Dr. James F. Williamson - 1933-2008
Dr. James F. Williamson passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in Naples, Fla., after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Williamson died with his loving wife of 52 years, Lavonne, at his side.
He is also survived by three daughters, Nanci Williamson Simpson (Bobby) of Lexington, Ky., Karen Williamson Rogers (Richard) of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Beth Williamson Manning (Dennis) of Norfolk, Va.; and six grandchildren, Katherine Russell Simpson and Benjamin Haskell Simpson of Lexington, Morgan Elizabeth Rogers and Richard O. Rogers IV of Winston-Salem and William Alden Manning and Mary Heath Manning of Norfolk. Dr. Williamson also leaves to cherish his memory a sister, Mary Jo Holloway of Cullman, Ala. He was preceded by his brother, Robert L. Williamson.
Dr. Williamson, son of the late Russell and Nolda Williamson, was born in 1933 and raised in Inez, Ky. Upon graduation from Inez High School, Dr. Williamson attended Georgetown College. He graduated magna cum laude and subsequently enrolled at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, fulfilling his dream of becoming a doctor. Dr. Williamson began his medical practice in Ashland, Ky., as an obstetrician-gynecologist beginning what would be a long and fulfilling professional life. In addition to serving his patients, Dr. Williamson was appointed assistant clinical professor for his alma mater, the University of Louisville School of Medicine. After nearly 40 years of practicing medicine, he retired in 1998, dividing his time between Naples and Lexington, Ky. Retirement provided the time and opportunity for him to enjoy his beloved sport of golf.
During his years in Ashland, Dr. Williamson was active at First Baptist Church of Ashland. He served on the board of managers of King’s Daughters Medical Center, also fulfilling a term as president of staff. Like his father who enjoyed a second career in banking, Dr. Williamson served for more than 20 years on the boards of the Inez Deposit Bank and the First National Bank of Louisa.
Beyond the countless hours of caring for his patients, Dr. Williamson believed his family should be the primary focus of his life. He treasured his special, personal relationship with each of his six grandchildren, ensuring that each one feels justified claiming the title “Daddy Jim’s favorite.”
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21 at Second Presbyterian Church, 460 E. Main St., Lexington, Ky.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Avow Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
