Jack A. Ellens - 1929-2008
Jack A. Ellens, 78, of Pedro, Ohio, formerly of Ashland, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
He was born July 12, 1929, in Ashland, the son of the late Mike and Mary May Ellens. He was the husband of the late Roberta Ellens.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Ellens and Harry Ellens.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Gloria Darty of Austin Town, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and David Gonyer Sr. of Hot Springs, Ark.; five grandchildren, Sheryl Blackstone of Hot Springs, Melinda Spears of Little Rock, Ark., Emily Darty of Washington Court House, Ohio, Andrew Darty of Dayton, Ohio, and William Darty Zayas of San Juan, Puerto Rico; three stepchildren, Betty Wicker and Cathy Zall, both of Pedro, and Sue Gilbert of Titusville, Fla.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ida Ann Bayes and Josephine Ellens, both of Ashland.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. today at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Michael Rice.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Oscar Davis Jr. - 1934-2008
Oscar Davis Jr., 73, of Ashland, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born June 28, 1934, in Prichard, W.Va., the son of the late Oscar Davis Sr. and Flora Staley Davis. His wife, Naomi Ruth Crockett Davis, survives.
He was a member of Flatwoods Church of Christ.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Douglas Arnold Davis, Duane Allen Davis and Darren Oscar Davis, all of Ashland; two daughters, Patricia Ann Hensley of Mount Sterling and Alicia Rene Barker of Ashland; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Nealy of Ohio.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Ashland Cemetery by Minister John Brown.
There will be no visitation.
Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
Everett M. Salley - 1943-2008
Everett M. Salley, 64, of Ashland, formerly of Argillite, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Salley was born Nov. 14, 1943, in Greenup County, a son of the late William Henry and Dorothy Juanita Steele Salley.
He was a retired clerk at the Raceland Car Shops of CSX Railroad. He was an expert tree trimmer-groomer and formerly worked for Bartlett Tree Service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Clarence Fields American Legion Post 76 of Ashland.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gaylord Salley.
He is survived by a special friend of several years, Ms. Shawn Sexton of Ashland.
He is also survived by a son, Everett Matthew Salley of Grayson; two daughters, Valerie Joy Harshaw of Louisville and Katrina Salley of Lexington; two brothers, Alford (Dona) Salley and Bill (Erma) Salley, both of Argillite; two sisters, Emily (Reed) Scott and Linda Salley, both of Argillite; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cane Creek Cemetery by Gary McClain. Military graveside rites will be by James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup.
Edward L. Thomas - 1927-2008
Edward L. Thomas, 81, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
He was born April 12, 1927, in Raceland, a son of the late Lowe and Laura Bays Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Darlene Skaggs Thomas.
He retired as a storeroom clerk after 38 years with the C&O Railroad and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of Flatwoods First Church of the Nazarene.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Thomas; a sister, Mabel Tackett; and a son-in-law, Larry F. Moore.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Randall (Liz) Thomas of Wurtland and Kevin (Tina) Thomas of West Union, Ohio; two daughters, Diane (Thomas) Moore and Tammy (Paul) Greene, both of Greenup; three brothers, Earl (Mildred) Thomas of South Point, Ohio, Cecil (Betty) Thomas of Worthington and Creed (Bonnie) Thomas of Wurtland; two sisters, Hazel Middleton of Worthington and Frances Bates of Flatwoods; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flatwoods First Church of the Nazarene by the Rev. Warren F. Toller Sr. and Pastor Roger Bonzo. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Military graveside rites will be by James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup and an hour before services Saturday at the church.
John L. Ison - 1934-2008
John L. Ison, 73, of Sandy Hook, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008, in the Life Care Center in Morehead.
He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in Elliott County, the son of the late William J. and Gladys S. Ison.
He was a pipefitter and belonged to Pipefitters Local 155. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Fannin Enterprise Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Donald R. Ison and Phillip W. Ison, both of Sandy Hook; and two sisters, Margie J. Alletzhauser of Marcillus, N.Y., and Patricia Redwine of Versailles.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 11428.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
John Gehringer - 1927-2008
John C. Gehringer, 80, of Ashland, died Thursday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 19, 1927, in Ashland.
His wife, Betty Hutchinson Gehringer, survives.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
William Turman
William M. Turman, 75, of Ashland, died Thursday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
His wife, Nancy See Turman, survives.
The funeral will be be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel and after 1 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Lester Roberts
Lester Edward “Ed” Roberts, 93, of Ashland, died Thursday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
His wife, Mabel C. Roberts, preceded him in death.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel.

Jerry ray Rice, 62, of Greenup, died Thursday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

May Fairchild LeMaster, 90, of West Liberty, formerly of Thealka, died Tuesday in Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville.
She was born Jan. 1, 1918, in Johnson County.
Her husband, Roy H. LeMaster, preceded her in death.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in LeMaster Family Cemetery.
Linda Johnson - 1945-2008
Linda L. Johnson, 62, of Vanceburg, died Thursday in the Golden Living Center in Vanceburg.
She was born June 18, 1945, in New Boston, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Lewis County Memory Gardens at Black Oak.
Henry Bailey - 1918-2008
Henry Shannon Bailey, 90, of Pikeville, died Wednesday.
He was born May 24, 1918, in Greenup County.
His wife, Ida Mae Hall Bailey, survives.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Buckingham Cemetery at Bevinsville.

Ruby Derosett Justice, 81, of Pikeville, died Wednesday.

Clarice Birkel - 1927-2008
Clarice Mae Bryant Birkel, 81, of Deering, died Wednesday at her home.
She was born May 22, 1927, in Lawrence County.
Her husband, Paul A. “Hoot” Birkel, survives.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Community Cemetery at Deering.

Martha Schaefer - 1938-2008
Martha Jane Schaefer, 70, of Ironton, died Wednesday at her residence.
She was born May 25, 1938, in Ironton.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary Cemetery in Coal Grove.
There will be no visitation.

William Asbury - 1936-2008
William “Billy” Asbury, 72, of Scottown, died Wednesday in Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis.
He was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Lawrence County.
