John Cumpston - 1918-2009

John Russell Cumpston, 90, a lifelong resident of Catlettsburg, passed away Friday morning, June 5, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mr. Cumpston was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Charles and Octavia Dial Cumpston. His wife of 58 years, Nettie K. Stewart Cumpston, preceded him in 1998. He graduated from Boyd County High School, retired from Armco Steel in 1983 following 41 years at the open hearth furnace and was a member of Steelworkers Local 1865. John enjoyed farming and caring for the wild animals on his farm.

Sadly left behind is an adoring family including two sons, Charlie Cumpston of Boyd County, Ky., and George (Brenda) Cumpston of Phoenix, Ariz.; five daughters, Alma (Mike) O’Neal of Catlettsburg, Ky., Pat (Mark) Mauger of Prince George, Va., Drexel Marie (Harry) Smith of Rush, Ky., Madeline Sue (Herman) Woods of Raceland, Ky., and Kathy Lynn (Tony) Sparks of Catlettsburg; two sisters, Genny Stewart of Flatwoods and Opal Penix of Ashland, Ky; 23 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are a son, Wade L. Cumpston; four brothers and one sister.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. A message of comfort and reassurance will be offered by Pastor Mike Amos, with a message in music given by Pastor Jeff Ferguson. Final rest will follow a committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland. Grandsons will serve as casket bearers.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



William Hayes

William Hayes, 87, of Ashland, died Friday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Linzy Stone

Linzy Stone, 75, of Olive Hill, died Friday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

His wife, Sally Davis Stone, survives.

Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Anna Hayes - 1925-2009

Anna Ruth Layne Hayes, 83, of Betsy Layne, wife of Clarence Edward Hayes, died Thursday at her residence.

She was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Betsy Layne.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Betsy Layne Church of Christ. Burial will be in Layne Family Cemetery in Betsy Layne.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. today at the church.

Hall Funeral Home in Martin is in charge of arrangements.



Robert Bowens - 1931-2009

Robert Lowell Bowens, 78, of Lowmansville, died Thursday in Lexington.

He was born Feb. 6, 1931, in Johnson County.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Young Cemetery in Thealka.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



Effie Howard - 1927-2009

Effie Howard, 81, of David, died Thursday in Prestonsburg Healthcare Center.

She was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Hippo.

Her husband, Tilden Howard, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Hughes Cemetery in Hippo.



Novella Compton

Novella Akers Compton, 89, of Betsy Layne, died Thursday in Gallatin County Nursing Home in Warsaw.

Her husband, Tony J. Compton, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.



Jewell Ginn - 1931-2009

Jewell Ginn, 78, of Vanceburg, died Thursday in Meadowview Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 14, 1931, in Mount Zion.

Her husband, Talbert A. Ginn, died in 2004.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Lewis County Memory Gardens in Black Oak.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight and at 8 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.



Hildreth “Bea” Fraley - 1916-2009

Hildreth Beatrice “Bea” Fraley, 92, of Ironton, died Thursday in Jo-Lin Nursing Home.

She was born Oct. 22, 1916, in Soldier.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Tracy Brammer Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lorraine Monk - 1925-2009

Lorraine Monk, 84, of Portsmouth, died Thursday in Hempstead Manor in Portsmouth.

She was born Jan. 30, 1925, in South Portsmouth.

Her husband, Donald Monk, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Monday at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore.



Tammie Potts - 1961-2009

Tammie Ann Potts, 48, of South Point, died Monday at her residence.

She was born March 12, 1961, in Ironton.
