterling and Frederick James “F.J.” Reeves of Raceland; two stepsons, David Cordell of Versailles and Eric Taylor of Lexington; two step-grandchildren, McKenzie Cordell and McCabe Cordell of Versailles.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Dr. Thomas Melvin and Thomas Heaberlin, pastor. Burial will be in the McGuire Cemetery, Rt. 2, Greenup, with military graveside rites by James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276, South Shore.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and one hour before the funeral on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Esther B. Roach - 1926-2008
Esther B. Roach, 81, of Ironton, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 21, 2008, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
She was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Johnson County, the daughter of the late Burley and Dora Salyer McCarty.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Roach, who passed away on Dec. 2, 1976; two sons, Roger Roach and Dale Roach; son-in-law Dave Thomas; three brothers, James, Paul and William McCarty; two sisters, Jean Flack and Margaret McCarty.
She was a homemaker and has lived here all of her life. She attended Shaddick school and is a member of the Campbell Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. She loved to sew, travel and her church, and most of all, she loved her family and enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to Christian music.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Roy C. and Paula Roach of Turbeville, S.C.; a daughter, Vera Jane Thomas of Ashland; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Franklin “D.D.” and Connie McCarty of Aid, Ohio, Burley Ray and Rosemary McCarty of Ironton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Verna and Forrest Dyer of Springfield, Ohio, and Jessie Maude and Doug Sloan of Flatwoods; eight grandchildren, Carla Fannin, Nancy Clark, Tim Roach, J.J. Gibson, Sami Thomas, Robbie Roach, Jeff Roach and Heidi Ford; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton with the Rev. Bob Bradley and the Rev. Tim Roach officiating. Burial will be in Aid Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mabel Howard Penix
Mabel Howard Penix, 83, of Catlettsburg, died Sunday at Community Hospice Care Center.
Her husband, William “Bill” Penix, died in 2004.

Earnest E. “Gene” Adams - 1934- 2008
Gene Adams, 73, of Ashland, husband of Rachel Slone Adams, died Saturday at King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Preston Family Funeral Home.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday until service time.

Lora Gould - 1927-2008
Lora Gould, 80, of Naples, wife of Everett Gould, died Sunday afternoon at Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.

Kermit Sawyers Jr. - 1943-2008
Kermit Sawyers Jr., 62, of Catlettsburg, died Sunday at Community Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Sawyers is survived by his wife, Barbara Gillam Sawyers.

Jack Ray Hobson
Jack Ray Hobson, 59, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home.

C. Douglas Alfrey
C. Douglas Alfrey, 71, of Ezel, died Saturday at UK Medical Center in Lexington.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda Phillips Alfrey.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ezel United Presbyterian Church in Ezel. Burial will be in Alfrey’s Green Acres Cemetery in Ezel.

James Darvin McGuire - 1919-2008
James Darvin McGuire, 91, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday at his home.
He was born April 1, 1919, and was the widower of LIzzie May Collins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Prestonsburg. Burial will be in Bill Shepherd Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home.
