William M. Turman - 1932-2008
William M. Turman, 75, of Ashland, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Community Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Turman was born July 28, 1932, in Ashland, a son of the late Joseph Raymond and Lutie McDowell Turman. He was the husband of Nancy See Turman.
He was retired from AK Steel and was a lifelong member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he served on the board and was an elder. He also was a member of Fred Gross Masonic Lodge 953, Scottish Rite and El Hasa Shrine. He also was a Korean War Army veteran.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeff Turman of Fort Mitchell and Tim Turman and his wife, Laura, of Taylors, S.C.; two daughters, Debbie Martin and her husband, Steve, of Ashland, and Beth Palmeter and her husband, Jeff, of Kingsport, Tenn.; a sister, Myra Pendleton and her husband, Donald, of Lynchburg, Ohio; grandchildren Jason Martin and his wife, Leigh Ann, and Justin, Martin, Jennifer and Caitlin Turman and Sarah and Emily Turman and Whitney, Abby and Andrew Palmeter; and a great-grandchild, Savannah Martin.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Ike Nicholson officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel with Masonic service by Fred Gross Lodge 953 at 7 p.m.
The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Ed Roberts - 1915-2008
Lester Edward “Ed” Roberts, 93, of Ashland, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Community Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Roberts was born April 1, 1915, in Clarksburg, W.Va., a son of the late Nathan and Rosetta King Roberts. His wife, Mabel Coger Roberts, died in 1997.
He was retired after 46 years as vice president/general manager of KY-WV Gas Co. He also as a World War II Navy veteran and a member of First United Methodist Church and Poage Masonic Lodge 325.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Mike) VanHoose of Ashland and Becky (John) Cabe of Lexington; three grandsons, Michael (Paula) VanHoose, Bryan (Gretchen) VanHoose and Randy (Heather) VanHoose; and two great-granddaughters, Emily and Breanna VanHoose.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel with the Rev. Richard Suman officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the funeral home.

Michael Johnson - 1968-2008
Michael Eugene Johnson of Ashland passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Fort Pierce, Fla., as a result of an automobile accident.
Mr. Johnson, 39, was born July 23, 1968, at Ashland, a son of Linda Lou Blair Thompson, her companion, Kirby Ramey, and Gerald Ray Johnson and his wife, Diane, all of Ashland. He was a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, the plant supervisor at American Asphalt & Aggregate, Inc., Kenova, W.Va., and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
As well as his parents, sadly left behind are two sons, Blake Johnson and Austin Johnson, both of Ashland; two daughters, Danielle Johnson, of Minford, Ohio, and Brooklynn Johnson of Ashland; a brother, George R. Johnson, his wife, Lorna, of Ironton; two sisters, Mary E. Johnson, her companion, Randy Springer, of Ashland and Elizabeth A. Johnson of Jackson, Ohio; two step-brothers, Kevin Davis of Ironton and Ernie Davis, his wife, Angie, of Flatwoods; and his fiancee and companion, Genny Johnson.
Preceding him in death is a brother, Lesley L. Johnson.
A funeral service in remembrance of Michael Johnson will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2008, at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Pastor Sean Mayenschein. Final rest will follow at Catlettsburg Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
Geneva Alt - 1934-2008
Geneva “Needie” (Stevens) Alt of Melbourne, Fla., joined the Lord on June 4, 2008.
She was born Nov. 23, 1934, in Ashland, to Marie (Gallaher) Stevens Smith.
She graduated from Ashland High School and continued her education in Cincinnati, where she met and married Donald A. Alt in September 1954.
She is survived by her loving children, Anna “Re” (Pat) Giunta of Nevada, Mo., Teresa Morrow of Melbourne, Fla., Anthony “Tony” (Jill) Alt of Tampa, Fla., Michael (Bernadette) Alt, and 11 grandchildren.
Geneva also leaves behind sisters Eleanor Ward, Lou Thomas, Movita Wheatley and brother Larry Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, mother Marie, and grandson Christopher Morrow.
Sharon Stephens - 1955-2008
Sharon Hurley Stephens, 52, of Load, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 5, 2008, at James Cancer Center in Columbus.
Mrs. Stephens was born Sept. 25, 1955, in Hazard, a daughter of the late Willie and Janice Stamper Hurley.
Her husband, Robert Joseph “Bob” Stephens, survives.
She was a retired teacher for the Greenup County school system and a member of Bible Baptist Church in Catlettsburg, Greenup County Retired Teachers Association and she was a loving wife and mother.
Also surviving are a son, Robert Joseph Stephens II of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Heather Ashley of Wheelersburg; a granddaughter, Morgan Ashley of Wheelersburg; a brother, Glenn Hurley of Vicco; and two sisters, Sherry Gayheart of Vicco and Gail Hurley of Bonnieville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, at Load Christian Baptist Church with Dennis Miles officiating. Burial will follow in Quillen Cemetery in Lynn.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup and an hour before the service Monday at the Church.

Jerry R. Rice - 1945-2008
Jerry R. Rice, 62, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 5, 2008, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mr. Rice was born June 26, 1945, in Greenup, a son of the late Millard and Elsie Vanover Rice.
He was a retired welder from AK Steel, a member of the Steelworkers Union Local 1865 in Ashland and attended Greenup Christian Church.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Michael A. Rice, and a sister, Linda Fletcher.
He is survived by a special friend of 38 years, Rosie White of LaGrange; two sons, Kenneth W. (Beth) Rice of Louisville and Jerry L. (Becki) Morrison of Versailles; a brother, Jack (Carolyn) Rice of Greenup; a sister, Joy (Hobert) Marshall of Greenup; and four grandchildren, Carrie Rice, Kelly Rice, Shelbi Morrison and Cody Morrison.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Robert Hine, minister, and the Rev. Jack Edwards. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Greenup.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and an hour before the funeral Tuesday at the funeral home.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
Edward L. Thomas - 1927-2008
Edward L. Thomas, 81, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
He was born April 12, 1927, in Raceland, a son of the late Lowe and Laura Bays Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Darlene Skaggs Thomas.
He retired as a storeroom clerk after 39 years with the C&O Railroad and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of Flatwoods First Church of the Nazarene.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Thomas; a sister, Mabel Tackett; and a son-in-law, Larry F. Moore.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Randall (Liz) Thomas of Wurtland and Kevin (Tina) Thomas of West Union, Ohio; two daughters, Diane (Thomas) Moore and Tammy (Paul) Greene, both of Greenup; three brothers, Earl (Mildred) Thomas of South Point, Ohio, Cecil (Betty) Thomas of Worthington and Creed (Bonnie) Thomas of Wurtland; two sisters, Hazel Middleton of Worthington and Frances Bates of Flatwoods; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flatwoods First Church of the Nazarene by the Rev. Warren F. Toller Sr. and Pastor Roger Bonzo. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Military graveside rites will be by James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup and an hour before services Saturday at the church.
Bessie Lee Moore - 1933-2008
Bessie Lee Moore, 74, of Louisa, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center in Louisa.
Mrs. Moore was born Nov. 9, 1933, in Overtta, a daughter of the late Lee and Mae Kelly Workman. She was the widow of Herman Moore, who died in 1997.
Mrs. Moore was a secretary for Louisa United Methodist Church, where she also was a member.
She is survived by a son, Ross Alan Moore of Louisa; four sisters, Phyllis Hughes of Marlow, Ohio, Lucille Young of Louisa, Joann Hall of Louisa and Gale Dixon of Loveland, Ohio; one brother, Garland Workman of Duluth, Minn.; a granddaughter, Alexis Paige Moore.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Louisa United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Held and Dr. Charles Bertram officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Young Funeral Home in Louisa.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Louisa United Methodist Church building fund.
Rae Ann VanHorn - 1937-2008
Rae Ann VanHorn, 71, of Ashland, died Friday.
She was born Feb. 26, 1937, in Ashland.
Private gravesides services will be Monday at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the director of Miller Funeral Home.

William Sutherland - 1947-2008
William V. Sutherland, of Tucson, Ariz., passed away May 31, 2008 in Tucson.
He was born Feb. 28, 1947 in Logan, W.Va., a son of Joan O. Cole of Tucson, and the late William Sutherland.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Catlettsburg. Visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Committal at Catlettsburg Cemetery.
