Fannie Maye Hicks - 1919-2008
Fannie Maye Hicks, 89, of Ashland, went home to be with her God Monday, June 16, 2008 from the Community Hospice Care Center.
She was born Feb. 14, 1919, in Boyd County, Ky., the daughter of the late Lee Anders and Lou Whitley Gullett.
She was a member of the Kenova Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Owen Dee Hicks in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Greene of Ashland; two sons, David Hicks and his wife Veronica and Brian Hicks and his wife Linda of Ashland; eight grandchildren, Mark Hensley, Scott Hensley, Angela Hall, Lisa Hicks, Jessica Evans, Jason Hicks, Jerad Hicks and Jamie Greene; and six great-grandchildren, Timothy W. Crace, Danielle Rakes, Shian Hall, Cole Hall, Blake Hall and Olivia Hensley.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Rose Hill Mausoleum by Pastor Amos Prince. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
Arnold Shannon - 1913-2008
Arnold "Smokie" Shannon, 95, of Catlettsburg, passed away early Monday morning in the Boyd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Shannon was born April 8, 1913, in Lawrence County, Ky., a son of the late Quinn and Belle Marrow Shannon. He was a self-employed farmer/laborer, and a member of the Durbin Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving are a son, Morris A. Shannon and his wife Darlene of Louisa, Ky; two daughters, Betty Shannon of Louisa and Brenda Shannon of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Laurene Cyrus, Gladys Stevens and May Black, all of Catlettsburg; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family, all with treasured memories and heavy hearts.
Preceding him in death are two brothers, Paul Shannon and Jim Shannon; and two sisters, Alice Hulett and Faye Gabbard.
A funeral service in honor of Arnold Shannon will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at the Durbin Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Everett Stevens will offer words of comfort. Final rest will follow at Stevens Cemetery in Durbin.
Visitation for family and friends will be from moon until service time Wednesday at the church.
Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Emma Mearl Sparks Logan - 1923-2008
Mrs. Emma Mearl Sparks Logan, age 84, of Olive Hill, Ky., was called home to be with the Lord, Sunday evening, June 15, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Logan was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Carter, Ky., and is a daughter of the late Everett and Hattie Haywood Sparks.
Mearl was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a Christian and a member of the Olive Hill United Methodist Church and the Olive Hill Chapter of the Eastern Star. For more than 45 years, she worked at the garment factory as a seamstress and 46 years as an election official. Mearl loved to sew and made several hand made quilts, wedding gowns, prom dresses and many other beautiful items.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Clyde Logan on June 11, 2007; one son, Samuel Justin Logan; four brothers, Sherman Sparks, Bill Sparks, Samuel Sparks and Jesse Sparks; and three sisters, Beaulah Lawson, Grace Campbell and Pearl Hurley.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Clyde "Chip" and Jane Leslie Logan of Lexington, Ky.; one daughter and son-in-law, Candy and Larry Hall of Olive Hill; and two grandsons, Perry Gene Logan and Gene Austin Logan. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother Jason Carpintero officiating. Burial will follow in the Logan Cemetery on Rose Ridge Road in Olive Hill.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. tonight and until the service hour Wednesday at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Delmaine Adkins - 1938-2008
Delmaine Adkins, 70, of Sandy Hook, Ky., passed away Monday, June 16, 2008 in the Elliott Nursing & Rehab Center in Sandy Hook.
Mr. Adkins was born Jan. 10, 1938, in Elliott County, the son of the late Virgil L. & Belle Elliott Adkins. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Dollie A. Moore.
He was a farmer and attended Middle Fork Church of God.
He is survived by a niece, Regina & Darris Hammons of West Liberty, Ky.; an aunt, Eva & Brit Gibson of Sandy Hook; a great-nephew, Jonathan & Karen Hammons of Owingsville, Ky. and their children, Madison, John Robert, and Makenna.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in the Elliott County Memory Gardens.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Opal Faye Carper Jordan - 1928-2008
Opal Faye Carper Jordan, 79, of Leatherwood in Garrison, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at her residence.
She was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Ward and Letha Mennach Carper.
She was a custodian at Kentucky Christian University and was a member of the Lower Grassy Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Jordan in 2004; two brothers, Vernon Carper and Ora Lee Carper and one sister, Beulah Lowe.
Her survivors include three daughters, Loretta (Ron) Adams of Grayson, Ky., and Donna (Carl) Billups and Rosemary (Mike) Smith, all of Greenup, Ky.; three sisters, Audrey Stalker of Frankton, Ind., Betty Preston of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Darlene Smith of Greenup; four brothers, Edgar Carper of Olive Hill, Ky., Bobby Carper of Grayson and Curtis Carper and Jimmy Carper, both of Carter City, Ky.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Hillary Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Horsely Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, June 17 and after 9 a.m. Wednesday until service time at the funeral home.

Olive Marie Holbrook Whitt, 80, of South Shore, died Monday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Tobba Crank - 1944-2008
Tobba Childers Crank, 63, of Morehead, died Sunday in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.
She was born Dec. 25, 1944.
Her husband, Larry Ray Crank, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Clearfield Cemetery.

Roger Ison, 71, of West Liberty, died Sunday in Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital in West Liberty.
His wife, Arlene Kelly Ison, survives.

Fontaine Lewis, 82, of Thelma, died Sunday in Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
He was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Floyd County.
His wife, Ocilene Walters Lewis, survives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Donald Addison Kirby, 71, of Flemingsburg, died Monday in Pioneer Trace Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Flemingsburg.
He was born Nov. 28, 1936, in Fremont, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Spy Run Cemetery in Garrison.

He was born July 20, 1932.
His wife, Barbara Ann Kouns Waginger, survives.

Marcus H. Zimmerman, 86, of West Portsmouth, died Saturday in University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
He was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Scioto County.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Carver Zimmerman.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore, Ky. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.
