Maudie C. Kitchen (1911-2009)

Maudie C. Kitchen, 98, of Ashland, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.

She was born April 18, 1911, in Elsie, Ky., a daughter of the late Sarah Elizabeth Keeton Cochran and James Harvey Cochran. She was also preceded in death by her husband, E. Leo Kitchen; a son, Clyde W. Kitchen; and seven brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Ruth Dupree, with whom she resided; a daughter-in-law, Laura E. Kitchen of Olive Hill, Ky.; two granddaughters, Deborah Sue Gibbs of Cold Spring, Ky., and Donna Lea Taylor of Columbus, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, C.C. Gibbs (Julia) of Ashland and Nathan Taylor and Ellen Paige Taylor of Columbus; and two great-great-grandchildren, Wesley Michael Gibbs and Maya Rose Gibbs of Ashland.

She was retired from the C.H. Parsons Co. and was of the Baptist faith.

A private graveside service with the immediate family was Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

Taylor Blevins Jr. (1920-2009)

Taylor Blevins Jr., 88, of Ashland, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 25, 1920, in Monaville, W.Va., the son of the late Taylor Sr. and Susan Murphy Blevins.

He was retired from the weld shop at AK Steel and a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church and Poage Masonic Lodge 325, F&AM. Taylor was a former county commissioner in the mid 1960s, building more roads than any other commissioner.

He was the oldest of his siblings whom everyone looked up to. After the death of his father, he became the patriarch of the family. He also gathered information for genealogy long before the age of computers and is responsible for giving his family the gift of family history.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Senters Blevins, in 2004; a son, Bobby G. Blevins; a sister, Judy Stanley; and a brother, Fred Blevins.

He is survived by five sisters, Betty Newsome and her husband, Charlie, of Springboro, Ohio, Pauline Hensley of Ashland, Ky., Margaret Jerrie Brown of Delaware, Ohio, Darlene Rigsby of Ashland and Clotene Shirkey of Delaware; two brothers, Douglas Blevins and his wife, Phyllis, and Clifford Blevins and his wife, Ollie, all of Ashland; a grandson, Bobby Blevins II of Ashland; a great-grandson, Tyler Blevins of Ashland; several nieces and nephews; and caregivers Mandy Mullins, Trish Belford and Diana Griffith.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday, June 19, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with Dr. Ronnie Mayes officiating. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Taylor’s name to Rose Hill Baptist Church, 1001 Winslow Road, Ashland, KY 41102 or Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.



Ronald Cornwell (1926-2009)

Ronald Cornwell, formerly of Ashland, Ky., died June 16, 2009, at his residence in Rockwood, Mich., in the care of Hospice.

He was born Sept. 20, 1926, a son of the late Emily Cornwell of Ashland and the late Fred Cornwell of Bidwell, Ohio.

In addition, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Kenneth Cornwell Jr., and a brother, Winfred Cornwell.

He was retired from the Chrysler Corp. and a World War II veteran.

He leaves behind a wife, Doris Cornwell of Rockwood; three sons, Kenneth (Gladys) Cornwell of Ashland, Ronnie (Sharon) Cornwell of Chicago and Fred Cornwell of Florida; a granddaughter, Jennifer Patterson of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Ernest (Pat) Cornwell of Florida; a sister, Jeanetta (Tommy) Lindsey of Tennessee; and a sister-in-law, Linda Cornwell of Ashland.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home in Flat Rock, Mich. Entombment will be in Michigan Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Medley Thompson (1918-2009)

Medley Thompson, 90, of Rush, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Boyd County, the son of the late Andrew Johnson and Edith Marie Scott Thompson. His wife, Norma L. Hillman Thompson, died in 2007. He was also preceded in death by brothers Karl Thompson and Andrew Thompson Jr. and sisters Thelma Wells, Jean Savage and Iona Boggs.

He was a World War II and Korean War veteran and retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer. He retired from Novamont Plastics Plant, and was a retired Southern Baptist preacher, pastoring at Everman Creek Baptist Church in Carter County, Union Baptist Church in Lewis County, Sunrise Baptist Church in Borger, Texas, and Pollard Baptist Church in Ashland.

He was an active member of the Democratic Party and worked the election polls for many years. He was a delegate for District 43Y Lions Club and held every office in the Boyd County Rural Lions Club, which grew sugar cane for molasses and made apple butter. He was a Boy Scout leader, a Kentucky colonel and a retired farmer.

Surviving are sons Scotty (Mary Lou) Thompson of Rush, Ky., and Andy Thompson (Lacey) of Flatwoods, Ky.; and a daughter, Karla (Jim) Thomas of Barnesville, Ohio. Grandchildren are Patricia Salmon (Phillip) of Ray City, Ga., Stephen Cossett (Tonya) of Atlanta, Ga., Jim Thomas of Barnesville, Paula Thompson of Rush, Heather Thomas of Barnesville, Medley Thompson of Rush, Jeremy Thompson (Bobbi) of Rush, Maria Hughes (Jeff) of Morehead, Ky., Kara Feller (Chris) of Rush and Karl Thompson of Rush; and great-grandchildren David Thompson of Ray City, Ga., Austin Forbess of Rush, Chelsey Thompson of Ray City, Taylor Forbess of Rush, Gabe Hughes of Morehead, Ky., Belle Gee of Rush, Andrea Feller of Rush and Emma Thompson of Rush.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Garner Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Gary Arrington. Burial will be in Thompson-Wells Cemetery, where military services will be by American Legon Kenova Post 93.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel and after noon Saturday at the church.

Dan Day Jr. (1928-2009)

Dan Day Jr., 80, of Ashland, Ky., husband of Helen McKnight Day, died Wednesday morning in Jo-Lin Health Care Center in Ironton, Ohio, following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Dan and Pearl Gillum Day Sr.

He was a retired Teamster for Local 505 and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Dan was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by two daughters, Ellen Johnson and Lorii Day.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Diana Gillum of Ashland; a brother, Ernest Day of Rush, Ky.; a special nephew, Ryan Day; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel by Brother Michael Rice. Entombment will be in the mausoleum.

Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland.

Herbert D. “Herbie” Burchett (1929-2009)

Herbert D. “Herbie” Burchett, 80, a longtime resident of Worthington, died Tuesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky., following an extended illness.

Herbie was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He passed peacefully with his family at his side.

Herbie was born Jan. 17, 1929, in Greenup, the son of the late George W. and Susie Cox Burchett.

He was a retired conductor with CSX Railroad, a member of United Transportation and the First Baptist Church of Raceland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Herbie is survived by his wife, Barbara Merritt Burchett; a son, Philip Burchett of Wilbraham, Mass.; a daughter, Laura Johnson of Maineville, Ohio; two grandchildren, Alex and Angelee Johnson; and sisters Clara Parker of Ashland and Norma Carter of Russell.

Herbie was preceded in death by sisters Alice Darnell, Edith Underwood, Nina Van Hoose and Margie Ward and brothers Homer Burchett, Robert Burchett and Raymond Burchett.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 19 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by the Rev. Bill Parker and the Rev. Tom Stevens. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.

Visitors may call after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.



Homer N. Burchett (1923-2009)

Homer N. Burchett of Louisa, Ky., passed away June 16, 2009.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Susan F. Morgan Burchett.

He was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Claiborne County, Tenn.

He will be remembered as an outstanding Christian, husband, father, friend and Bible scholar. He was a retired Baptist pastor who served churches in Kentucky and Florida. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Gay Burchett.

He is also survived by daughters Joy (Dave) Marcum of Lexington, Ky., Hope (Larry) Stone of Florence, Ky., Faith (Ric) Frazier of Louisa and Dawn (Jeff) Keith of London, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of appreciative friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, June 18, 2009, at Young Funeral Home in Louisa. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Louisa. Interment will be in Johnson Family Cemetery in Whitley County, Ky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the building fund at First Baptist Church, 301 W. Pike St., Louisa, KY 41230.



Stephen Scott Maple (1964-2009)

Stephen Scott Maple, 44, born June 29, 1964, in Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away on June 17, 2009.

He was the son of William and Sue Maple Jr. and Jenny (Workman) and John Klein of Oak Hill, Ohio.

He was the grandson of Cowan and the late Pauline Workman of Heartland of Jackson, Irene and the late William Maple Sr. of Portsmouth and Mable Klein of Huntington, W.Va.

He is survived by his sons, Stephen Brock Maple of Oak Hill, Stephen Cole Maple of Greenup, Ky., and Braxton Maple of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; daughters Elizabeth and Harley Maple of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; a brother, Darren (Julie) Maple of Oak Hill; a sister, Josie (Tim) Howard of Oak Hill; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Kuhner-Lewis Funeral Home in Oak Hill by the Rev. Stan Howard. Burial will be in Horeb Cemetery.
